WORLD WAR NOW ENTERED INTO CITY CAMPAIGN Shank Says He Was Too Old to Fight, but Questions Ralston Relatives. GOT PEACE JOB FOR SON? Boyd M. Ralston and Samuel Lewis Shank, rival candidates for mayor, are fighting the World War over. Wednesday evening Mr. Ralston declared : “We never would hare won this war if all our soldiers had been like out noble Lew." Thursday evening Mr. Shank replied: "Now, isn't that ridiculous and unfair? Why, I was too old to be a soldier and I know I wouldn’t have made a very fine figure as a soldier. Bui, was Ralston a soldier? “And what about his son and son-in-law? Were they soldiers, even though they were of military age and ablebodied ?“ DID RALSTON USE HIS INFLUENCE? A man in the rear of the room interrupted : "I know about how much money Ralston spent to keep his son-in-law ont of the Army when he was drafted. I was working for the Superior Sheet Metal Company when Ralston's son-in-law was drafted and I know that Ralston spent a lot of money to keep him out of the Army and didn’t get by with it either. Why, it was common talk around the factory that this man actually cried when he found that he had to go to the Army.” Mr. Shank went on: “Ralston’s son got cold feet when it came time to get in the army and the old man finally got him some kind of a job over here in the United States, while your boys were wading through the mud in France. “I did the best I could to help raise the money to help win the war, but I do think it is ridiculous for Ralston to say those things about me." Mr. Shank denied connection with J Herbert Hartman, Republican nominee for city judge, involved in the Francis confession. He said he voted for Johe Engelke for city judge in the primary and Mrs. Shank for Delbert Wilmeth. "Ralston and the News can’t blame tree for Hartman being on the ticket." he said. “He would have been on the ticket just the same If Howe had won the nomination for mayor. But everything will come on tall right. Time will settle it.” Assorting that he thought he would com > -t with the better record. Mr. Shank said he would like to have a committee of clergymen investigate the pasts of Mr. Ralston and himself. “I believe I am so much better fitted morally, by experience, and in every way, that the people will forget all about this stuff Ralston and the News is saying about me if a committee of preachers ■ found out the real facts and told the public about them. All I want is the j truth.” The Shank meetings were in Bright- ; wood, all three being well attended. Others who spoke were John W. Rhode- i bamel .nominee for city clerk, and Theodore Bernd. councilmanie candidate; R. E. Updike. Frank Benaugh and William A. Edwards, of the Brightwood Republican Ciub. Mr. Ralston spoke at Clifton and Udell and South East and Prospect streets last evening. He scored Mr. Shank for using “vaudeville” in his meetings, declared Mr. Shank should not talk about Mr. Ralston being in the rent profiteering business because the Shank moving rates are twice what they used to be and renewed numerous promises he has made for good government. Thomas K. Garvin, Democratic nominee

CHANGE FROM FORMER TENETS OF CATHOLICS Women of Church Will Now Work With Other Organizations. Special to Indiana Daily Times and Philadelphia Public Ledger. By CONSTANCE DKKXEL. WASHINGTON, IX C., Oct. 14.—The first, convention of the natioual council of Catholic women, meeting here, marks 8 decided departure from the policy of the Catholic Church. Heretofore, Catholic women have been advised to keep within the coniines of the home. Even charity work was left usually to the clergy and the nuns. Catholic women now are to go out into the wide world to cooperate with other women’s organizations. Briefly, that is the raison d’etre of the nationai eouncii of Catholic women, which
