MARKET STRONG WITH LIMITED TRANSACTIONS Copper Remains Firm and Equipment Group Hits New High Level. STEEL TRENDS UPWARD ®r > to Indiana Daily Times etui Philadelphia Public Ledger. By MONITOR, NEW YORK, Dec. 2$. —Considering the father limited volume of trading with transactions of less than 000,000 shares, the market presented an appearance of relative activity and strength, Buying in a few selected issues was of a confident and concentrated character, and advances were easily brought about. The firmness of the copper shares was the feature in the forenoon, with Anaconda reaching anew high level, while Inspiration, I'tah and American Smelting and Refining moved upward. Along in the afternoon heavy buying of American Locomotive and a sharp rise in Lima Locomotivestarted a move in the equipment group, end Baldwin reached the new high level of OIM3 on a turnover of about 40.000 shares. American Locomotive also made anew high level, and Lima Locomotive equalled its previous top. Several specialties were quite active and strong, among them being Jones Brothers Tea and American Ice, both of which made anew high level. The oils were steady, and late in the day tlie steel shares moved upward on a moderate volume of trading. The advance in the m'. tors was due to buying which usually comes a short time prior to the automobile show which will bp held this year ihe secohd tv- k in January. The rails were fairly steady, but made no important res pons- to the earnings statements of New York Central. Pennsylvania and Wabash which wi re more favorable than expected. The strength of tlie market mr-t h.C birgdy sot down to technical consideration. Short covering undoubtedly played its part ia the str-ngth of several of lie more active issues, notably Baldwin an ’, t'orn £* rod net s. A distinct surprise was the appointment of a receiver for Robert 11. Ingersoll A: Rro. The petition was uiad*- by the National City Bank and the Chase National Rani: on notes aggregating sIOO.tIOO. The creditors' petition placetl the liabilities at 53.00rt,ROfi and assets in t-scess of $J.t/ju,GOt>. Wall street is prepnred for further eases of this chara'-ter. P oking upon them as the aftermath of deflation. The market ignored this development. Peoples Gas of Chicago continued Us advance following the resumption of dividends. There was a report current that the company has reached an agreement with the Illinois Commerce Commission by which gas rates will be reduced. It is understood that the company is not averse to a reduction as costs of production decline. Directors of the Allied Chemical and Dye Corporation met and declared the regular quarterly dividend of per share on the common stock of that company. It is reported that rite speculative groups in this and in Davison Chemical are accumulating stock. Dut are not prepared tor any immediate advance. Finns which are active in these issues are predicting favorable developments for the stockholders in the event of the passage of satisfactory tariff legislation. Five active stocks established new high rds for the year. Two of them. American Locomotive and Baldwin Locomotive, are equipments. Anaconda Copper was the only representative of the metal group to achieve this distinction. American Ice is a closely held speculative specialty to which traders pay little at'ention. The fifth stock was Peoples Gaa.

