HOME BUILDING SETS NEW MARK House Shortage Makes Construction Necessary, Lumber Dealer Says. Present lumber prices are now at a pre-war level If the great increase In freight rates be taken Into consideration. Is the opinion expressed by O. I>. Haskett of the O. D. Haskett Lumber Company. "It does not seem to be realised generally that lumber Is selling right down to the cost of production,’’ Mr. Haskett said. “But beyond a question that has been the case with a great many companies for the greater part of this year. “Seven years have elapsed since the outbreak of the World War and during that time the amount of lumber consumed ha* been enormous and vast tracts of timber land have been cleared. In that period the amount of lumber available for building purposes has decreased sharply and the consumption of lumber Is running far ahead of reforestation work. This means that with the pasting of each year prices simply must advance as the visible supply of lumber diminishes. “Within the next ten years the people of the United States will be forced to turn to the Pacific Coast region for their lumber, for by that time the timber belts of the South will have become exhausted At least that Is the way it look* to me Judging from the present rate of lumber consumption. As lumber tracts are thinned out the work of cutting and hauling and handling lumber will become greater a* will the cost of getting It to the market. This will result inevitably in higher prices. “Locally there is nothing to Indicate any cessation in the present rats of building. Today Indianapolis Is Just as badly in need of homes as at any former time. While some progress was made thla year, it really did little to relieve the house shortage. “To begin with practically no new houses were built during the war and inflated price* In 1920 and 1921 restricted activity that otherwise would hava been great. During this whole period Indlannpolle was gaining in population at the rate of about eight thousand a year, an! It is only a simple problem In mathematics to figure out that a house shortage would result. “To meet thla shortage a much gtenter home building campaign than ever will have to be inaugurated, and this, of course, means great activity along these lines In the future." GOT TO BE GOOD NOW. YARMOUTH. England, Nov. 7.—Declaring that "Jazz" clothes and Sunday amusement* were wrecking public moral* the clergymen of this city have requested the authorities to curb such “unrighteous doings.’’

LABOR SITUATION FAVORS BUILDING Conditions Now Ideal, Contractor Says. Indianapolis undoubtedly has been blessed with far more than its share of building activity In the past year, accord lug to Walter W. Wise, building contractor. “People have awakened to real building conditions,” Mr. Wise said, and are n9t slow to take advantage of a sltuailhn favorable to them. One of- the moat Important factors In lowered building cost? has been the Increased efficiency of labor both common and skilled. During the war labor conditions were unfavorable but now labor has buckled down to work and is doing as much as ever It did In the pre-war days. “Another Important point Is that building material prices have made a substantial drop, running from 10 to 30 per cent in the past six months. This being the case, it seems to me that those who are thinking of building within the next year should begin work as soon as possible for conditions now are Just about Ideal. “As an example cf the fact that build lng conditions are good Jnst look at what our own firm has been doing. We have put the masonry work o'n three apartment houses in the neighborhood of Sixteenth, Illinois and Meridian street* re cently. These houses are unique in design, Incidentally. Also we have been remodeling the Best Laundry with an unusually attractive terracotta front, and have done work on the St Mark* English Lntheran Church at Prospect and Linden streets, a splendidly designed bit of Gothic architecture. "At present we are doing the masonry work on the new warehouse of the Na tlonnl I’aper Stock Company. All of thl indicates that building operations arc now being confined to home building, nl i though, of course, a very large proportion | of building construction at present is o' i that character. I “It looks very much to me as if tb< coming year will be a bannor one for . building operations in Indianapolis.” STUCCO GAINS IN POPULARITY New Material Makes Winter Building Possible. One of the big problems of the building lndc.try for year* has been to obtain an exterior stucco which cau be used successfully in winter. In the past building operations which might otherwise have been carried through to a successful conclusion hare been postponed indefinitely because of the fact that it has been impossible to

Chicago Art Colony Enraged; Will Stage ‘Rejected ExhibiC CHICAGO, Nov. 7.—A call to arms was sounded today for all those whose paintings were rejected at the American show held in the Art Institute. A “rejected exhibit’’ will be held, it was announced. Rudolph Weisenbern, vice president of Cor Ardona, on international art society whose canvas, “Morning,” was among those rejected, is leading the movement. "I am flashing word of the .‘rejected exhibit’ as rapidly as possible to all who have paintings in the basement —the rejected ones—of the Art Institute,” said Weisenbern. “It will be a ‘no Jury’ exhibit. Some ol the artists whose paintings were rejected hare been most successful In the East and Middle West.”
successfully do stucco work In cold weather. However, the problem has been solved according to a building expert connected with the Indianapolis Mortar and Fue! Company, by the Invention of “Gran-A-Tex," a magneolte exterior stucco. This material, the base of which is magnesite is not mixed with water. It will not freeze, Its inventors claim, and will not freeze when applied or afterwards even should the temperature fall as low as 20 degree* below zero. Magnesium chloride 1* used In place of water as the mixing liquid. Another point In favor of Gran-A-Tex is the fact that it is not necessary to protect the work unless the rain heats directly against the surface of freshly applied material. Not only aro architectural critics said io consider stucco the most attractive finish for exterior walls on residences, churches, schools, stores and other buildings of moderate dimensions but the general public at large has taken to this method structural finish as hand Borne and attractive in appearance. Hold Funeral for Mrs. Mahala Gray Funeral services for Mrs. Mahals Gray, widow of William James Gray, who died at her home in the Dolly Madison apartments yesterday, will be held at the Hisey & Titus undertaking establishment in North Delaware street at 2:3U o’clock tomorrow afternoon. Mrs. Gray lived most of her life in Indianapolis. She is survived by a daughter, Miss June Gray, who was recently sleeted president of the State Nurses' Association, aud a son, Mark H. INDUSTRY PUTS WIRE TO WORK Large Plants Adopt Devices to Safeguard Property. With the development of modern industry along lines of efficiency not hitherto regarded of any great Importance manufacturing plants and business houses have found that one of the largest Items In whlen saving esn be effected and waste done away with is In the proper care of I tools, stock, etc. To accomplish this saving there has grown up a large demand fur wire devices of various kinds, according to H. L. De Vries, manager of the Indianapolis Wire and Iron Works, ! 122 East Maryland street. "The most effective way for a manufacturer to guard his stock and tools," ! Mr. De Vries said, “Is by the installs | tion of wire stockrooms, wire tool cribs, etc. This has been don* *xteiislvcly in the East and the enormous plants of Dodge Brothers and Henry Ford are making use of them. "School boards of many cities have found It a matter of almost absolute necessity to erect protecting guards of wire over all basement windows and gymnasium windows, and do sway with the endless replacing of glass. “In this connection our concern has recently put in a large amount of wlr* work for these purposes at the new school addltifgis at University Heights and Edgewood, Just outside of Indianapolis “Bronze grilles, wickets and cages for bank and office purpose* are also coming Into more general use, and only a short time ago we manufactured a large amount of special work of this character for the new Mercedes National Bank at Mercedes, Texa*. one of the finest banks in the Lone Star State, “Incidentally, the number of Inquiries we have received indicates that slowly but surely business Is returning to something aproachlng normal and the outlook Is brighter than It has been for some time past."
