Chicago Cops Get Order to Conquer Rum Police Head Declares Mere Children Are Allowed to Get Drunk. CHICAGO. Dec. 16.—The* teeth of the TlUaol* prohibition act are being sharpened by Chief of Police Charles Fitamorrla today and violators of the antlbooze law are going to be bitten. The chief announced the lid was to be clamped down In Chicago “until It squeaks.” All police captains of the city were called to the office of the chief and given positive orders to “dry up” their precincts. Discovery of “cases” in any captain's district, they were warned, will be grounds for charges before the police trial board. New and drastic orders against sales of Illicit liquor were issued by the chief on orders of Mayor Thompson. J*l am going to close every place in Chicago where liquor Is sold, kept or given away," the chief saftd. “That Includes the places known as respectable where young couples go to dance and *t drunk with a resultant immoral debaach. ‘3 want to tell you there are places in CMfcago where children fto to drink, where they get so drunk thfty can’t stand up." The trouble with young people In this town, where liquor is concerned, is that they have apeed but no control.” -*'WIU private clubs be raided?” the chief was asked. J*There is no immune place dn Chicago,” he replied. The Chicago police depwtment for months has not concerned itielf to any great extent with the enforcement of the prohibition law, Chief Fitzmorris contending that the suppression of major crime was a matter of more Importance. The new orders against liquor sales constitute a radical change in poltj y.
