MODERN PRINTING REQUIRES SKILL Wide Variety of Type Necessary in Shop of Today. High grade color printing such as ’s seen In the very best work of this character requires a skill, knowledge of colors and a high quality of press work far greater than most persons realize, according to Roland Mellett, president of the Mellett Printing Coinpnay. “Only the very best and most skillful work satisfies the modern reader." Mr. Mellet said. “He may not know any of the processes by which this result Is nehieved but beyond question he does know whether or not It has been achieved, and he is not slow to reject anything that does not come up to the very highest standards. “To my mind tie real test of fine printing comes when tne printer Is given a conglomeration of copy with a big bunch of half tones, unretouched action pictures and other diverse matter, and from this mass he Is expected to produce a book of artistic quality satisfactory to the most critical of his readers. Outstanding books of this type are year books for colleges and schools. “Development of different designs of type for different purposes has been one of the greatest forward steps taken in modern printing from the mercantile standpoint. In many instances whether or not a certain bit of printing, whether It be an idvertlsement or a magazine article, is read depends largely upon to just what extent it appeals to the eye of the prospective reader. "In the years gone by a print shop bad only a few designs of typo and these were used for all purposes. It was not long before It came to be realized that a type perfectly suited to one particular use might be entirely unfitted for another. Asa result a multitude and wide variety of types have come into existence and a modern shop must have a largo amount of capital Invested In type o* various kinds, If It wishes to meet the demands put upon it. In fact a shop that hopes to get a large amount of trade from particular clients must be prepared to turn out Its work In a wide \arieij of type styles." PAPER BUSINESS BECOMES BETTER Industry, Hard Hit by Depression, Improves. During tu,. -ecent business and financial depression no was harder hit or suffered more than did the paper industry, but, according to Fred S. Coffman, president and manager of the American Paper Stock Company, a marked lmporevment has been noted in the pas; few months and ail Indications are that the conditions will continue to become better. “The paper industry suffered severely," Mr. Coffman said, 'because of the peculiar fact that practically every other industry making us.- of paper products wore running only on a part rime basis. Take our own business for example. The American Paper Stock Company sorts and grades twelve to fifteen different qualities of paper out of the mixed paper from other industries, and sends it to paper mills In Indiana, Mhhigan and Ohio, for manufacture Into box hoard. This means tli.it we are in touch with the paper industry over a wide stretch of territory. 'Beginning last September a marked improvement in conditions became manifest. and this Increased demand was maintained until the end of October. Right now the mills are not buying as heavily as they were In September nnd October, but they are running at i

capacity which indicates a healthy condition throughout the trade and which means that the improvement will be more than temporary. From August to the first of the year is usually the best time in the paper stock business, but even with the betterment of conditions our company is about 35 per cent below normal in the volume of business being done." ADD NEW TRUCKS TO MOTOR FLEET Transfer Man Reports Increase Volume of Hauling. Increases in the volume of eommereial hauling and a better demand for storage space is reported by Max Katz of the Max Katz Transfer nnd Storage, 132 South Pennsylvania street. ‘‘Recently we added two new motor trucks to our equipment," Mr. Katz said, "and"we have found that ottr judgement has been thoroughly vindicated by the demands put upon them in a business way. It has been my experience that prompt service, and business conducted along up-to-date lines are all that business men nnd manufacturers ask of the transfer man. The man in our line who males a success of his business 1s the man who keeps his service up to a high standard. Nothing gains personal friends and an increased business patronage ‘‘or a concern faster than a high quality of service. All of us know from unfortunate experiences In the past that too often service and modern business methods have been ignored or neglected by a great many persons and firms In the transfer business." It was less than a year ago that Vr Katz, who has been io business in Indianapolis for many years, entered the transfer and storage business, but he says that in that short period of time he has succeeded in building up a strong clientele among merchants and manufacturers requiring a great amount of general hauling Iti th.-ir business. CONCRETE AIDED BY NEW PRODUCT Quicker and Better Work Made Possible by Its Use. One of the few, but most important,, objections to the use of concrete in the past has been tha fact that at times an unusual degree of porosity showed up in the finished work, <lu to an cxcess of water which “drowns" many particles of cement. When this water finally evaporate* many voids and holes are left in the finlshc' job. This fault In cement work has now been overcome completely by the Invention of anew product, qutekstone, u colorless liquid of great value, according to Fred I>, Whiting, manager of the building material department of the Indianapolis Mortar and Fil'd Company. "Qiil-kstone. when In combination with! water and the fr<> lime in the cement,” Mr. Whiting ciid, “creates an artificial warmth whb h dr! -cr off all ox.-cs water. It welds together h cement mid aegre. gates In a vltrifi' 1 manner, producing a dense, impend .ns body of concrete, w‘th n crushing strength equal to concrete that has been poured fairly stiff, tamped and tedded and cured under the most favorable conditions. “It Is n!*o of great value Jn cemen* doors because the driest cement mortar whb’h can be mixed in the usual type o, ! concrete mixer or tbnf can he spread! and grade,i to level contains Ht least 20 per cent too much water. Naturally this] excess water has a tendency to bring all

