FIRE LOSSES IN t U. S. LAST YEAR * HALF A BILLION Statistics Show 15,000 Lives Lost and 17,000 Injured. The Importance of preventing fires and of halting the rapidly increasing losses to life and property, which is being stressed throughout the country this week on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Chicago fire which occured Oct. 1, 1871, has become a matter requiring the constant education of the public, in the opinion of Crank O. Jordan, chairman of the fire prevention committee of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, and Jacob H. Hilkene, chief of the fire prevention division of the Indianapolis Fire Force. In discussing the extent of fire losses in the United States, which, last year, involved the death of more than fifteen thousand men, women and children, the serious injury of an additional seventeen thousand persons and a property loss of more than $500,000,000, Mr. Hilkene said: “Suppose that some day we should read in the newspapers, under blatk headlines, a Government proclamation in the following words: ‘The people of the United States will hereafter be required to contribute to the Government a special levy of $1,370 000 per day, which amount shall be Immediately destroyed. Also, there must be furnished each day fifty persons who shall be put to a painful death.' If you read thnt In the papers you would think it a joke or that the editor of the paper was crazy. "excepting the Government proclamation, this is really happening each day in the year in our country, and will continue until jeople awake to your responsibility.” “Fire strikes at the basis of our prosperity in several ways,” Mr. Hilkene added. "It destroys not only materials, but human labor as well. For example, the burning of a wooden house does not mean merely the burning of the tree which furnished the lumber. It means the wasting of the transportation, the handling, the sawing, planing, the fitting ; in fact, all of the work of the minds and hands which caused it to become a complete bnilding.” Figures issued by William Curran, superintendent of the Indianapolis Salvage Corps, show that of a total tire loss of $1,813,980.00 In Indianapolis for 13-0. $345,000.00 was the total as a result of fires in dwelling houses and that of a total number of runs of 3,450, 2,140 were to private residences. Statistics for a five-year period from 1916 to 1920, issued by Mr. Curran, show that the total fire loss for Indianapolis for 1916 was $683,380.00 of which amotant the loss to dwelling bouses was $110,000.00. The tota' loss in 1917 rose to $769,901.00. In 1918 it was $2,049,938.00, the enormous increase being accounted for by the fire in the Industrial building at West Tenth and Cr.nal. In 1919, the city's tire loss was $1.‘J65,937.

WILDS PIONEER PASSES AT 94 Patriarch of Canadian Wilder ness Dies at Montreal. MONTREAL,. Oct. 4.—Colin Rankin, who died in Montreal recently at the age of 94, was the first native Canadian to enter the service of the Hudson Bay s Company. After a half century in the company's employ this patriarch of the fur trade retired as chief factor in 1898. He was taken Into the Hudson's Bay Company's service in IS4B by Sir George Simpson, known as the "emperor governor." Sir George was one of the ablest of the long line of governors that began in 1670 with Prince Rupert, famous champion of the house of Stuart in Cromwellian wars. Under him the company was merged with the North West Company, which for years hud been its deadly rival in the fur trade. Fire Chief John C. Loucks asked the board to order the change, asserting that the water company submitted the wrong samples of hydrant connections to the Stutz Fire Engine Company while the pumpers were being constructed.
