GERRY IS OBJECTOR Special to Indiana Dally Times anil Philadelphia Public Ledger. BY ROBERT BARRY. WASHINGTON, Feb. 9.—The “farm bloc” has gained another 100 per cent victory. The Senate accepted, with smiles much patting of its own political back, a cooperative marketing bill of radical caste. In so doing, it swallowed whole a bill passed by the House almost a year ago and scrapped a more conservative substitute written by its own Judiciary Committee last July The bill, in the precise form demanded by the agrarian party in Congress, was approved by the impressive vote of 58 to 1. The lone objector was Senator Pete> Goelet Gerry of Rhode Island, whose constituency is a consuming one. The measure will legalize associations of producers of agricultural products for trading in interstate commerce. Its proponents promised through it the farmer would gain higher prices without increased costs to the dwellers in cities. They propose to eliminate once again the oft-eliminated middleman. To get the House bill before the Senate for approval it was necessary for the Administration members of the Judiciary Committee to eat crow for love of the farmer: to say. in effect, they had not meant it when they proposed a few short months ago to throw around the farmer combinations certain restrictions intended to curb monopolistic tendencies and excessive profit-taking. They rejected the judiciary committee bill by a vote of 56 to 4. Three Democrats and one Republican stood by the Senate bill. The Republican was Borah of Idaho, Senator Brandegee of Connecticut, announced, however, b? was against the scrapping of the Senate bill, but he was “paired” and, refrained from voting. MADE IN TEXT. There were several minor amendments to the House text, but as approved by the Senate, the measure carried all the effective provisions to exclude from the scope of anti-trust prosecution the cooperative organization developed by farmers. The roll call revealed such consistent champions of the farmer as Senator Lodge of Massachusetts, Kellogg of Minnesota snd Underwood of Alabama, going along with the wishes of the “farm bloc.” The Senate substitute for the House j bill as reported by Senator Walsh of ; Montana, would have retained for more ; Federal control over farm organizations than will be the case, now that the Sen- j ate has accepted the House bill. Senator Walsh said his amendment would : have removed farm organizations frem the present restrictions of the anti-trust I law. In so far as they are now pro- i hibited from creating combinations in restraint of trade, but would have left them subject to prosecution under the sections dealing with creation of monopolies. Representatives of the “farm bloc” contended the Walsh amendment would have nulified the effect of the cooperative marketing act, that it would have been fatal to the plan and that such a proposition was unnecessary to safeguard the interests of the American people. Senator Walsh argued his purpose was to relieve farmers of the constant wireat of prosecution whenever they attempted to organize cooperative associations without making it possible for elevator and milk interests to set in the various cities of the country and take excessive profits from consumers’ pockets. WOULD VALIDATE COOPERATION PLAN. The Capper-Volstead cooperative marketing bill, indorsed by the “agricultural bloc,” and will be sent to tho President for his signature within a few days, now that both Houses of Congress have approved it, seeks to validate the cooperative plan, and to guard against the possibility of monopolistic control of agricultural products through the Department of Agriculture. In the hands of the Secretary of Agriculture is placed authority to pass in the first instance on the proposed associations. At any time he has reason to believe such group marketing was developing monopolistic control of certain products, he would warn the offenders, then order action against them in the courts. MAXITOWISH, Wis.,. Feb. O—A fourdays’ man hunt was ended when John Donahue, murderer, shot and killed himself in his besieged cabin. Near Donahue's body was found a note which read: “I killed Jack Powers and I am sorry that I did.” Donahue, according to the widow of the victim, killed Powers during a quar rell in Donahue’s cabin on Jan. 28. Powers accused Donah'ne with being too friendly with Mrs. Powers. Mrs. Powers who went in search for her husband, told police she was held prisoner by Donahue. She escaped however and brought a posse back with her. 10,000 Persons in One City Are 111 UNIOXTOWN, Pa., Feb. 9.—Ten thousand persons, about one-hr,lf of the population of this city, are Hi from influenza, according to a statement issued today by Health Officer W. C. Hall of this city. The situation, he said, is alarming and he declared unless exceptionally drastic measures are taken to combat the spread of the disease the whole city will be stricken with the malady. STREET CAR HITS WOMAN. Mrs. Zora L. McLaughlin, 31 Schiller street, was injured slightly last evening when she was knocked down by an Illinois street car at Illinois and Washington streets. Police said she stood too close to the car tracks on a loading y.'. form. She was taken home in an ambulance.

Former Bellhop on Cross-Country Hike Freighted with a fifty-pound pack on his back and a few nickels in his pocket, Harris H. Colson, 22, breezed merrily into Indianapolis today on his hike •'from Bar Harbor, Me., to San Francisco. Colson planned to linger here a short while because he used to be a bell-hop in the Bates hotel and enlisted in the Navy through the local recruting office shortly after the United States entered the World War.
