LEVI P. HARLAN, FORMER STATE SENATOR, DIES Well - Known Lawyer and EducatofSpent Life Here. btrrl P. Harlan, awe H-known lawyer of this city, died at his home, S3 South 6h*nnan drive, last nlsht, following a long Illness. Death resulted from a complication of diseases. Mr. Harlan was born March S, 1853, on a farm about six miles east of Indianapolis and he spent his entire life in this community. He was the son of Austin B. and Elizabeth L. Harlan. After graduating from the public schools he attended Northwestern Christian University, now Butler College, and in 1873 entered Union Law College of Chicago, which has since become the law Ueparonent of Northwestern University. In 1875 he was admitted to the bar, but did not begin the active practice of law until thirteen years later. In the meantime he taught in the public schools for one year and was then elected county

superintendent of schools, a position ha held for ten years. Following that ha was connectad with the Marlon County treasurer's office for more than two years. In 18S8 he began the practice of law, a profession ha followed until his death. Mr. Harlan was active in Democratic poUtlcs and in 1904 made an unsuccessful race for Congress against Jesse Overstreet, Republican. In 1903 he was elected State Senator from Marion County, Ha was married twice. He was married to Miss Sarah L. MaVey Oct, 3, 1577, and she died Dec. 3, 1897. In 1902 he was married to Mrs. Lillian Carter. The widow, two daughters, Miss Clara Harlan of Washington, D. C and Mrs. Stanley L. Morton, 3234 Broadway, and ona son, Horace P, Harlan of Richmond, Ind., survive. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.