American Locomotive was the siar performer iti yesterday s market. An advance of more than six points for this usually sedate issue was sufficient in itself to start gossip. Reports in circulation ranged from a merger of this company with the American Car and Foundry Company, to the passing of control to the General Electric Company. Apparently every office bad its own theory, each providing more good thing.' for the holders <C the stuck than the most ardent bull could desire. A sudden demand from iirn.s with Middle West connections resulted in th" price advancing to 6 por cent again betore the close. STOCK MARKET CLOSE IS WEAK One to Two Point Losses Sustained by Leading Issues. NEW YORK. Dee. 2S.—The market closed \v*-;yk today, most of Ihe active issues dropping from 1 to 2 points from the high levels. Total sales of stocks for theday were S2N.2HO shares; bonds. 515,451*.0()0. (By Thomson A McKinnon.) —Dec. 2S — Today'.' market showed a substantial increase in activity, strength being fairly uniform, although here and there evidences of profit taking. This made for some Irregularity, but on the v.hole tlie market action reflected a well defined idea of public confidence. News, as a whole, was of' a eonstruc;ive sort, railroad earnings coming .to hand continued t - show increase in net fir November in spite or passing of itie Pan-Handle dividend. Pennsylvania declared tis usual rate. The Iren Trade Review takes an optimistic view of the future. Its mention of a possible automobile production for 1b22 helped the motors. Its forecast on the outlook for railroad equipment companies accounts for the confident buying in this class, particularly in tlie locomotive companies. The old saying, “confidence begets confidence.'’ is well illustrated at this time. We feel the doubters are decreasing What has been accomplished since the las', of August merely presents the pre lude to a butt market. Take advantage of the weak spo's as they develop. HUMORISTS GIVE PICTURE-SMITHS OLD ‘RAZZBERRY’ Burlesque Art Exhibition in Gotham Satirize Highbrow School. NEW YORK, Dec. 2S.—This town Is notoriously lowbrow, with no sense of the esthetic, a flagrant ignorance of the Einstein theory and totally lacking appreciation of art. But everybody who is anybody Trent to the Humorists’ Exhibition at the National Arts Club, where newspaper funny men who turn out comic strips every day have given Father Knickerbocker's family of some seven million the genteel razzberry. The show is mostly pen and brush stuff, with a small smattering of sculpture for good measure. It is as free us Ireland. That’s enough to know abaut it lief ore we take you on a personally conducted tour of the exhibits. Now read and weep: First, there is a masterpiece of superftuiirtofic effort entitled. ‘'Noodles Descending the Smearkase,” about which the less said the better. It's cheesy. FINDS OTHERS CANNOT WARBLE. Then there is a beautiful thing by Tony Mills, called “Home, Sweet Home.” •depicting a male quartette—three men. and a tenor —grouped for close harmony at the supreme moment in the life of a male quartette—that holiest of instants when each of the four rt ilizos for th) first time that the others can’t sing. "Mona, the Mouse-Faced Girl.” by A. Garfield Learned, is a sad picture, it. reminded u.s of a girl like that we once knew. Her name was Lena. We hated Lena and always wanted to say to Lena what this picture expresses. Mona is blonde, with a sensitive pose—the ide.j probably being that she can thus better sniff a piece of cheese. BAKG PORTRAYS COBB AS ANGEL. Tony Barg has painted the muchphotographed, much-cartooned and moremisspelled Irvin S. Cobb, whose given name appears in the catalogue as “Irving.” Irv. is shown as an angel, golden harp in hand, stepping gracefully from n cirrus to a circumambient iioud. His filmy raiment might disguise his identity, so Tony has stuck in the omnipresent cigar and the face one alwayi sees behind it. This is Humor on the Cobb. R. E. Lipperfs bit of torture Is “Ask Dad, He Knows,” and is a life-like picture of the Volstead act in the form of a human skull and a bottle of whiske. side by side. “The Wrath of God" is right next, thus accentuated in its tragic awfulness. Grace Hazen her,- gives ocular proof that all real comedy is based on tragedy. 1 i•• same riling goes for C. and Grimm's 1 [ i-'ture, "When Lillian Russell Lost Her D vr.” which shows LII kneeling 1n a M-ffris chair looking as unconcerned as possible while using moral suasion in a i-.-.ir-siu-eessful attempt to repress a recalcitrant double chin. SHOWS GREEN WICH AT I.AGE DAMSEL. A carved wood panel of a girl, which Robert Laurent calls “Greenwich. AUiage," shows a young woman wearing t r wedding ring on the little finger of her left hand. All she needs is a husband. Al ITu- h's paper sculpture, “Birth r ntrel.” sums up the whole question in | an eggshell. "The Einstein Theory Explained” Is a seri. sos panels depicting nothing more than the gyrations of a dancer clad in fourth dimensional draperies. The gyrations of the draperies are in-t-rr-r- tative both of the theory and the artist's grasp of it. There are many others, but Just lorj get that you knew it. MILKS OF FIRE. SIDNEY'. N. S. AV., Dec. 2S.—The bush i Bros in Western New South Wales swept along on a front of thirty-three miles, turning over 2.0(K'.000 acres of pasture.
