We Will Help You to Save Safely jflrtrljfr &atfng ant> €rust Company EXPERTS FAVOR POISON GAS AS WAR SAFEGUARD Advise Retention of Weapon by W T hich U. S. Holds an Advantage. By HARRY L. ROGERS. WASHINGTON, Nov. 9. The American delegation to the forthcoming conference will take a firm stand against any attempt to do away with the use of poison gas in future warfare if it follows the views of experts selected to advise on that subject, it was learned from an unimpeachable source. Almost limitless natural esources and thousands of skilled chemists —the United States enjoyed a position of advantage In the production of poison gas on a large scale. To prohibit the use of gas entirely la practically Impossible, since any nation could conduct Its experiments surreptitiously and spring the terrible surprise at the most unexpected moment. EAST TO PRODUCE IN SECRET. "Gas,” said Brigadier General Amos A. Pries, chief of the chemical warfare service of the United States Army and one of the chief technical advisers to the American delegation, “Is too deadly, too dangerous, too easy to develop and produce In secret for any nation to give it up.’* For example. In the production of commercial Indigo, which, in point of volume, lends the dye industry, the steps for nine-tenths of the way are perfectly harmless. At the final moment, however, the addition of one ingredient marks the difference between harmless indigo and the deadly mustard gas, perhaps the most feared of all those developed In the World War. The dye Industry, In which Germany excelled before the war, furnishes the means of producing dosens of deadly gases on a moment's notice. If the menace of poison gas In warfare Is to be removed, practically the whole of the chemical Industries of the world must be abolished, it is argued, a thing which experts say is manifestly impracticable. LIMITATIONS IN •CHEMICAL WAFARE.’ General Fries, pioneer In the chemical war service of the United States In charge of that service In France, believes the only limitations that properly can be placed on "chemical warfare” are those which might also Ibe Imposed upon other forms of warfare. For example, if it is declared to be contrary to the principles of International warfare to throw high explosive shells Into cities from a distance of 100 miles he believes it should likewise be deemed contrary to international practice to throw gas shells into that city. The American technical advisers are willing that limitation* should be placed upon the use of gas, although they will stand out stoutly against any suggestion of its limitatica. They haTe also formulated their views upon such other "novel weapons” of warfare as radiocontrolled apparatus, germs and epidemics and these views will be given due consideration by the American delega tlon. It Is emphasised, however, that American intelligence has thus far been able to keep pace with the intelligence of other nations of the world and that so far, of the score* of poisonous gases now known to hclence and actually experimented with during the World War, there le not a 6ingle one for which a defective defense has not been deTlsed by American scientists —Copyright, 1921, by International News Service.

Asa final preliminary to the opening ’of the epochal parley on Saturday, the American advisory committee of twentyone members, selected by President Harding, met together for the first time under the direction of Secretary of State Hughes who explained to them In some detail the work that lies ahead of them In the important days to come.
