INVESTMENT SECURITIES IN GOOD DEMAND ! Market Undertone Reactionary and Trading Inclines to Dullness. STERLING SELLS HIGH Special te Indiana Daily Times and Philadelphia Public Je-dger. Ry MONITOR. NEW YORK, Jan. 31.—Operations in the stock market yesterday reflected a feeling of uncertainty. There were isolated examples of strength among the specialities, but the general undertone was reactionary, and the volume of trailing .suggested dullness. Short selling was not particularly in evidence, but there appeared to be a good deal of scattered liquidation. There were a few price movements of more than average scope on both sides of the marked. Kresge, Corn Products and International Mercantile Marine preferred were relatively strong. Studebaker also displayed tirmness until the last hour. (Jn the other hand, marked weakness developed In U. S. Food Products, Atlantic Gulf and Consolidated Gas. Sharp reactions also took place in American Can. American Sumatra, Davison Chemical and some of the oil stocks. NeWs with a bearing on the market was about evenly divided. Foreign exchanges were very strong. Sterling sold higher than at any time since August, 1919. Most of the buying came from London, and foreign exchange brokers here reported ehat both pounds ad francs were scarce. An excellent demand for Investment securities was indicated by the manner in which the J55."<*>.000 of Burlington 5 per cents was absorbed. Tt e less hopeful feeling in financial elides is not explained entirely by the hardening in the rate for call money, or the reactionary tendency that has made i f s appearance- in the commodity group, vlt 1. the exception of grain. It Is true that cotton has been weak and more or let.- authentic reports are In circulation regu’ding the pressure of offerings of copper metal. Undoubtedly much of the hesitation may be traced to apprehension over the passage of the soldiers' aonus bill, and its trail of consequences in the for 1 of added tax burdens. At any rate present uncertainties over the action of Congress do not tend to produce confidence ill 'he market outlook. —Copyright, 1922, by Public Ledger Company. W VI.I. STREET GOSSIP BY MONITOR. Weakness in several specialties spread gradually to the general list wi*h the result that a general decline In prices was in progress when the market closed. Sojne of the selling in the more speculative issues was of professional origin, but there also was apparent a considerable quantity of liquidation. There is a general feeling in the financial community that an distribution of stocks by pools took place under cover of the wild demons:ration in the steel shares ten days ago, hence a cautionary attitude toward making new commitments. Atlantic Gulf and West Indies was the first issues to show real weakness in trading. Although the annual report will nut be ready for several weeks, it is known (hat the company sustained large losses during 1920. There has been an unconfirmed report in circulation of some legal difficulties confronting the company. £he action of the stock has been disappointing, and tired holders were among the chief sellers. Some short covering from time to time brought rallies of a point, but these were short lived and the close was within a fraction of the bottom. U. S. Food Products was another weak feature of the early trading. Under large offerings the price declined nearly two points to anew low record for all time. After the regular meeting of the board today. President Palmer said, "There is nothing to be given the public now.” The financial difficulties of the corporation have been thoroughly aired, am! the question of further banking accommodations remains the uncertain factor. There was little support in evidence. Consolidated Gr.s advanced sharply bofore noon to 9<*% on buying by short* who were fearful of a favorable decision by the V. S. Supreme Court in the action by the company for the retention of approximately $13,000,600 collected in excess of the legal 80-cent rate. When the court adjourned taking a recess to Feb. 27 without handing down a decision, there was scant demand for the limited offerings which came into tho market, and the price declined five points. A two-point rally did not hold. Last Thursday the directors referred to the finance committee the question of dividend payment, and the latter, it is understood, will arrive at no decision pending action by the court. A demonstration in the motor stocks in the late afternoon attracted attention only for a few moments, and the relapse was even sharper than the advance. Studebaker was bid up a little ewer two points against the short interest, but a large volume of selling orders in other stocks was plain evidence of tne purpose of the move in Studebaker. The buying of the motors was not impressive, while the selling elsewhere in the list was of excellent character.
The oil stocks were featureless prior to the announcement from London that the Royal Dutch ’Shell interests are about to issue additional stock of £10.000,000 In £l shares. Both Royal Dutch and Shell declined on* this news, and this selling had an adrerse effect on other oils. There was little evidence of important support In any of these stocks Some scale buying was in evidence, but nothing that would indicate sustained strength. Call money opened and renewed at 5 per cent, at which figure the bulk of the day's business was done. In the afternoon belated borrowers had to pay 5% per cent for their accommodation. Hankers said that the probability for main tenance of a 5 per cent rate Is strong, in view of the recent showing of the clearing house banks. Out-of-town Institutions ore not inclined to leave funds at this center at a lower rate than 5 per cent, bankers here say. During the morning Reading held firmly aroun 1 72 and there were confident predictions made that the Supreme Court would render a decision favorable to the stockholders of the common In the coal segregation plan. AA’hen court adjourned without announcing Its decision, the stock declined to Saturday's low The copper stocks were sluggish. At least one of the import producers now has joined the ranks of those who are offering the metal in liberal quantities at 13% cents for first quarter delivery and there are offerings unde this figure so second quater delivery. Demand Is reported as light, both domestic and export. This Is believed to be only seasonal dullness, but provides little Incentive for market activity. Coco Cola was not affected by the decision nt Atlanta requiring the company to furnish the municipal authorities with a Ust of stockholders for the purpose of assessing taxes upon the value of their stockholdings. This decision did not attract much attention but opens possibilities of which the financial community probably will taka congnlzance presently. One of the strong features In the lav's market was Associated Drygoods, which advanced to anew high levedl for the present movement. The buying was by the same Interests which have been accumulating the stock from 48, and is based upon the known Improvement In earnings last year. There was some selling of Transcontinental Oil on the belief that the annual statement will show a deficit for last vear as compared with net earnings of $510,144 in 1920. The loss, it % believed. Is due largely to Inventory shrinkage and to the cost of drilling operations.- Copyright. 1922, by Public Ledger Company. WHOLESALE BEEF PRICES.
