LONDON TIMES SEES NO HOPE OF PEACE IN ERIN Threatened Split Averted Temporarily and Delegates Adjourn Until Monday. DISCUSSION SPEEDED LONDON, Oct. 21.—The threatened break-up o£ the Irish peace conference today over the obstacle of recalcitrant Ulster failed to take place. After a session of nearly two hours the parley adjourned this afternoon until Monday afternoon. The Sinn Fein delegates left the Premier’s official residence shortly after 1 o’clock and hurried back to their headquarters for a consultation among themselves. n The standpat attitude of the Ulster ttnionlsts and Eamonn De Valera's mesaage to the Pope saying Ireland would ! •tsist upon independence had cast dark Stouds upon the peace horizon when the conference was renewed. ! The London Times charges the “lrrec- ■ •acilable” forces in Ireland are deliberately working to wreck the Irish conerence and that they gained strength from De Valera’s telegram to Rome. SEES LITTLE HOPE OF IRISH PEACE. * “The message will fill his holiness with fflsmajL and will certainly arouse the Indignation of the people of England and ; the dominions,” said the Times. “Toward the pope it is an act of impertinence: toward King Geirge it is unmannerly to 1 ■lhe point of churlishness. If It really ; •peaks for the majority of the Irish, the £hauees for peace in Ireland are small.” I *■ The British cabinet has decided the con- ■ iterance shall be speeded up to the limit, the Premier was understood to have told , >is colleagues that he considers the sit - lation grave and that be Is becoming Convinced that the Irish' are purposely i staging a crisis to prevent him from gofag to Washington. The Premier is said j to believe that the Sinn Feiners fear the j sffect of his presence upon public opinion la America. ■•When the parley was renewed at noon, after a recess of three days, It was Earned a deadlock has been reached in tome of the committees that are working tut details. Ulster refuses IRISH TERMS. " Two developments had occurred during 4be recess to offset the progress previously made: 1. Formal declaration by the Inion- . Ist government of Lister, that l ister will not consent to a single Irish parliament which will give the Sinn - Fein domination of all Ireland. 2. Eamonn De Valera's message to Pope Benedict stating the Sinn Fein * is determined upon Irish independe once. * De Valera's telegram was described as g bombshell. An official who ig in touch the inner circles said negotiations Appeared to be on the-verge of a break, but British officials were hopeful the obstacles would be overcome. ■ It was learned Premier Lloyd George would use as an argument the resolution drawn up by thirty-five rebellious union--Ist members of Parliament expressing grave apprehension over “negotiations j with delegstes who have repudiated the • Crown and are under oath to establish a %epublic.” The premier planned to point out in I the conference that “England as well as ; -Ireland, is hampered by radicals and that it behooves the leaders on both sides to prevent wreckage of the peace r
