GIRLS, ALLA TELLS WHEN TED WILL POP THE Zone Grey Writes of Modern West—A Wife Demands Pin Money
Girls, now is the time to ask questions. If you want to know, and 1 take it for granted that you do, when the grandest boy in the world Is going to ask you' the greatest question of the day, just ask Alla Axiom, crystal gazer, at the Circle this week who Is sharing headline honors with the Anita Stewart movie, “The Invisible Fear." This Axiom person Is really uncanny at times. That’s the way he Impressed when yesterday at the Circle. A girl, whom . he adressed as i $ -Mary, wrote a ii"te a'-king All i ' T ' vll en -he was goisßl ing to Se married. Axiom in tbj 'tame mysterious manner and In ■riendld showmanship, told business men fitiout their business, advised others in business deals, told some how to stop stammering, others to consult their doctor for health and answered many other questions. My mall, I am sure, will contain letters this week asking me how he does it. Well, I don't know and I don’t care. But this I do know that be Is just about the cleverest of his kind that I have ever seen. He works rapidly and knows when to Inject comedy Into his answers. He uses a pleasing stage act. I am told that he Is a wizard at building up box office receipts and If he lives up to all predictions the Circle is going to be a crowded place during bis engagement. On next Friday morning at H o'clock. Axiom will give a morning matinee to women only. He announced yesterday that he would at this matinee tell the women to learn when their husbands or sweethearts are telling them a “whale"* of a story. This I know, that All* Axiom will thrill and mystify you and entertain you at the same time. Avery good combination, eh ? The movie portion of the bill at the Circle this week features Anita Stewart In “The Invisible Fear,” a sort of an out-of-door society story in which a "paper chase" on horses Is one of the features. The bill also Includes a comedy In which Ford owners may see how to turn their automobile lnt.. a camp kitchen. Part of the news weekly is devoted to actual proof that the Community Chest Is doing some splendid work. The orchestra again is excellent this week. At the Circle all week. —W. D. H. -I- -!- -!- IT COSTS LOTS OF TO DRESS A BIRD XOWDATS. Poor husband—that's the way you feel about a mere man in “Shams of Society,” a movie produced by Thomas B. Walsh. The poor husband In this movie has the theory that a married man need only to pay his wife's bills, question them and then deny her “pin money." The wife in question needed pin money in the sum of over SSOO at a time, and when husband couldn't see the need of such large “pins." the wife visited a fashionable gambling house for women. Os course, she gets In bad, pawns her Jewels and becomes Indebted to a gentleman who los as money on jewels and the reputations of wealthy wives. The director allows his story to proceed In the conventional way until the very last and then he hands you an awful wallop. He sure has put a punch In this movie. The husband “gets wise." follows his wife when she enters the automobile of the gentleman who loans money. You notice that the wife has a feminine revolver hidden In her hand. The husband peers through the window and points a revolver at the gentleman who loans. Then comes the terrible surprise. The gqntleman who loans money to women, throws open a door and his sweet-faced mother, two sisters who are attempting to be “modern," walk into the room. He demands that the wife of the society men, tell his sisters of the shams of society. Husband of the wife peers through the window and hears his wife relate the story of her wrongdoing in hobnobbing with fast society. women. Husband by the window goes home, thinks it over and when the wife returns home gives her a check for $5,000 as pin money. Rather a strange ending for a movie? Yes, but mighty interesting. The play is acted by Barbara Castleton, Montagu Love, Macey Harlam, Jule Swayne Gordon and others. At times the director has Injected some scenes for “effect" rather than sticking to the destiny of the chief characters, but on the whole the story is rather convincing. The photography Is of high order. A few of the scenes could be improved upon from the scenic standpoint. But It is the surprise ending of the picture which will make you sit up and take notice. At the Isis all week.—W. D. If.
