SAVANNAH IS PROUD OF HER HISTORY ROLE (Continued From Page One.) says: “What we are pleased to refer as ‘present conditions' offer no menace to our future as * people and none to us as Individuals, If we work, save and exercise wise economies. Ws have for several months been engaged In safely but rather swiftly emerging from the natural commercial consequences of world upheaval. Wo have the greatest country on the globe; there Is little to be unhappy alout —and much to us smile. We are witnessing at the present time a swinging of the business pendulum toward normalcy. Let us bend every energy In the task of speeding Its complete arrival by conservatism, energy, economical buying of necessities, as well as luxuries, Analysis of foreign markets and local markets, abstinence from needless expense and a broad desire to help others.” Mr. Thorpe was one of a large group of business men who met your representative at the Hotel De Soto. He supplemented the foregoing statement with the following: * “Banking conditions here are in as good condition as anywhere In "the Republic. Failures? Yes. We have had some. Just as there have been failures elsewhere. The South is Improving. Our position has been aggravated somewhat by the farmer, who has been carrying his cotton at the expense of the man who has advanced money to him. Bnt frozen credits are being melted gradually and certainly. Collections are fair and I look for much better conditions all along the Un-„" (MPHOVXMFNT IX RETAIL BUSINESS. Thomas A. Jones, president of the Retail Merchants Association, says business is good—much better than last year in volume of goods. Overhead has increased, and the return In money Is SO to S3 per cent less. With cold weather he expects a sharp increase in demand for all kinds of goods. W. J. Plerpont of the Georgia Manufacturing Association, which Includes steel tdoAUes and lumber, said that the lumber business In his brsnches which Included crates, boxes, tubs, etc., had been very satisfactory this year. Demand was up to normal. Labor costs were 50 per cent off from the highest, bnt 25 to 30 per cent above the pre-war scale. There was Increasing demand for the better grade of lumber and at better prices. _ v Speaking for the wholesale grocers, A. Ehrlich of A. Ehrlich A: Brothers, reported a very good demand for staple and little request for fancy goods. Collections ~ith him were slow and his

whole business one-third less In dollars than last year. BIG FERTILIZES INDUSTRY. •The fertilizer industry In Georgia bulks big. Herbert S. Cope, president of the Reliance Fertilizer Company, said his business only has one season—spring. Last spring his sales were from 50 to 60 per cent less than the year before and at the rate of 85 to 40 per cent less In price. His position was not pleasant. Many 1020 accounts had been carried over. Os these and 1921 purchases from 17 to 25 per had been liquidated. His business runs Into big money. His factories cow have on hand material to do from 80 to 00 per cent of next spring's business. William W. Williamson of Williamsou and Hauers, representing the shipping Interests, said Savannah had the best system of terminals and the best facilities generally of any port of which he knew. Cotton was handled with remarkable speed. A car of cotton that arrived In the morning was stowed In a vessel's hold that day. Exports were very, very slow. Coastwise lines-had resumed on full schedule running three or four boats a week. At one time prior to the war Savannah ran a close second to New Orleans and on two occasions exceeded that port in cotton. He was sorry he couldn’t say the same of shipments today. CITY IN NEED OF HOMES. Savannah is short of houses, Carl Mendel of the Mendel Real Estate and Investment Company, declared, although ns many hemes were being built as In any year prior to the war. Most of the buying was on the Installment plan. Last month his collection of rentals was the largest he ever had. A transportation man gave It as his opinion that the farmer was worse off than the business man. He had been asked to diversify and had done so. Today of his crops tho only thing for which he could get money was cotton. Georgia had raised 20.000,000 bushels of corn and the farmer could get only 20 cents a bushel for It. The lumber businns was looking up, ho said. Tourist travel was good for this time of the year. Through business was very much better. Down farther south the shoe business was stagnant. The people wouldn't pay the price demanded. TRANSPORTATION FACILITIES. As to transportation generally, he said there never had been congestion at any southern port from Norfolk to Tampa. Service was good and port charges low. In his opinion there never would have been occasion for Government control of the railroads If the companies had sent part of the freight to the south Atlantic ports. That would have prevented congestion at New York and other northern ports. Because they flooded northern ports with freight they caused congestion on their own lines, tied np cars and got into such a horrible mess that the Government had to take them over to bring order out of chaos.

John G. Butler of the John B. Butler Builders’ Supply Company, said farm conditions In his territory were bad and out of town collections were not good, but through home building in SavanuaU and some other points—home building that represented the accumulation of four <xr live years requirements—his general business was good. His paint business this year, was big and he wouldn't be surprised If 1922 was the biggest on record for there had been little painting of houses in the war period and now the need for It was urgent. EXPORTS COTTON TO JAPAN AND GERMANY. G. Arthur Gordon, head of the great cotton house of Gordon & Cos., said exports today were confined largely to two countries—-Japan and Germany—but all persons could see better times coming with the readjustment of the finances of the world. This readjustment was not likely, however, till success crowned the efforts of those seeking for disarmament of the nation. With success in that direction he believed the way would be. opened to extending credits to the distressed nations abroad and a great step would be taken toward world peace, world progress and world security. He thought the Georgian situation was better than elsewhere In the South. There was a lot of cotton that hadn’t been movSd. That would give freight to the railroad and cargo the ships through this port. There was a shortage of cotton. Spinners takings recently had been very heavy. The average takings

by American mills alone for fourteen weeks had been at a rate that would require a 13,500,000 bale crop. It looked to him as if cotton were going Into consumption at a very high rate —a rate that promised well for the South. To a question as to what was being done to combat the boll weevil, Mr. Gordon said, “We are fighting It ns hard as we know how. We have experimental stations in various parts of the State and every he made to stamp It out.” \ 11. C. Foss, of Stone and Webster and the Savannah Electric Company, said the street railway traffic had improved In the last sixty days. That, he considered, Indicated increased employment. Light and power were being used more also. The increase In power Showed greater demand by Industrial concerns. Savannah has been the center of the

naval stores industries for many years. Recently New Orleans has challenged her supremacy but Savannah still sets the price and controls the market. There Is a great business In this field. In the war period prices went sky-ward and there was wild speculation not only on the market here but in the leafing of forest areas. All naval stores are somewhat depressed now but there are expectations of gradual Improvement. Turpentine, which went as high as $2.83 a gallon a.ud declined to 45 cents now sells at 75 cents. the Ocean Steamship Company. The vessels of this line are excellent and the terminal in Savannah Is about as good as anything of the kind In America, if not the world. The ocean company is a subsidiary of the Central Railroad of Georgia which Is controlled by the 1111noise Central Railroad. There also is a cotton warehouse and compress controlled by Gordon and Company which Is the last word in scientific and economical handling of cotton. It has a large equipment of labor saving machinery and the warehouses which cover 50 or more acres have everything that genius has devised for the safeguard of cotton in storage.
