LOCAL CHAPTER RED CROSS AIDS > EX-SERVICE MEN President of Organization Makes Annual Report of Finances. The Indianapolis chapter of the American Red Cross is devoting much of its ! time to assisting unfortunate ex-service men and their families, 'William For- \ tune, president of the chapter, said in his annual report made at a meeting of the ; chapter last night. Mr. Fortune also told of the work of the Indianapolis chapter in supplying clothing for the Near East. He said the Indianapolis quota was 11,000 garments and that more than 16,000 were shipped. The financial statement given by Mr. Fortune showed that the organization had spent $67,395.41 and that there remained in the treasury at the end of the fiscal year. June 30, a total of $17,140.32, of which SIIO,OOO was Invested in interest bearing securities. Eugene C. Foster, secretary of the civilian relief committee, reported that the chapter had dealt up to Dec. 1 with 13,047 service men and women with their fam'l’.es, representing a total of 60,000 rc-rsons. E. H. K. McComb reported that the expenditures of the Junior Red Cross had been $1,784, and that there remained a balance of $2,968. The following thirteen directors were elected to serve three years: Rabbi Morris M. Feuerlicht, Frederick M. Ayres, John F. White. J. W. Fesler, Miss Martha Carey, Robert E. Springsteen, Mrs. Wilbur Johnson, Mrs. Hugh McGibeny, Charles J. Lynn. Miss Eliza G. Browning. Mrs. Alexander M. Stewart, G. A. Schnull and Frank D. Stalnaker. Mr. Stalnaked will succeed the late John H. Holliday. MENTAL WARDS’ CARE TOPIC AT STATE SESSION Speaker Points Differences in Feeble-Minded and Insane.
Members of the Indiana conference on mental health, which ended its session at the Claypool Hotel yesterday, urged that better care be taken of the feebleminded persons in the State. “We have been worrying too much pbout the liabilities of the feeble-minded and too little of their assets.” Dr. Walter E. Ferdinand, superintendent of the Massachusetts’ Feeble-Minded School, said. Dr. Ferdihand has been superintendant of the institution for thirtythree years and during that time he has had more than fifteen thousand feebleminded persons under his care. “We need to learn, or to keep more clearly in mind the fact that feebleminded persons are rot insane persons: they are no more likely to become insane than a person who has no symptoms of insanity: as a class they are more amiable, responsive to kindness, willing to work and easy to please. They are about evenly divided into two classes, those whose feeble-mindedness is hereditary, a condition which must be reduced by prevention of the marriage of those afTlicted, and those whose ailment arises from accidents or diseases that whithers fcand arrests development. In either case 'their mentality is below that of others. “We must teach the feeble minded hew to accquire correct habits when they are young and continue to do so when they have grown to manhood and womanhood, and then continue to give them a helping hand throughout the remainder of their lives. “If conditions are right he may live at home and receive his training In tne school or special classes. If he Is an actual social menace then he must be sent to an Institution. These advantages should be aforded to every feeble minded person In the State and not to a fewfavored persons.” Other speakers were Miss Florence TANARUS, Wiate, chief of the medical social service of the American Red Cross, Cleveland, Ohio, and Dr. W. X. Van Xuys of Newcastle. Governor Warren X. -McCray presided over the evening session. Dr. William Lowe Bryan, president of Indiana University, was elected president; T. F. Fltzgltibon, Muncle, vice president; I’aul Kirb, Indianapolis, secretary, and Evans Woollen, Indianapolis, treasurer. Amos Butler, secretary of the State board of charities, was elected chairman of the executive board for 1932.
Chicago Political Combination Fails CHICAGO, Dec. 16. —Proposals for a combine of the Brundage, Deneen, Crowe factions with the regular Democratic organization for the next spring primary to oppose the Thompson forces, were abandoned today. Conferences which have been held for several weeks looking to the coalition were called off because of'the strict prlrary law in Illinois. This law prohibits voter who has cast a ballot for one party in the last two years, casting the primary ballot of another political organization. It Is now understood a Brundage, Deneen, Crowe Republican ticket will be placed in the field pitted against the present administration candidates. WOOSIER AUTHORS POPVLAR.
