SPECIAL TRAIN MAY CARRY YETS TO KANSAS CITY Plans of Legionnaires to Be Decided at State Session. 2 CONVENTIONS SOON ■With registrations coining Into State headquarter* every day, L. Russell Newgent, State adjutant of the American legion, expect* the Indiana delegation to the American Legion national convention nt Kansas City, Oct. 31 and Nor. 1 and 2 to numler more than 250. Whether a special train to carry the Boosters will be chartered will be decided at the State Legion convention In Wabash, Oct. 10 and 11, Mr. Newgent has annonnced. A committe composed of Raymond S. Springer of Connersville, Arthur Stone of Evansville, and Frank Mellale of Logansport has the matter of chartering a train, In charge. All thoee who expect to attend the convention must register at State headquarters In order to have res.* ervatlona for quarters In Kansas City made for them. KEEN INTEREST IN CONVENTIONS. Interest In both the State and National conventions Is at a high pitch among legionnaires, Mr. Newgent said. The vital questions to be considered at the State meeting are attracting attention while the splendid program of Instruction and entertainment, particularly the latter, at Kansas City, are causing many ex-service moa to save their dollars and vow to get to Missonrl by rail, air or afoot. The expression "by air" In this connection Is nsed advisedly, Mr. Newgent said, because some Indiana flyers may snter an air contest for members who fly to the convention, conducted by the Flying Club of Kansas City. First prize goes to the Legion aviator who makes the fastest time from his home to Kansas City, the minimum distance recognized being 600 miles. All Indiana is outside this limit o all Hoosier I.egion birdmon are eligible. The Flying Club will conduct an air show during the convention, one of the big features planned being an attempt to break the world's altitude record. OFFER TO MARRY FREE OF CHARGE. Another feature which may prove of tmmense interest to some of the Indiana buddies is an offer of the Rev. John W. Inzer, national chaplain of the legion, to marry free of charge any legionnaire who brings his Intended to the convention. The convention committee will pay for the license and a Kansas City jeweler will provide all the rings. The brides will be guests In some of the best homes of the convention city. There Is considerable talk of the Indianapolis American Legion Band going to Kansas City. The band may be entered in the SI,OOO first prize band contest. The band probably will go to the State convention also. National legion headquarters Is completing 'final details of the business end of the Kansas City convention program Several bureaus of the national organization are functioning In the Missouri city, while the legion men of the town

Unusual activity prevailed In all departments of tho State as a result of the closing of the fiscal year today. Most of this activity centered In the office of the auditoi where adjustments of funds were being made. Three Institutions have spent more than their appropriations and have been required to dip Into the funds for tho next fiscal year. These are the colony for feeble minded at Butlervillo, the State Tuberculosis Sanltorlum at Rockville, and the woman's prison at Indianapolis. The prison has spent only a little more than S2OO more than Its appropriation, but the other institutions have run oTer in substantial amounts, although tho exact figures can not be determined until tho year actually closes. A number of the State department heads were breathing easier as a result of the prospect of new appropriations for the new year. This is especially true of the office of the State fire marshal and of the superintendent of buildings and grounds. Both offices are being operated out of the Governor’s emergency fund. 8o far os is known now, no other office has run over Us appropriation. A number of departments will turn back unspent money, while a number of others have been spending theirs right and left in an effort to dispose of all of it. These expenditures are being made largely for printing and supplies.
