MANNFELD URGES FEEDING QUAIL Fish and Game Division Chief Appeals to Farmers. George X. Mannfeld, chief of the fish and game division of the State conservation department,' today appealed to sportsmen of the State to cooperate with farmers in feeding quail now that it is apparent that winter has set in. Mr. Men nfeld points out that not in a decade has quail been so plentiful as this season. The season for shooting quail closed Dec. 2*l, and in the opinion of conservation OuViftls, the birds left will greatly outnumber those left at the close of previous shooting seasons. It is these birds that Mr. Mannfeld says should be fed and cared for, in order that next year's supply be safeguarded and assured. So far the weather has not worked a hardship on quail. In case of extremely severe weather and if the ground becomes encased in snow anil ice, then it is imperative that quail be fed or thousands will perish for want of nourishment. In the past hundreds of farmers have made it a duty to regularly feed quail when conditions warranted. Now members of fish and game protective organizations are augmenting the -early protectionsts. With several agencies concentrating to assist bob-white through the severe period, it is apparent that the quail supply of this State is going to show a decided gain, Mr. Mannfeld believes.
