MYERS RITES WILL RE HELD ON SATURDAY Body of Late Jurist Will Be Buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. Funeral services for Quincy A. Myers, formerly judge of the Indiana Supreme Court and a widely known attorney, who died last night at St. Vincent's Hospital, will be held tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the home, £t.GS North Meridian street. Burial will be in Crown Hill cemetery. Dr. Robison of Charleston, 111., assisted by Dr. George Smith of fl-e Roberts Park M. E. Church, will officiate. At 11 o’clock in the morning members of the Indianapolis liar Association will meet in the Supreme Court room in the Statehouse to honor the memory of Mr. Myers. Judge I.ewis B. Ewbank. chief justice of the Supreme Court, will preside and Allan Vestal will be secretary. A committee will draft memorial resolutions. Mr. Myers was CS. He had lived in Indianapolis since ISO 9. when he came to this city as pudge of the Supreme Court. Following his retirement from the bench in 1015, he practiced law In Indianapolis and for the past few years had been a member of the law firm of Myers, Ralston and Gates. Death resulted from acute dilation of the heart. Last Thursday Mr. Myers went home from his office in the afternoon saying he was not feeling well, but his condition was not believed to be serious until Christmas day. when he was taken to the hospital. Tuesday his condition became critical and he steadily grew weaker from that time. Schuyler Myers, a brother, is critically 111 at his home in Ft. Wayne. Another brother, Alvin Myers, lives in South Bend. He Is Survived by hi3 widow, and one daughter, Mrs. Joel Whitaker of this city. BORN NEAR LOGANS PORT. Quincy A. Myers was born near Logansport. Sept. 1, 1H53, the son of a pioneer farmer, stockman and lumberman. At the age of 11 he entered the Fresbyterlan Academy at Logansport. He was graduated from Dartmouth College with the degree of bachelor of arts in 1875, and at once began the practice or law it the office of the late De Witt C. Justice of Logansport and In the fai! of the same year he became deputy city attorney. However, he continued his law studies and was graduated from the law school at Albany. N. V.. in 1*77, being valedictorian of his class. After this he returned to Dartmouth for post graduate work and in IS7S received the degree of master of arts. He had planned to go to the University of Leipsic, Germany, for a course of study, but gave this idea up when he received an invitation from Morris Winfield of Logansport to enter into a part -i nershlp. This partnership lasted until *BS2 when Mr. Myers formed a partnership with John C. Nelson, retiring Judge of the Cass Superior Court. This connection continued until his election to the Supreme Court in UK'S. During his residence in Logansport Mr. Myers had served as city attorney and been a member of the >chool boar! fur thirteen years. He also served as Cass County attorney and in 1300 was Republican presidential elector from the Eleventh district. Following his retirement from the bench he was candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor against James P. Goodrich and Warren T. McCray in 1010, but was defeated by the former. He was a member of the Sigma Chi and Kappa Kappa Kappa fraternities, the Columbia, Woodstock and Marion Clubs. He belonged to the Indiana. CITY EMPLOYE TO HOLD A JOB BY TRANSFER The clutches ot the Incoming Shank Administration will not yank at least one present city employe off of the pay roll for a while. The board of public safety saw to that at a special meeting today when It appointed Ebert C. Hitman, present superintendent of the municipal garage, to be a substitute fireman. Oilman is slated to be superseded as superintendent of the garage by a Shank appointee. He can not be gotten off of the fire force, should the Shank forces so desire, until the end of the three months probation period la up when his connection with the city could be severed by the board of public safety failing to confirm him as a regular fireman. The board also got two men under the wire as probationery patrolmen at the last minute when it appointed Everett • Johnson and Patrick J. Moriarity. ! Patrolman Samuel Blumbery was tried on charges of conduct unbecoming an I officer and found guilty. He was accused | of getting drunk and falling down a stulr- | way at 628 East Wabash street. lie cx- ] plained that he fell down the stairway sand that somebody must have given him j liquor to revive him. The board susjpended him for thirty* days from Dec, 19, when he had his “accident,” anil fined him his pay during suspension, liltimberg had been on the force since Jan. 