INDIANA FIRE LOSS $32,962,624 IN FIVE YEARS Figures Indictment of Public Ignorance and Carelessness. CAUSES ARE ANALYZED During the fire years ending with 1920 fire losses In Indiana caused the destruction of property valued et the astonlsh- • total of $32,962,624, according to figs made public today by the national board of fire underwriters, which compiled the statistics from Its actuarial bureau's records. These figures reveal, in a startling way, the price being paid by the State for public Ignorance and carelessness In handling fire hazards. The causes are classified under three headings, of which twelve are designated as “strictly preventable,” with a total of $10,968,108"or 83.2 per cent of the whole; nine are designated as "partly preventable,” the aggregate being $18,349,559 or 40.5 per cent of the complete loss, and in addition there are those listed in the “unknown” column, which total $8,644,627 or 26.3 per cent. The “unknown" losses may be considered as largely preventable since, if determined, they would have been distributed among the other causes. EXPOSURES, ELECTRICITY CHIEF FIRE CAUSES. In analyzing the figures, It Is found that w'hile “exposure,” which means the effect of communicated fires, was responsible for the heaviest loss. $3,615,839, the principal specific cause of fire was “electricity,” with a toll of $3,128,653. This indicates how the safest form of power and light Is abused in Indiana as a result of carelessness. Next in Importance as causes of fire were "sparks on roofs,” s£, 989.917, then “Matches — Smoking,” $2,086,542, and ‘then “defective chimneys and flues, $2,026,748. The losses during the five years were *s follows: Strictly preventable causes: •fective Chimneys and F1ue5.,52,026.74S keworks, Firecrackers, etc.... 37,113 s, Natural and Artificial .... 357,054 Hot Ashes and Coals. Open Fires 405,129 Ignition of Hot Grease, Oil Tar, Asphalt, etc 176,920 Matches—Smoking 2,086.542 Open Lights 502.410 Petroleum and Its Products.... 972.197 Rubbish and Litter 80,325 Sparks on Roofs 2,989.917 Steam and Hot Water Pipes.. 73,204 Stoves, Furnaces, Boilers and their Pipes 1,260,489 Total $10.908,10S Partly preventable causes: Electricity $3,128,653 Explosions 151,654 Exposure (including conflagrations) 3.615,839 Sparks from Machinery 1,070,216 Incendiarism 393,854 Lightning 1,021,734 Miscellaneous Known Causes... 421.839 Sparks from Combustiou 017,508 Spontaneous Combustion 1.828,592 Total $13,349,559 Unknown Causes (probably largely preventable) $ 8,844,627 Total $32,962,024 INDIANA THIRTEENTH IN LOSSES LIST. Indiana stands thirteenth among all the States in the amount of loss by fire and the figures quoted should be increased by about 25 per cent to cover

Liquor Scandal in Landis Court CHICAGO, Feb. 10.—A searching Investigation so alleged “fixing” of liquor law violation cases in the Federal building is under way at the instigation of Judge K. M. Landis. The probe was undertaken when admissions that $1,200 had been paid by a liquor law violator to a local politician and that subsequently charges against the alleged "bootlegger” had been dropped. Both the politician and the man accused of dealing in illicit booze admitted their part in the deal. Following these admissions, Col. John V. Cltnnin, assistant United States district attorney, ■was summoned before Judge Landis and openly rebuked. v J losses not reported to the National Board of Fire Underwriters. The State’s losses during the five years from 1916 to 1920 inclusive averaged $6.592,524 per annum. If the total of $32,962.624 could have been used instead of wasted, it would have built 8,592 houses at $5,000 apiece (sufficient to furnish homes for 32,960 people, or more than the population of Kokomo), or It would have built 3.293 miles of good macadam roads at SIO,OOO a mile. ‘White Mule’ Dispute Causes Two Arrests Albin and Lottie Skubleh, 949 West Pearl street, and Peter Lucas, 988 West Pearl street, were arrested last night by the police on blind tiger charges, following an epidemic of tale-telling in the neighborhood, which is said to have been the result of a falling out among former friends. Hallie Edwards, 801 West Washington street, told the police that she and a number of soldiers had purchased “white mule” from the Skubleh family, and when they were arrested they promptly announced to the officers that they had purchased the liquor from Lucas. Now the police are wondering from whom Lucas got his supply. MOTOR COP INJURED. Motorpoliceraan Charles Halstead was injured yesterday afternoon when he fell from his motorcycle in Vermont street near Capitol avenue. His face was cut by his goggles and both hands were injured. He was taken to the city hospital, but later returned to police headquarters

POLICE CALLED TO HELP QUIET FEDERAL ROW Riot Breaks at Jail When Deputy Attempts to Put Mpn in Cells. Police reserves were called to the Marion County jail last night, to assist Sheriff George Snider and his deputies In quelling a riot among Federal prisoners confined In the jail. The trouble arose when Henry Dllger, deputy sheriff, went to Federal row, on the second floor of the jail, to order the prisoners Into their cells for the night. The prisoners were in what is termed the bull pen, a space between the two rows of cells, In which they are allowed to mingle during the day. Dllger's orders were disobeyed and the forty-nine prisoners in the Federal section refused to return to their cells and begun abusing the deputy. SHERIFF CALLS FOR ASSISTANCE. Charles Sherman, another deputy, was then called and when the two found they could do nothing with the prisoners Sheriff Snider was summoned. He sought to induce the men to return to their cells peaeably but they treated the orders of the sheriff in the same manner they did those of the deputies and Sheriff Snider called for assistance from the police station. Motorpolicemen Wilkinson and Mangus, followed by a number of patrolmen, went to the aid of the county officials, | and when the police Joined the group | the prisoners sullenly returned to their j cells, with the exception of George B. ! Lucas, alleged bigamist, and a few oth- | ers. When the officers started into the I bull pen all but Lucas returned to their ! cells and it was necessary to use force i on him. | Lucas was placed in solitary confinement for having Incited the trouble, according to Sheriff Snider. PRISONERS CLAIM SECTION CROWDED. | The trouble among the Federal prlsonj ers Is said to have arisen over what the ! prisoners call too badly crowding that section. The section will comfortably take 1 care of forty-eight men, officials say, and at the present time there is only i one more in that section than it is ordl- ; narily Intended to house. This condi- | tion, officials say, causes no crowding | and many more than that have been conI fined in the section at ong time, it is * said.
