CHICAGO, Oct. 13—Charlotte Cattles, 42, an opera singer once regarded as a star in European circles, lies very near death today In the county hospital from poison self-administered. She swallowed the poison in her room in a local hotel. Despondency over her failure to obtain a position with the Chicago Opera Company is believed to have been her motive. Several years ago, in Europe, Miss Cattles sang before Mary Garden, now the director of the Chicago Opera Company. Miss Garden, it is said, promised to help her in her operatic career if ever an opportunity offered. When Miss Cattles learned of Mis* Garden’s appointment as head of the Chicago Opera Company she came here to hold Miss Garden to her promise. Miss Garden, however, was in Europe. Other officials of the opera company eonld do nothing. Miss Cattles’ funds ran out and the hotel where she was staying became insistent regarding its bill of SSOO Before swallowing the poison. Miss Cattles wrote a note to George M. Spangler, busines manager of the opera company, in which she asked that Harold P. McCormick, sponsor for the company, send her body to New York for burial beside that of her mother, in Evergreen Cemetery. She asked that her parrot—her only companion—be chloroformed and buried with her. GOVERNOR SMALL TRIAL SET NOV. 1 Change of Venue May Cause Capital Move. WAUKEGAN, IIL. Oct. 13.—Representatives of Governor Leu Small and those who will prosecute him on the charge of alleged embezzling of State funds today tentatively set Nov. 1, as the date of his trial. Governor Small was granted a change of venue from Sagam'.n County to Lake County on agreement of counsel. It is expected the State capitol will be moved to Waukegan during the trial which promises to be long and drawn out. State officials, acting as an advisory capacity to the Governor, plan to accompany him here and stay during the trial. Vern Curtis, banker will be tried with Governor Small. Gates, Claiming to Be Son of Wealth, Held CHICAGO, Oct. 13—Robert L. Gates, who claims to be the son of James L Gate*. Milwaukee millionaire, is held here today charged with passing worthless checks which the police say will total $50,000. Gates said his arrest was a mistake: that he can make good all the checks he made out. Kosciusko County Has Cholera Scourge Special to The Times. WARSAW, lnd., Oct. 13.—Farmers of Kosciusko County are losing SI,OOO a day from hogs dying of cholera. Tom Potter county agricultural agents, said today. Over fifty droves are afflicted he added. While the official text of the League of Nations decision partitioning Upper Silesia has not been made public, it is accepted here as a foregone conclusion that Germany will not pet what she asked for and the Wirth cabinet faces tho most critical period of its existence. Pessimism over Upper Silesia has knocked the bottom out of the chance of the German people's party entering the present government. This offer would have assured the next payment of reparations without question. But it was made on the expectation that Upper Silesia would not be divided and would furnish Germany with a rich mineral and industrial reservoir from which to draw future j wealth to pay debts.