the fine particles of sand and cement to the surface, forming a slimy film on the surface that submerges the coarse aggregate. “This condtllon results in a delay In the process of troweling and finishing and frequently workmen are forced to wait so long for the mortar to stiffen that th final setting up has taken place and the troweling breaks this and destroys the bonding qualities of the cement, resulting in a dusty surface. “The use of qulckstone does away with all these objectionable features oi cement laying, and permits the finishing of cement floors in practically helf tho time now necessary for the work. The product contains no acid, alum, silicate of soda, grease, soap or objectionable materials of this character. A unique and valuable property of qulckstone is that contractors using It are able to pour concrete in temperature as low ns 15 degrees with nothing more than the ordinary cold weather protective measures.” PUBLIC DEMANDS EXPENSIVE TAXIS Obsolete Motor Equipment Driven Out of Business. Junk equipment such as was in use for motor taxicab and transfer equipment not so many years, Is now as obsolete as the ox cart, according to Mike Maroney, president of the Yellow Cab Company. With the growth and development of the business and the growing demands of the public passengers and fares no longer are content to ride la anything which is able to chug and churn its Jerky way along the highways, “The first automobile taxicabs followed very closely along the general specifications of the old “seagoing hacks” of the horse-drawn variety we were so familiar with a few years ago," Mr. Maroney said. "Little or no attention was paid to the matter of cleanliness of the upholstery and as a rule a taxicab was some prehistoric tnator-propelled freak of a vehicle that had long ago outlived its usefulness. “But those days are long gone. Now the public knows exactly what It wants and It wants only the best and most comfortable equipment available, and if a concern expects to stay lu business, it m :st be prepared to meet the demands put upon It. Our equipment of twentyeight automobiles represents an outlay cf s3.<*)o cash for each car. and It takes a force of sixty one men to maintain them at the high standard of service which we maintain. "tine of th greatest blessings to the traveling public and one which w:is not fully appreciated for a long time, but which is now understood is the ordinance making it compulsory for taxicabs to carry taximeters. The use of these machine* is a guarantee against ovetvhnr** at the hands of unscrupulous drivers and does awny with all the arguments and disagreeable quarreling that so frequently attended the use of a “hired automobile" before taximeters w>re geaerslly used. I.eng before the present ordinance went into effect, four years ago, we equipped ail our machines with taximeters and they have so equipped rvt. elm-e. “The Increased use of taxicabs for business purposes he* been very marked in the past few years. In the old days tha use of it taxicab was considered i luxury to be Indulged in at rare Intervale. Today modern business concern* realize that the lt.cn of fine saved U a big factor of economy Iri the true sense of the word and that the use of taxicabs in matters of real Importance mor** than Justifies the outlay as compared with the cost of slower methods of transportation."

FACTORY CENSUS WILL BE TAKEN Government Agents to List Industries. A census of manufacturers will be taken by the United States Government sometime early in February, it was announced today by T. J. Stewart, who will be the Government’s special agent in Indiana. Every two years, the Government makes a survey of the factories in the United States, and this Information Is compiled and distributed as is the census of the i United States. I Two years ago the censns showed there were more than nine hundred factories in Indiana. The census blanks will be sent to each of the factories in the State, and the owners of these are required to give the Government the required information. The survey asks that the owners state the name of tiie factory, the number of people employed, character of the industry, the number of days a year ths factory Is operated, the total cost of the ; materials used, the price for which they .are sold, the average wage of employes, ■ and the different qualities manufactured j by the factories. This census is taken to show how rapidly industry in the United States has grown. Although there will be some ln- ; crease in the amount of factories eslabllshed during the past two years It : Is not believed that the luerease will be as great as those shown la the report ot 1920.
