SHANK AGAINST PLAZA PROJECT AT PRESENT TIME Mayor-Elect Says Help Disabled and Pass Bonus First. Until every disabled soldier in need of medical attention is housed in a flrstelass memorial hospital and the soldier bonus is provided, Samuel Lewis Shank, mayor-elect, opposes the expenditure of $10,000,000 for the memorial plaza and memorial building Mr. Shank expressed this view last night in a brief talk at English's opera house precediug the showing of World War movies under the auspices of three local American Legion posts. He said that at this time he is not only against spending money for the plaza until the disabled veterans are taken care of, but he also does not believe the territory bounded by New York, St. Clair, Pennsylvania and Meridian streets ti* be the proper place for the memorial. Somewhere near Thirty-Eighth and Meridian streets, where property is not built up and land values are not so high would be a better place, he argued. “I hope the people of Indianapolis will back me up in my stand for the soldiers. I am not against the memorial, bift 1 am against It at this time In the place they are trying to put it. Let them put it somewhere else. “I want the people of Indianapolis to back me up in my fight to make Indianapolis better, cleaner, and a more moral place in which to live." The piaza project has been at a standstill for several weeks, the last action having been taken by the city council when it authorized a bond issue of sl,600,000 to pay part of the city’s share of ' the cost of acquiring the territory | bounded by Vermont, North, Meridian i and Pennsylvania streets, which must be : condemned and purchased. The State i owns the rest of the ground in tho proposed plaza site. A short time later the county commis--1 sioners, announced they would not authorize a bond issue for the county's share ■ until the bond market Improves. The city nnd county are proceeding jointly to acquire the ground under the State war memorial law. The Legislature ' appropriated $2,000,000 for a memorial I building. It has been proposed from the start that the memorial building should. In part, house the national headquarters of I the American Legion.
