Sea Traffic—Vacation travel almost 8* good as last year—ln trans-Paclflc passenger business American craft are handicapped as against the F>rltish and the subsidized Japanese ships, yet distinct headway is being made. A galling feature is the tendency of Americans to patronize Japanese or British ships in pref-* erence to American, despite superior ac commodation of American vessels of the new type. This extends to attaches of our Government. A protest has been entered to the Secretary of State. A particular effort is being made for the China freight trade. This shows every promise of succeeding. The Admiral line, which esiablished its service recently, is overbooked now. Railroads—lmproved roads west of the mountains are cutting into summer passenger traffic and local passenger business is decreasing, owing to the automobile. There has been a noticeable increase, however, in freight and passenger business since Sept. 1. The Courts—Nothing in America is so surprising, and at the same time so cheering, as the relatively small number of bankruptcies, considering the extent and the force of the liquidation. Groceries—Wholesale grocery business excellent, outstanding arcounts satisfactory-. Ctoeks never before so low. Conditions fin the Paelfle ('oast sounder than in thi East. Mfrehants owe less today than e'er liefore in the history of the city. Seattle is through with shipbuilding. Is not losing population. Moro single houses are being built than before. and no apartment housu construction. High railroad rates are one drawback to the Northwest. Crops on th whole are satisfactory ar.d prices better than expected. One trouble with most people was in measuring everything with the 1919-1920 yardstick when the 19111915 would be a better one. If the latter measurement were used it would b seen that when we were groaning and waiting we were doing more than just before the war.

BACK-TO-LAXD MOVEMENT. One great change in the Pacific Northwest was the extent of the back-to-the-iand movement. The small farm development and the constant improvement in culture of the crops—vegetable, animal and fruit —promise much for the stability and wealth of America. The Lawyer—America is losing greatly by failure to give proper attention to Alaska. The possibilities in that territory are illimitable and nothing is more repressive to their development than the utterly stupid conduct long maintained by Washington. Electric Power—Business good. The apple yield of Washington aggregates 25.000,00d bushels. Much of this fruit will come through the ports to reach via the canal, the southern, the Atlantic and European markets. The peach yield of 1920 was 423,000 bushels This year is is 1,268.000 and there will be 1.600,000 bushels of pears. The hay crop is record breaking, while oats, barley and potatoes are excellent Wheat is moving in volume. Five million bushels for export through this port were booked yestreday.
