NEW TILE SOLVES MANY TROUBLES Indianapolis Product Finds Ready Welcome. For a long time builders hud contractors looked In vain for a concrete tile with adequate mortar space and. large handhold to be used for foundations, back-up work and superstructures of buildings, and has been only recently that such a product has been available, F. D. Whiting, sales manager of the building department of the Indianapolis Mortar and Fuel Company, says. And it has been left for an Indianapolis firm to produce such a tile, he added. “The Hy-Test concrete tile, which Is the tile that has solved the problem," he said, "Is manufactured ly the Practical Cement Block Company of this city. The tile becomes flint hard when cured, dense and practically waterproof. The low absorption and the smooth wall surface obtained by using Hy-Test makes it especially desiraDle. Complete and perfect circulation of air through all portions of the wall is obtained by four large air spaces, so arranged as to connect perfectly with those of the tiles below and above. This increased amount of exposed surface in these air spaces greatly hastens evaporation. The diagonal partitions in each tile also tend to draw off moisture and prevent it from going directly through the end walls. These features afford a splendid insurance against damp Inner walls.” Turning his attention to the building situation at present, Mr. Whiting said: “Rising costs resulting from the nonproductive period of the World War brought housing operations to a standstill, which has resulted in a universal shortage of building materials of all kinds. The present demand for houses In this country Is neither artificial nor temporary, and ten years of production at the present rate will be required to restore normal conditions."

PHOTOGRAPH GIFT ALWAYS APPEALS Receiver Appreciates Presonal Charm Carried With It. Nothing excels the personal chArm of a well-made, well mounted photograph for Christmas presents to intimate friends Is the opinion expressed by a member of the staff of the Holland I’hoto Studio, 17 West Market street, and as a natural result he says that at Christmas time the demand for photographs becomes greater as the big day approaches. “No other modern science has advanced with greater strides than has photography,’’ he said. “Any of us can look back on’ a few years nud recall the stiff, strained looks that peered at us out of the pictures in the old family albums that used to adorn every well regulated household. And many of us remember the days of our youth whon we were dragged to the photographer by our parents much as we were dragged to a dentist, and the result was Just about as painful, with the old Instrument of torture with which they used to clamp our heads In an unnatural position <hat strained and cramped every muscle from the necl. to the feet of the ’patient.’ "But now all is different. Modern photography has reached a high state of artistic development and today the work turned out by a well equipped modern studio such as we operate compares fa-:

vorably with anything done by the very best portrait painters in the country. “There Is something remarkable about the appeal a photograph has as present. There Is a touch of the personal in it that attaches to only a few gifts. The receiver Invariably feels a closer bond to the giver at the unspoken touch of personal confidence implied by the very gift of a photograph.’’ DAMAGED METAL EASILY RENEWED Motorists Junk Many Paris That Could Be Preserved. “New fenders out of old ones,” Is the slogan of the Guarantee Metal Enameling Company of which Thomas S. Markey is president. ‘‘Few motorists know that we cea make an old fender as good as new, no matter how badly smashed up It has been,” Mr. Markey •said. “We have had automobile owners come In with a crumpled fender and express the utmost scepticism as to our anility to do anything with It, and then come back a little later and scarcely believe that we had not substituted a brand new fender for ; the old one, so perfect was the work, it really Is remarkable what can be done with bent and battered ’Sheet metal If It Is handled intelligently. “Motorists waste thousands of dollars every year by Junking fenders that could be made as good as new If only they • were taken to a plant equipped with up to date machinery for this purpose. It would prevent a great economic waste If automobile owners realized this fact. “An interesting fact lu this connection ll that an industrial necessity Is sure to lead to the perfection of a device to meet the emergency. This has been proved recently by the perfection of a process for removing old baked enamel quickly and without damage to the metal, a thing ; that was considered Impossible not so very long ago. With the use of this process it Is possible to give thlrty-slx-hour service on sheet metal enamel work.”

MEN LIKE GIFTS OF USEFUL TYPE Presents for Personal Use in Business Prove Popular. What to give a man for Christmas, the age old problem that has put gray hair3 In Christmas shoppers from time Immemorial bns at last been solved successfully, according to Rembrandt C. Hiller, of the Hiller Office Supply Company. “Nothing is more suitable for a gift for a business man, aud nothing will be more highly appreciated by him than a gift for his personal use in his office, ’ Mr. Ililler said. “And what is more the range of gifts of this character is endless. There are office chairs of great comfort, desks of the modern end convenient type; Inkwell outfits, desk lamps, nUMonery, fountain pens, pencils of Individuality, blotting pads, desk trays. In sac ! an Innumerable variety of attractive and useful devices. "One woman recently told mo that her husband never would buy anything new for his personal use In his business office, but that If he received a present of this kind he Invariably treasured It more than a gift of any other kind. “In recent years I have noticed that we havo been having more and more calls from Christmas shoppers every year as they have come to realize that gifts of office furniture and equipment are useful and appropriate.”

