MOTORIST HAS v EYE ON FUEL Proper Carburetion of Great Importance in Operation. In the old days when gasoline was down around the 10 cents per gallon mark, and all gasoline was of comparatively high test, economy of fuel consumption meant nothing to the average motorist. It did not make any particular amount of difference to him whether the old bus got twelve miles to the gallon, eighteen miles, or chugged along filling the air with half consumed fuel at about seven miles to the gallon. In fact, many motorists were inclined to be proud, of the gasoline thirst of their motors and boasted of how much gas It took to run the- old boat. But all that has now changed, according to a representative of the Marvel Carburetor Sales Company, 926-8 East Washington street. “With the Increasing cost of gasoline and the growing intelligence of the automobile owner and driver efficiency and ecenomy of operation have become an important factor, and no one tiling is of more vital importance in obtaining theset results than the, carburetor. No matter how splendidly designed and built the motor may be, It will not function properly if it has attached to it a poor carburetor or one that has not been adjusted properly. “The Marvel carburetor has been designed especially to meet the demands of the average motorist. Simplicity, ease of adjustment and a minimum of moving parts have combined to make it well known for economy, reliability and adaptability to all conditions of fuel, weather, road and load. Actual tests have shown remarkable results In added power and greater mileage on gasoline. “It has been especially designed to handle the low grade gasoline of today, and in design it differs radically in many respects from other carburetors. Among other unique features may be mentioned' the heat Jacket around the throttle, which is couneeed with a heat jacket around the venturi andTbw speed gasoline needle. These Jackets are kept warm by hot exhaust gases, which are piped up from the exhaust manifold through a flexible heat tube, and enter the Jacket of the carburetor under a damper v.hi<h works automatically with the throttle. This prevents the condensation of fuel on the inside walls of the mixinb chamber and uniform temperature is maintained by this artificial condition. “Our company employs only carburetor experts and we are able to give prompt service on adjustment and repairs of carburetors. The importance of proper carburetion is now a matter of common knowledge among motorists and as a result they are paying far more attention ilbr* formerly to seeing that their carburetors are In the best of condition at all times.” ORGAN RECITAL GIVEN AT HOTEL Musical Program Delights Diners at Lincoln Hotel. The first organ recital in *ho Traver tine room of the Lincoln Hotel, was held yesterday, proved to be an unqualified success. The Travertine room was crowded with diners who had come especially to hear the wonderful new Estev concert organ, which was installed when the new addition to the hotel was built recentlj The recital was given by Berta Miller Rulck and exceeded in interest even Die most optimistic hopes of hotel officials. The Lincoln Vocal Quartet, assisted liv Ella Schroeder. violinist, and CVnsuelo Couchman, cellist, completed an inter esting program of classical and popular music. These dinner ninslcalcs of the Lincoln Hotel undoubtedly will prove popular and attractive form of entertainment, and already a large number of reservations have been made for the musicale next Sunday. The entire fourteenth floor of the Lincoln has been given over to dining facilities, and this unusual arrangement haR turned, out to be one of the most

popular features of the hotel. The big Travertine room, quietly and tastefully decorated, is ideally adapted for large parties and banquets, while the smaller, done In the best Italian style, are unique. The big organ, which is located at the north end of the Travertine room, is remarkably handsome, in its gold finish and harmonizes perfectly with the decorations of the room. Family parties in large numbers may be seen any Sunday evening at the hotel, as it has become a rendezvous for fatal lies who like to get away from the routine of household life occasionally ana case the strain in the housewife by taking all responsibility off her shoulders for one day at least, by eating away from home. It was this tle Lincoln hotel management had iu mind when the fourteenth floor of the building was plannea and results have abundantly justified the wisdom of the action. COLD SPEEDS UP COAL BUSINESS Fuel Demand Increases As % Mercury Lowers. Asa resultgnf the colder weather during the past two weeks there has been a noticeable boom iu the retail coal bust ness, according to Paul J. Henderson, manager of the E. & I. Coal Company, which maintains two yards, one at 127 Fulton street and the other at 2920 Schurman avenue. “It is a fact so well known among coal men as to cause no comment, that the demand for cyal varies directly with the weather. Mr. Henderson said "Os course some far sighted individuals keep an adequate supply of fuel on hands, but others allow their coal piles to run dangerously low when mild weather is on, and seem to forget that very fact we are having mild weather tn midwinter is a sure sign that we will have a cold snap before we are through, for , the law of averages will hold In weather : conditions the si me as elsewhere. "Although we glo a general retail coal business, we specialize particularly in supplying fuel to steam plants, large buildings and apartment houses. Places of this character of course insist ou being given fuel of even grade and quality at all times. The dealer who will make biR first few loads excellent ones, only to allow tbo quality to deteriorate later, is sure to lose the oustoms of they large consumers, for uniformity of fuel is a prime necessity in the operation of thei heating plants. "From the purchaser* standpoint, now Is a very favorable time for the purchase of coal. The market is down, the supply Is better that it ever will be again during the winter In case a sudden cold spell should drop in on us. nud the householder or big consumer who places his orders now is sure of having the best quality and most uniform grade of coal delivered to hltn. Whereas if he waits, he may find himself in a mad scramble to get fuel any old place, at any price, under any conditions after the dealers’ yards have been depleted by etnorgeney. Says Department Is In Need of Men Severn! hundred audDo-s and lnspeotors for the Income tax department of the Internal Revenue Department are needed, according to a statement given out today by Henry M Trtmpe, secretary of the Civil Service Board. 