CONCERNING “LADIES MIST LIVE.” It’ the crazy quilt of the movie*-. That’s "Ladles Must Live.'’ which is the last movie George Loane Tucker directed and produced prior to his death. There has been quite a fuss over this picture which was produced by the man who gave the apfißSH "The Wf!: 1135 ft!p rl - ht fn exj.f-'f .-••methi:,,' ‘ai from such a pro ' or rri ° n,l| s h^s BK been full of daia <n ,hp = r^a | n |’^' s Sjjpjpy State to witness pared for a reguhanded a sandBetty Compson. wich which contained something I knew not ■n*at. If this movie was supposed to be comedy. It is a rank failure. If it is satire, lemon juice has been used instead of brilliant satire. The picture has been lavishly mounted and the photography is of the finest quality. There are many long distance “shots” which have been skilfully handled. The east as far os names is concerned is more than satisfactory, but the director has refused to let the cast do any real acting. The list of players includes Betty Compson, Leatrice Joy, Mahlon Hamilton. Jack Gilbert, Cleo Madison, j Hardee Kirkland and numerous others. Alice Duer Miller is the author ot “Ladles Must Live” and I believe that the trouble either rests in the story, be- | cause of its complicated nature, or the director failed to blend the three themes of the story Into anything resembling a connected story. For the life of me, I couldn't get heads or tails of the story as Tucker has directed It for the screen. * The whole affair' appears to oe a satire on the tendencies of certain women of the awful rich crowd to grab off the richest possible husband,

Upper—Rudolph Valentino, who Is the featured player in “The Slielk," the only movie in local screen history to play a three weeks' uninterrupted engagement. “The Sheik’’ is In its third week at the Ohio. Lower—Agnes Ayres, who falls a victim to the warm love making of Valentino In “The Sheik.” The first real bit of explanation about the origin of E. M. Hull’s novel. “The Sheik," which is now In Its third week at the Ohio, with Agnes Ayres and Rudolph Valentino in the leading roles, has Just been learned through the I’aramonnt publicity department. Edith M. Hull is the wife of an English officer. She has spent a great deal of time traveling in France, Belgium. Holland, Germany, Bavaria, Switzerland, Algeria, India, Canada, Spain and the United States. She reads a great deal and specializes In Egyptology. She is fond of outdoor sports, riding and hunting. She plays the piano and the violin, but she “detests the photographer worse than the dentist,” which explains why no picture of her has ever b c n seen in this country except by be- publisher. Now for the really Interesting story, in her own words, of how she came to write “The Sheik ” the sale of which has long since passed the 200,000 markk : “I was in India when the war broke out and it was some time before I could get back to England. Then, as my husband had to be away. I was very much alone and my days were full with the very necessary but very dull Jobs that fell to the lot of every Englishwaman who had to keep her own village running under abnormal circumstances and In difficult t'aes. “ -The Suiek' v as written purely for relaxation and personal distraction of mind. “I have always been interested in the affairs and peoples of the East, of Arabia more particularly. I have very happy and pleasant recollections of a winter spent in Algeria. I am much interested in the country and with the really fine work that the French government has done there. I had personally no harrowing experiences that would have gffrved as 'copy' for a book. I cannot even remember how the idea of ’The Sheik’ ever occurred to me. It seemed to write itself. “I have frequently been asked to explain the ethical problem of the book. I cannot explain it. It seems to me to resolve itself merely into an exposition of the power and force of human love. Lore i£ a disconcerting factor which car
regardless of whether they love the man or not. The fate of three women is .reflected in this movie. One. a poor girl with rich relatives, who keep her in the social swim so she can marry a gold fish. The second, a married woman who has nailed one gold fish but is looking about for one with more gold. The third, just a girl, one of those dreadfully weak creatures, who falls a victim to the smiles and commands of men. The Introduction is slow, Tery slow, and it requires entirely too much time to introduce the theme a\ well as the principal characters. I have given this picture much serious consideration and I am at sea to know what it is all about. This picture may be a knockout to you. It may be the picture of the year to you, but Just between you and myself—it is all Greek to me. Personally, I intend to remember Mr. Tucker as the producer of “The Miracle 'lan” and not as the director of "Ladies Must Live.” At Loew's State all week. —TV. D. H. -I- -I- -ITIIE MODERN WEST IS PICTURED IN ALHASIBRA MOVIE. We were told in advance that Zene Grey's "The Mysterious Rider” was a tale of the "modern West.” and so it is. When you see the widow's neat little cottage and immaculate kitchen, you will learn that the rudely constructed cabin is fast disappearing from the West. However, they still "tote" guns and

