EXECUTIVES OF RAILROADS TO DISCUSS LABOR 150 Meet in Chicago Next Week to Iron Out Wage Situation. CHICAGO, Oct. 7. Meetings that eventually may develop Into a “peace conference’’ for the settlement of disputes that have brought the railroads of the country to the verge of a general Strike, will be held In Chicago Oct. 14, it was announced today. One hundred and fifty executives, representing the leading railroads of the United States, will meet here on that date. Although no formal announcement has been made. It Is regarded as certain that the purpose of the meeting will be to discuss the attitude of the roads toward the threatened strike. Coincidentally, 600 general chairmen of the railway unions will convene here to discuss plans. The count of the strike vote that has been taken by the railway brotherhoods will have been completed by neat Monday, it is believed, and the union leaders will know definitely the attitude of their membership toward a strike. There seemed little doubt, but that the union officials will be empowered to caU a strike if they decide such a move is Justified. Observers of the situation declared the union leaders will use the strike vote as a weapon with which to obtain wage concessions from the roads and to bring pressure to bear upon roads that have given evidence of a hostile attitude toward the unions. Tho railway executives are expected to make an effort to evolve a plan that will forestall any such general tie-up cf transportation facilities as would result from a Nation-wide strike. Although the meetings are entirely separate their coincidence as to date has given rise to the belief that negotiations will be opened that will result in a solution of the present labor problem of the railroads. — FINAL PROGRAM WEEK’S RECITALS Hansen Noonday Concert for Saturday.
