Carter of Superior Court, Room 5, a bondsman who is disqualified from a property rights standpoint can not be denied the right to go on the bonds of more than one person. J udge Carter made this ruling late yesterday in admitting Thomas Johnson, a truck driver, to ball vrilh S. C. N'lnian as surety. The evidence showed that City Judge Pritchard in enforcing his rule that a bondsman could not be on more than one pending bond at a time, refused to accept bond for Johnson with N'iman as surety. Johnson brought habeas corpus proceedings yesterday before Judge Carter ©n the grounds that the statutes designate the qualifications of bondsmen. Prosecutor William P. Evans argued it was up to the discretion of the court concerning who could be on a bond. He contended the court had some concern in the motive of a surety going on a bond Counsel for Johnson contended when a man offers himself as surety and is financially qualified, the court has no discretion but to accept the surety. Judge Carter declared the court had the right to accept only bondsmen who seemed capable of producing the defendant in court at the required time. Judge Pritchard, for some time, had attempted to break up the practice ot professional bondsmen who “had haunted the corridors of the police station.” The ruling of Judge Carter automatically wipes out the bond, order of Judge Pritchard. ROBBERS BUSY DURING NIGHT Several Thefts Reported of Money, Clothes—One Hold-up. A series of robberies and thefts were reported to the police today. * While the family of Samuel Howard, C33S North Pennsylvania street, were in the dinlug room last night, a thief entered the house through aa unlocked front door and carried away a purse containing $‘J. The house was ransacked A burglar broke into the home of 1,. Lee, lKii Park avenue, by foreiug a ctdlar window. A gold ring, a silver bar pin and a sorority pin set with emeralds was stolen. A sneak thief entered the residence of Mrs. Joseph H. William Loy. f.20 Cable street, a driver for the Grocers' Baking Company, last night told the police he was held up and robbed by two negroes at - 30 a. in., Sept. 24. Baird telephoned the detective department and reported he was driving an automobile on the Crawfordsville pike twelve miles northeast of the city, and he was halted by three men. One, who was under the influence of liquor, covered him with a revolver, he said, while the other two searched his car. They said they were officers but failed to exhibit n badge. Nothing was taken, Baird reported.

BRITISH WEIGH WORDS IN NEW NOTE TO IRISH Original Draft Being Toned Down for Transmission Tomorrow. RIOT RULE IN BELFAST LONDON, Sept. 27.—The original draft of Premier Lloyd Georges Irish peace note to Eamonn De Valera, which may be sent to Dublin tomorrow, is being modified, according to a dispatch from Gairloch today. The Gairloch correspondent of the Daily News understands the text of the note may not be made public until the end of next week. The premier s note, when it goes forward, will be more conciliatory then the original draft. Members of the cabinet attach great Importance to the wording of the doett ment in view of De Valera's meticulous phraseology regarding Sinn Fein’s attitude on a republic for Ireland. “There are good reasons for stating that the proposal for a dual monarchy, with a king for Ireland, is not satisfactory to a majority of tha members of the cabinet," telegraphed the Gairloch correspondent of the Dally News. "Premier Lloyd George Uatly is opposed to it.’’ The apparent optimism at Gairloch and In certain circles in Loudon was in decided contrast with gloomy and pessimistic reports received from Dublin. These advices to the Irish office painted the situation in the blackest possible colors, saying there was a feeling of keen tensity on both sides. British officials In Ireland were quote 1 as saying they would not take the initiative In fresh hostilities, but were pro pared to tight to the last if warfare were resumed. BELFAST UNDER MARTIAL RULE BELFAST, Serf. 27. —This city was under virtual martial law today, with Lite riot act in effect, and was comparatively 'peaceful. Two men were wounded slightly by fusillades during the night. Two house* were attacked and the furniture was re moved to the meet and burned. Military authorities have issued a proelamation forbidding three or more persons to assemble ia the streets after S:3O at night. The riot zone—in which five men were killed slid sixty wounded Sunday and Sunday t ight—was under military patrol throughout the night and today the streets were filled with armored cars, carrying machine guts, which passed slowly back and forth between the battle wrecked houses Motor trucks with sra rchlights were stationed in the "riot zone” during the night and the lights were kept playing oa the housetops to preveut sniping. GUN RUNNING CASE UP TOD A Y NEW YORK. Sept. 27.—George Gordon Rorke, 29, of Washington, was to !>e arraigned before United Stat>-s Commissioner Hitchcock today oa a charge of conspiring to ship arms into Ireland, which would be agair.st the pey-e of Great Britain and a violation of United States Federal laws. It is charged Rorke was one of four who arranged the shipment of riot guns to Ireland aboard the steamship East Side June 12, last- Customs officers found 4% riot gun* in the hold of this ship and parts of one hundred additional guns, each capable of firing six hundred shots a minute. The guns were valut-a at $135,000. Two Arrested in Raid on Rooming House In a raid on a rooming house at 37 North East street early today the police arrested Ed Oliier, 2S, of Muncie on the charges of vagrancy, contributing to the neglect of a child and statutory charges. Lillian Denison, 36, was also arrested on charges of child neglect and a statutory charge. The police say the woman's two children were at the rooming house. TWO ARRESTED AFTER RIOT. J. O. Pantzer 1601 South East street, and Patton Hensley, 1209 Bedford street, were arrested by O. H. Rodger# aud a squad of deputies of Beech Grove last night. The men are alleged to have taken part in a near riot and fight at Beech Grove Sunday during a baseball game.
