DEBS TO MAKE WORLD TOUR AS PEACE APOSTLE (Continued From Page One.) he declared, was “forced by conditions.*' “It was inescapable,” he said. “Conditions forced the capitalists, masters of the world, to call the conference, it is significant only as a phenomenon ol recognition of the cost of war. Its program will do no more than save taxes for the capitalists. “There will be war in some form and war will progressively grow more and more destructive until a competitive world is transformed into a cooperative world. “Every war for trade eventually will become a war for blood. “Events are unmasking the rulers of the world. They are beginning to realize that war is sending to hell and wercking the world.” BELIEVES HARDING OPPOSED TO WAR. The Socialist leader declared he believed President Harding was sincerely against wars.” *'l am perfectly satisfied that he sin* cerely desires to end war, but he Is a representative of the capitalist system and it is the capitalist system that makes war," Debs said. The Socialist leader was buoyant after a refreshing night's sleep and as delighted as a boy because he is going back home to the folks iu Terre Haute. The illfitting, prison-made suit he wore to the White House is all he has with him. He has been besieged with visitors since he arrived In Washington. Admirers waylay him in the lobby of his hotel and on the street when he goes for a stroll. Fearing he would collapse after the strenuous events of yesterday, hi3 brother, Theodore Debs, last night locked him in his room. GREETED BY OLD FRIEND. One of his visitors was Marvin Gates Sperry, an official of the Private Soldiers' and Sailors’ Legion. Sperry and Deb: were locomotive engineers, working on. ; the same railroad years ago. j “Gene, old pai, the ex-service boys are lor you,” Sperry said as the Socialist 1 leader embraced him. "The American Legion was not talking for all the ex-service men when it protested against Debs’ release—not by a long shot," said Sperry later. “It wasn’t talking for the men in the ranks.” MASS MEETING OF T. 11. UNIONS Special to The Times. | TERRE HAUTE, Ind., Dec. 27.—Mass ■ meeting of union labor to urge President Harding to release other so-called politii cai prisoners was called today. The meeting will be held here tonight, ! The call was issued by Phil Reinbold, j chairman of the Debs reception committee. Representatives of miners in outlying districts have been invited. Final plans for the reception of Eugene V. Debs, recently released head of the Socialist party, now in Washington, ur also to be made at the meeting. According to word received here Debs will urrive about 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The reception committee, however, lots requested him to lay over in Indianapolis long enough to arrive here at 7 p. m. in order to give miners a chance to welcome him after they have finished work. Special coaches have been ordered to transpoirt miners into town. HOLDS PAROLE~ RIGHTS WRONG BERLIN, Dec. 27 —“By pardoning Eugene V. Debs, President Harding has righted a wrong committed by American class Justice,” said the Independent So* ciaiist organ. Ereiheit, today.