24, 1903, and only has a year to serve until he is eligible for pension. FARMER BEATEN AND ROBBED BY 2 NEGRO THUGS Prentis Handlon, 46, who lives on a farm near Solon, Ind., was so brutally beaten by two negro thugs last night that he was taken to the city hospital. Handlon, who had been robbed of $25, was found by the police near 1819 Broad View terrace. He was unable to give a description of his assailants. George M. Shindler, 940 North Meridian street, wag walking on St. Joseph street between Meridian and Pennsylvania streets at 12:15 a. m. today when he saw two negroes carrying automobile parts out of the alley. With an oath one of the negroes ordered him to "beat it and keep going." The other negro drew a revolver and said, "Wait a minute we will hold this bird up.” Shindler started running and kept going until be reached his home, where he telephoned the police. The negroes were not found. Both ngroes wore soldier uniforms and black caps, Shindler said. Charles Moore, 213 South Holmes avenue, saw three men robbing the grocery of Carl Irang, 239 South Wurman avenue, last night. He telephoned the police, but the burglars escaped before the'officers arrived. The thieves had entered through a rear window and had carried away a supply of chewing gum, candy and a flash light. Nick Chris, 165 Gelsendorff street, saw a man in George Angleapolon’s grocery, 166 Gelsendorff street, late last night. The burglar escaped. The rear door was “jimmied" but nothing was missing. Chris gave a good description of the burglar. Raymond Butcher, 126 North Bradley* avenue, parked bis automobile in front of 1526 De Loss street last night. Later !e discovered that ft thief had stolen a spare tire. The tire was worth $25. Three automobiles were stolen last night. Joseph Gardner, 43 Kentucky avenue, reported that a truck he had parked in front of 105 North Arsenal avenue, had disappeared. Earl Hurst, 3138 North Capitol avenue, parked hi* car near the Statehouse and a thief drove the autornoblb- away. Louis Fogel, 2458 North Talbott avenue, reported hi* Nash automobile stolen from Market and Delaware streets last night. Burglars pried u door from the garage of W. C. SELF , MAN SAYS Admits Theft, but Claims Hunger Defense. “I stole the harness to sell it, judge, because I wanted something to eat,” admitted William Gill, 00, in city court today. “I won’t lie, I was hungry and 1 wanted something to eat." Patrolman Shea, who arrested Gill, explained to the court Gill had stolen a $75 set of harness owned by E. W. Boswell and Ben Long, from a barn at Harrison street and Dreyer l’iace. The policeman said that GUI occupied the upper room of a barn in the rear of 443 South Oakland avenue, and the fire prevention officers had ordered him to move ns he had an oil stove in the room the celling of which was so low that the policeman had to stoop to get into it. “Hav e you been married?" asked the court. "Yes, but I separated from my wife and family* eighteen years ago down in Georgia,” explained Gill. “Judge I have an old wagon and horse with which I have tried to ir.ak e a living. If you will let me go X will sell them and start for Georgia.” Judge Pritchard scratched out the words grand larceny and ftfuml GUI guilty of petit larceny. He fined him $1 and costs and sentenced to serve 100 days on the Indiana Stale farm, but the Judg meut was suspended, ami Gill left the courtroom arid promised to start for Georgia. Judge Walter Pritchard fined him SIOO and costs and sentenced koin to serve thirty days in Jail.

F. J. MATTICE TO QUIT POST WITH U. S. ATTORNEY Floyd J. Mattlee, for the past three years first assistant United States district attorney, submitted his resignation to Attorney General Henry M. Daugherty today to take effect Jan. 7, at the same time Frederick Van Nuys, United States district attorney goes out of office. He will enter the practice of law with Charles E. Henderson, 607 Fidelity Trust building. However by private arrangement with Alexander G. Cavins, his successor in office, he will devote part of his time to the district attorney's office for the next month or two. Mr. Mattice came to Indianapolis from Rochester, where he had been prosecuting attorney of Fulton County, July L 1918, as an agent in bureau of investigation of the Department of Justice. After four months in this work, during which time he investigated cases connected with the World War, he was appointed assistant district attorney under L. Ert Slack, a position he retained after Frederick 4 T an Nuys came into office. During this period, Mr. Mattice has made a splendid record and is generally regarded as one of the strongest men who ever occupied the office.