421 Federal Building There are 7,800 employes now attached to the income tax unit. Mr Trlmpe said. An examination to ! till these positions will be hold through out the country on March 8 The entrance salaries offered range from SI,BOO to $3,000 a year. Advancement will depend upon demonstrated efficiency. New appointees are given a six weeks’ ; course of training in the technicalities -of the income tax law and are paid full salary during such instruction. (IBID FAUA DOWN. SPRINGFIELD, 111.. Feb. B.—Dan i Cupid's aim was not as accurate In 192’ as in the year previous in this county, glance at the County Clerk’s records shows only 1.498 licenses were Issued last year, while in 1920 1,700 couples were linked in wedlock. BANNER BUILDING SEASON IN SIGHT House Shortage and 1 Lower Prices Aid Activities. Prospects for a far more than usually successful year In the lumber trade are decidedly encouraging, according to H. B. Burnet, president of the Burnet-Bin-ford Lumber Company, 1401 West Thirtieth street This judgment he bases on predictions from practically every well informed source and from his own observations. “It looks very much to me,'4*Mr. Burnet said,, “as if the volume <f construction work done in 1922 will b.> far ahead of that completed last year. We all know that as a result of war-iime conditions, when the able bodied young men of the country in the Army, that there was very little construction work done. This, as we have learned to the sorrow of many of us, resulted in a shortage o'! ■ housing facilities, as few new homes were built for several years. And any professional or business man can tell you of Die trouble it is to obtain suitable office quarters. This means only one thing, that it will lake a great amount of building activity to bring about a proper adjustment of things. “There is a great demand for well built, moderate priced houses and I feel sure that there is going to be a great amount of activity along these lines this year. Office buildings are also being planned ip large numbers, and this is a branch of building which has been particularly Stagnant for a long time past. The lack of adequate hotel facillj * !es ,n Indianapolis is a matter too well knovr to need comment I believed that lumber prices now are -ust about as low as they may be ex--1 parted- to go. In fact I am looking for advances In the spring when the demand begins to get heavy. From the standpoint of cost, quality and the ease l°f obtaining labor I think there is no (question that right now is an ideal time to begin building operations. With low prices and high quality the person who s thinking of building is sure to get the jthe best results at the present time. “It I am not greatly mistaken we are going to find that the year J 922 is to be a banner year fit the history of Indi- ( anapolis so far as building operations are concerned.” WARNING GIVEN BUSINESS MEN Arrests Face Those Who Violate Sweeping Orders. Warning that business houses which persist In placing sweepings J n gutters In the daytime will be arresred and tried under a city ordinance which pfo I vide* a fine of not more than SSO was is- | sued today by John F. Walker, auper- | lntendent of atreet cleaning. The ordinance prohibits the depositing of any filth whatever in the street, but as an accommodation to business people Mr Walker said the department will not object if the sweeping* are put out be- : tween 8 p. m. and t$ a. m so that they may be gathered up on the regular rounds of the street sweepers. Otherwise the liirt lies tn the gutter ali day to be scattered about the street. A shift of inspectors lias been assigned to night duty to see that the downtown streets are properly flushed during the light traffic hours. SOVIET GETM MEAT. OFFICE SUPPLY OUTLOOK GOOD Resumption of Business Is Certain, Dealer Says. Increased demand* among business firms and professional men Indicate a resumption of business activity along far better lines than the last year. Is the opinion expressed by R. C. Hiller, head of the Hiller Office Supply Company, “If I can Judge rightly from conditions,” Mr. Hiller said, “especially since the first of the year, we should enjoy at least an everage year of prosperity during 1922. The demand for filing equipment and loose leaf goods ha* shown a marked Increase, and this would Indicate In my mlns that business houses are preparing for a resumption of activity on a larger scale than in 1921. , “Asa rule the sale of equipment of this sort is a very reliable barometer of general conditions, for-business houses are not anxious to put in new equipment unless they feel they are going to have use for it. “There has been veTy little variation in prices of this kind of office equipment recently, and this leads me to believe that the bottom has Just about been reached in our line, as far as prices are concerned. I have noticed that in some lines articles are more difficult to obtain, which, of course, means there has been an increased demand for them. “During the last few years we have learned that the legitimate dealer In office supplies is being more appreciated than -ever before. By the term legitimate’ I mean the dealer who has a permanent location and makes a sincere and earnest effort to build up a cllen tele through faithful service. A dealer who handles second class goods, as do some of the fly-by-night dealers, who gain the buyer's confidence by selling him a few items at a cut price, and then hanging on the difference on articles, cannot hope to succeed in the long riua. ne mfly get a little early success, but, eventually, he will fail for a certainty, as hi* customers realiso how they have been treated. “It pays the buyer In the long run to pick out a good reliable local firm, from whom tc. secure his supplies, where be always can be assured of a square deal. “We are getting our new catlogue and when complete it will be one of the finest nnd most ever published. You see we have confidence In 1922 as a business year.”
