U. S. ENTERS RACE TO GAIN DYE INDUSTRY IChance Seen to Lead England and Germany in Coloring Exports. WASHINGTON. Oct. 11—The American Infant dye industry, now selling its products in foreign markets at the rate of $25,000,000 a year, is engaging In a three-cornered race for world supremacy with England and Germany. American dye manufacturers during the next three or four years, according to officials of the Coujmerce Department, have a fair chance to capture the bulk of the world trade in coloring materials and chemicals. American-made dyes now are selling In enormous quantities in Japan, China and India, Virtually all dye stuffs consumed in the United States now are of domestic manufacture, with the exception of some very extreme specialties imported from Swiizeriand. Supremacy in the dye industry for the United States means much more than financial success for the particular industry concerned, officials point out. It spells cheap fertilizer and a commanding position throughout the world in the matter of explosives. Those two things run parallel with the dye industry. British dye manufacturers are protected from foreign competition by a license act under which all importers may be regulated by the Government. The temporary embargo on imports of practically all dyes into the United States is intended to afford equal protection to this country’s manufacturers. The German industry is being looked to as the only serions competitor of the American dye manufacturers. Exporters in the United States have little fear of iserions competition by the British, the "commerce reports disclose. The German government, according to advices received by the Commerce Department, is making an investigation of the industry to determine whether government subsidies or other assistance may become necessary. Chemicals are reported as “slow.” Some fertilizer is being shipped out. Nitrate and phosphate plants are doing what is described as a “fair amount of business.” Plants handling coal tar products are bolding down their output, but have been able to retain a majority of their workmen.—Copyright, 1921, by Public Ledger Company. COST OF HELIUM TO BE CUT IN HALF Reduction Due With Capacity Output. FORT WORTH. Texas, Oct. 14.—The United States Government pays approximately 20 cents per cubic foot for the production of more than 20”-,000 cubic feet of helium a month at the Fort Worth plant, the only one of Its kind In the world. When capacity production is reached the cost will be reduced by one-hall, according to Lieutenant Commander Allan G. Olson. U. S. N, officer in charge of the plant. In the warehouse is stored the majority of the world’s supply of helium in steel cylinders, awaiting consignment to army and naval aviation centers. Tne cylinder necessary to the storage and transportation of the heiium represent an expenditure of more than $4,000,000. I Although the production plant is situated here, the natural gas, containing about 1 per cent helium, is extracted by secret process and 1 brought from the petroleum fields through a pipe ltne built j by the Government at a cost of more than ; $1,600,000. The gas, after being liquified and the 1 helium extracted, is again allowed to return to its natural state, a.nd Is then sent again through pipe lines for commercial consumption.—Copyright, 1921, by Public Ledger Company. CALIFORNIA FOWL HIT UP MASH AND GO ON DEBAUCH River of Moonshine Sadly Demoralizes Poultry and Birds. LOS ANGELES, Oct. 14. —Many are the trials and tribulations of prohibition as enforced in Southern California. But the residents of a fashionable Los Angeles district that was recently “raided” by Federal authorities believe they have anew brand of prohibition frievance. When the officers charged upon the foes of Amendment 18, occupants of a beautiful home, they obtained several hundred gallons of moonshine whisky with a kick like a Government mule, several hundred gallons of an ambrosial compound known as mash, a huge still, mid odds and ends of other thiugs that give the boot to bootlegger. THEN FUN STARTS. Either In an effort to get rid of the contraband, or through accident, some of the mash was poured from the windows of the honse of guilt, ran into the yard and penetrated even unto the sacred precinct of the neighborhood chicken runs. When the early risers among the barn yard denizens awoke next morning and went foraging they made a discovery and gave the high sign to the rest of the flock. After which the following events happened. A scouting pigeon saw the chickens from afar and after wigwagging home to his family proceeded to fall off the , water wagon.
