JTEW YORK, Nov. 9—Ts people who are following the preliminaries to the conference think Aristide Brißd, premier of France, is not wide awake for all opportunties that pass In bis direction they are going to have a ■hock. On the second day out from France on the Lafayette, M. Brtand saw that the members of the several groups en route to the armament parley were keeping to themselves, the military men at 'one table, the naval men at another and the diplomats at still another, thereupon he made a suggestion. It Was that the travelers should not keep to the tables allotted to them in the dining room, but should move about, exchanging seats and tables, and obtain each others views, so that by the end of the voyage they would have widened their views of the aims and possibilities f the conference In which they were to participate. Baring an hour to spare after coming ashore before departing for Washington, Premier Brland accepted the suggestion of Rodman Wanamaker, deputy police commissioner, representing Mayor Hylan for a short motor ride about .Manhattan Island. Rene Vivlani, formerly premier Df France,' and Ambassador Jusserand Were in the same automobile which scurried up Fifth avenue, through Central Park and ihen along Riverside Drive, making anly one stop at the Joan a t Arc statue, which, incidentally, is one of tba few really good bits of outdoor art displayed in the metropolis. Few re.ognized the French Premier on the ride, which was made at record speed.

PEGGY HOPKINS FREED FROM HER . THIRD HUSBAND J. Stanley Joyce to Be Given Divorce Decree—Allows Wife slfloo, ooo. CHICAGO, Nov. 9.—Peggy Hopkins Joyce, freed from her third millionaire husband, whom she cost a cool million dollars, was "so happy" today. J. Stanley Joyce will be granted a divorce from Peggy, Follies beauty, within a few days, divorce Judge Joseph Sabath indicated. She did not contest his charges of infidelity and cruelty. Os course I don’t want to be quoted at this time on a question of my marriage to him.” She said she did not contest her husband’s divorce because “I felt I couldn't stand it to fight him.” According to the settlement made out of court, Peggy has to return approximately $400,000 worth of Jewelry and real estate to Joyce. In return she gets SSO,OOO In cash and gets to keep presents valued at more than SBOO,OOO. Judge Sabath indicated hs would grant
[we did not know a word of Japanese. I remembered the Japanese equivalent of “Good morning," which is a word that Bounds like “Ohio,” but looking at the watch It was well after mid-day. “Use that word if you like,” said one of the smiling officers in perfect English. “We often have our friend* from America say ‘Ohio’ after the sun has gone down. So we have made it a night and day word.” No part of the warship was forbidden to the guests. Those who expressed a desire to go below were taken there. In the admiral's cabin was a mirror that had been broken in the great battle of the Russian-Japanese war off Port Arthur. Instead of getting anew mirror, the cracks in’the glass were glued up and lipej with cherry blossom decorations. Miniature Japanese a*d American flags wern given to the visitors. Sailor handicraft was shown in small Japanese gardens, mills and other scenes of Japan built around In the upper deck. All was explained In excellent English by a young Japanese officer, who had been assigned to take me around. He told of the warship having been built in Germany long before the war, and of the newer guns coming from England. Pa leaving the warship I asked the officer of the deck for the name of the young man who had been so kind, and was told. “Oh. he is one of the two princes we have on the cruise.”

England May Build Electric Battleship LONDON, Nov. 9.—lt is possible that the British navy will shortly possess an electrically-driven warship. It is understood that the admiralty Is considering the question of adopting electric propulsion as an experiment In one of the four new $30,000,000 battleships, the plans for which are now being decided Although the United States adopted the all-electrtc warship some time ago, the British admiralty has always preferred hydraulic to electric power for auxiliary purposes.