SIGNAL DEVICE PLEASES PUBLIC Wigwag Hand System Replaced by Electricity. The need of a signaling device by which the motorist can make known his intention of stopping or turning to the car ahead or behind him is being realized more and more by automobile owners everywhere. The old system and band signaling has proved too uncertain and too difficult to Interpret, A. W. Dlcus, I investor of anew signal device says, and [this has led to the marketing of the Dicus signal manufactured by the DicusSlgnal Compauy of this city. The Dlcus signal, according to its inventor, las the adjutage of being in a position where it may be read from the : car ahead as well as from the one behind. :It is fastened to the windshield frame i Just below the spotlight and is easily operated by push buttons located wherever the driver chooses to place them. It has no mechnnienl features simply flashing red arrows for stop or right 01 left turns. The signal has met . with the formal approval of the State j Automobile Insurance Association. PERFECT DIAMOND ALMOST UNKNOWN ! ’ ~ Interesting Facts About Gems Told by Local Dealer. I That CO per cent of a diamond is lost !in the cutting and that 90 per cent of : tho precious stones have imperfections Is the startling statement made by J. p. Mullaily, well known diamond merchant. “For twenty four years I have been in the diamond business,” Mr. Mullaily said, “and during that time there never reaily fcas been a decrease In the price of the gems. This Is a remarkable condition ! which I doubt is paralleled In any other j product In the world. “Indianapolis Is really an Important 'center in the diamond trade, although few ! persons realize It. Practically every lm- | portant diamond broker stops here at j least a day when he is making his trips lover the country and one day there were seventeen big brokers in the city at one j time. ing the question was surprised when I answered that It would average 6,000,000 karats a year. “When the great waste of 60 per cent in the cutting of a diamond is tt ken into consideration is it any wonder diamond prices are high. Diamond purchasers can not be too careful from whom they make their purchases. If the prospective purchaser only realized that 90 per cent of all diamonds are Imperfect he would be much more careful than he Is to deal only with merchants of high repute.” HIGH WAR WAGE MAKES OUTLAWS Workers, Used to Big Pay, Resent Reductions. LONDON, Dec. 19.—The high wages which prevailed in war-time are blamed <y the go-ernor of Durham Prison for the creation of anew class of lawbreakers who have sprung into existence In the last few months. The governor’s conclusions are given in the report of the commissioners of prisons. The governor does not accept tne theory that the spirit of lawlessness acquired by men while serving with the military forces Is to blame for this outbreak of dishonesty. "The fact that women equally with men are the offenders discounts the value of this explanation,” he says. "1 think the explanation is rather to be found in the fact that high wages, once easily earned, more easily spent, are now not obtainable. FIND WAGE CUT INCONVENIENT. “Men and women, boys and girls have all become used to ’big money’ out of all proportion to the slight effort necessary to obtain It. “The slow but sure economic readjustment of the past year has created a number of discontented, reckless people, who do not realize that they have been living In an artificial wage market and unconsciously resent the changed conditions of supply and demand, work and pay. “They must have money to provide the luxuries and amusements to which they have grown accustomed so they steal, pilfer and loaf.” A large Increase In garage-breaking and motor-thieving is reported by the governor of Wandsworth Jail, whose view is that "the experience and knowledge of motor mechanics gained In the army” are largely responsible Tor this. THIEVING HAS BECOME SPORT. “A sort of esprit de corps or camaraderie seems to have sprung up among these men,” adds Vie governor, “it is a form of thieving that has an element of sport an dpleasure, with good returns when successful, and It seems to have attracted many who would not otherwise have taken to crime as a profession. “The commitals to prison for nonpayment of income tax show a marked increase.” states the Governor of Birmingham Prison. ’This Increase would seem to call for some aiternativemethod of collection such as deduction from wages when paid. The men earntng high wages are not taxed until some mouths afterward, by which time, as at present, work is slack, and they have not the money to pay.” FIRST TAPIR BABY. LONDON. Pec.
