VAST AUDIENCE HEARS HANDEL'S MASTERPIECE Rendition of the *Messiah ' by Local Chorus W as Great Success. BY MABEL WHEELER. Once again a mighty audience gathered to hear the local Community Chorus sing Handel's well-loved oratorio “The .Messiah" which for years has been a part of the municipal Christmas celebration. This season it was sung in the new Cadle Tabernacle under the direction of Ernest Hesser, in excellent fashion. The solo parts were pleasingly sung by the group of New York artists all of whom displayed a thorough understanding of oratorio singing. The soprano parts were taken by Miss Grace N'orthrnpp. the contralto, by Jeanne Laval; John Campbell, tenor, and William Simmons, bass, presenting the male parts. The chorus numbers were presented with smooth finish and nice shading, the great body of voices sounding as one powerful organ. Each year heretofore, the chorus has added a note or two of finish to the oratorio’s presentation, under Edward Bailey Birge’s careful direction, and Mr. Hesser is carrying on with the same care. An interesting feature of the event was the artistic playing of the orchestral setting by the Indianapolis Municipal orchestra under the direction of t*. Marlnus Paulsen. Miss Dorothy Knight once more assisted at the piano and Mrs. Carrie Hyatt added an effective touch with her work at the organ. Friendly Bank Dinner to Be Held at C. of C. The first semi-annual dinner of the Friendly Bank Society, an organization composed of the officers and employes of the Peoples State Bank, will be given by the organization at the Chamber of Commerce Saturday night. Seventy-five members and guests will be present. Short speeches, music and dancing will complete the program. The chief speaker will be Clarence R. Weaver, vice president and trust officer of the bank. The officers of the society are: David McCord, president; Miss Alice Shaw, vice president; Roy H. Kenady, treasurer, and Miss Fay Silver, secretary. Think Opposition Prompted Suicide WASHINGTON, Dee. 16.—Worry over opposition in Congress to the building of a great naval base at Alameda, strongly desired by the people of his district, caused the suicide l ere of Representative J. A. Elston (California), the Congressman's closest friends believe. Elston's body was found in the Potomac River last night after the discovery of his overcoat and hat on the bank. In the coat was a note stating he was “in a chain of circumstances that spelled ruin.”

as the Duchess of Glastonbury, Noel Tearle as Foljambe. The critics have accorded this cast the distinction of alluding to It ns a “star cast." "Disraeli" is not an historical play In any sense. The author has given us a charming view of the life and times of Mr. Disraeli, but the story of the play is very fanciful, and designed to show something of the prejudice of English aristocracy against the distinguished Jew, who on two occasions was appointed by Queen Victoria to be her prime minister. The story of "Disraeli” relates to the purchase by England of the Suez Canal as a means of defending India. There was no doubt but that Russia also wanted the canal. The "plot" surrounds Disraeli with many spies, one of them a : charming English woman, but the cleverness of the prime minister is shown ns I he upsets all of the plans of the Rub-

came to life last night at English’s for a three-day engagement. Joseph Barrett plays the Boob McNutt role and wbat is lacked in spontaneous humor in the book is supplied by Mr. Barrett and his hard-working associates. The show requires two acts and numerous scenes to relate the troubles and the “boneheaded” plays of Boob McNutt. Numerous song and dance numbers are introduced. Joseph Mendelssohn as Count De Luna has the best voice of the cast. Lillian Goldsmith, who plays the Marjorie Allen role, engages In numerous songs and aids in several danc> numbers. The chorus is an energetic organization. “Boob McNutt” is playing at popular prices, meaning a quarter to a dollar, and at that price it gives one a fair run for his money. * An English’s tonight and tomorrow.