not be ignored even in these very modern days. In ’The Sheik' I have tried to show how love, undesired and scorned, triumphed over fwo utterly dissimilar natures. ’The Shtik’ himself was merely a magnificent animal, selfish, cruel, heartless —until love touched him. “Diana was b's exact anithesls, selfish too, but ice cold, and almost sexless in her profound disgust for the physical side of life—until love touched her also. Love, mysterious and inexplicable, brought them together. "I have been much criticised la ‘Amer ica for the so-called ‘cave-man’ methods of my hero. I don't wish to start a controversy on tifa subject or to defend the callous brutality of Ahmed Ben Hassan. His life and up-bringing were not those of the man one ordinarily meets with in society, but Ism old-fashioned enough to believe that a woman’s best love is given to the man whom she can admire and who in her heart she recognizes as her master. "There can be only one head in a house. In spite of the modern desire for quality of the sexes, I still believe that physicaliv Bnd morally it is better that that head should be the man. I am quite happy to be called retrograde and I do not think I am altogether singular in my opinion, though I know I cannot expect mv American sisters to countenance my point of view.” the author explains.
steal cattle and even play jokes on the widow and have fighting sheriffs and all that sort of thing. All that belongs to the West, you know. The "Mysterious Rider" of this story is the son of a wealthy rancher, who steals cattle from his own father’s ranch. A rather novel idea, you know. Os course there is a girl in the story and she is the adopted daughter of the rancher. She is a brunette beauty who lends a lot of charm to the picture. We have been told that about every home has Its copies of Zane Grey’s books and we do not feel It Is necessary to give the story in detail. If you forget, just go to your book case and get down the copy of Zane Grey’s best seller. The cast is headed by Robert McKim, Claire Adams, Carl Gantvoort and others. “The Mysterious Rider” is an interesting picture and will, If we are not all wrong, hold your interest from the beginning to the end. The bill includes "Snooky,” the trained chimpanzee, in “Labor Lost,” and the regular Fox News weekly. At the Alhambra all week -!- -!- -ICONCERNING “FIRST LOVE." know, when a “Handsome Harry” comes along and tells her of his heroic deeds in France and how he is working his way through a medical college by drlv lng an ambulance, that it was all hot air? Most girls fall for black wavy hair anyway. Katherine works in a factory as a seamstress". (If you have ever visited a factory of this kind, you will recognize many familiar types bending over sewing machined when Mister Smith’s is visited this week.) Katherine is a sewet, wholesome girl and is well raised, as one can tell when he sees the neat and pretty little cottage in which she lives. But Katherine is in love and refuses to believe anything said against her lover, even when her father denounces him and closes the door on him, bur Katherine leaves also. Then her employer, who has had his eye on her, takes a hand and she resents his actions and quits the factory. Then of course her income Is shut off and so is “Handsome Harry’s" Interest in her. Our Katherine then becomes a waitress and she hears "Handsome Harry” tell another girl that she (the other girl) is the only girl he has ever loved. Our Katherine just about ruins “Handsome Harry” as well rs the restaurant. Mother and dad are glad to get her back home and so is her former employer and we could hear the wedding bells ringing for them. Constance Binney plays the role of our Katherine in a sweet manner and she is supported by an adequate cast. The program includes a good comedy with Harold Lloyd, and n news reel. How Could You Know? No matter how big your heart is, you could not help a poor little crippled girl if you did not know she existed. Your only chance is to keep somebody on the job who is watching for such cases. —for imtance: A little girl, crippled in the legs, had been treated at the city hospital. But her widowed mother was away from home all day earning a living for her own aged mother and the little girl. So the child failed to get the necessary attention at home and her health rapidly declined. Then the Summer Mission for Sick Children took her to their beautiful summer home, where she responded to treatment and now a complete cure is in progress.
