APPEAL MADE TO FACTORIES FOR SHOW BACKING Manufacturers Hope Presence of Purchasing Agents Will Bring Business to City. An urgent appeal has been Issued by .V. J. Allen, secretary of the Associated Employers of Indianapolis, to Indianapolis manufacturers, to get behind the Indianapolis Industrial Exposition, to be held under the auspices of the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce, In the Manufacturers building, at the State fairground. Oct. 10 to 15. In Mr. Allen's letter he sa.- “It will he an Impressive sight to see ••-dustrlal Indianapolis Cnder One Roof ' It also will stimnlate Industrial activities here liecause of the fact that during that week the convention of the National Purchasing Agents’ Association will be held in Indianapolis.” Purchasing agents, according to Mr Allen's statement, represent at least half the corporate buying power of the con tinent. Mr. Allen emphasizes the fact that the Industrial exposition is a civic movement and not a money making scheme. NOT MONEY MAKING SCHEME. “Some manufacturers have the impression that the industrial exposition will make a lot of money for someone.” he said. “This impression has undoubtedly gain'd credence because of the financial success of the Chamber of Commerce Chicago. This is not and cannot he the case with the Indianapolis Industrial Exposition. “The Chamber of Commerce Is charging but SOO and giving with It SSO worth of tickets for the same size space that the Pageant of Progress charged SSOO. Just as much money as possible will be spent by the chamber in Us promotional campaign to bring into Indianapolis buyers from all over the conntry. If after the exposition Is over, any money is left In that fund, the chamber has obligated Itself to return this money pro-rata to the exhibitors. “The increased selling organization started out Monday by Claude S. Wallin, the director of the exposition, Is getting real results. Mr. Wallin expects to cleau up the remaining exhibit space by the end of next week.” Following arc the exhibitors whose contracts wore cleared through the director's office yesterday; Indiana Concrete Tile and Roofing Company, A. DOUBLE TAX DUE OWING TO DEATHS ON THE SAME DAY Inheritance Law Touches Estate Held Only Few Hours by Sister. The death of Mary Irene Griffith a few hours after the death of her sister, Anna J. Griffith, north of Southport. Sept. 4. 1920. has resulted in a peculiar Inheritance tax problem for William T. Rasmussen, inheritance tax appraiser for Marion County. , Anna Griffith died at 2 a. m. and at 10 p. m. of the same day her sister, Mary Irene, died. Anna left an estate valued at $90,919.00, of which $53,157.39 is personal and $37,701.07 is real estate. Following the death of her sister, Mary Irene Griffith was an heir to part of Anna's estate. Mary Irene’s estate is valued at $101,510.34. of whtch $59,202.34 ia personal and $45,314 is real estate. Mr. Rasmussen has fixed the inheritance tax of Anna's estate at $1,200.36, and Mary Irene's at $1,417.02. “This is a question of double taxation because the estate of Mary Irene Griffith is assessed a tax as an heir of Anna’s estate and in turn Mary Irene's estate is taxed cn a total valuation which includes her share of Anna’s estate,” Mr. Rasmussen explained. The estates of the two sisters total $195,435.40 and the total tax has been fixed at $2,025.38. The dlflerence of a few hours in the deaths of the two sisters causes the estates to be handled separately by the appraiser. As an heir of her sister Irene, while living, was legally responsible for her share of the Inheritance tax, although she never actually received the Inheritance. U. S. SHIPPING BOARD CHANGES Operates Ships Under New Method Designed to Reduce Operating Expense. Special to Indiana Dally Times and Philadelphia Public Ledger. WASHINGTON, Aug. 19.—With the approval of President Harding, the shipping board has taken steps to bring about a radical change in the method of operating Its ships, designed to reduce or eliminate the present operating deficit. The board proposes to substitute the bare boat eharter method for the existing plan of turning the ships over to operators on the basis of a 5 per cent gross receipts return to the Government, the shipping board paying the operating expenses. The board authorized the operating vice presidents of the organization, to make a thirty-day study of the situation with the view to such a change and report to the board. The bare boat eharter plan, which means the shipping board will lease a vessel outright to an operator on a semiannual or annual basis and assume no responsibility for her upkeep and operation, baR been under consideration by the present board for several months. It was considered favorably by the former Administration and would have been put Into effect, but for the slump in ocean traffic. When ocean freight rates were lv cli during and shortly after the war. the board made money on tho percentage basis and its operating ssurplus was turned to. construction account, leaving nothing to meet: operating costs when tintraffic slump set In.—Cpyright, •’? Public Ledger Cos. Captain English to Discuss Amendments Capt. William E. English, author of a number of the proposed amendments to the constitution of Indiana, which will be voted on next month, will discuss the amendments at the regular bi-monthly meeting of the Indianapolis Junior Chamber of Commerce this evening. The meeting will follow the membership dinner which will be served in the dining room of the Chamber of Commerce at 6 o'clock. The time of the dinner has been changed from 6:30 to 6 o'clock in order that the meeting may be concluded earlier. WHO istGETTING ITT SYDNEY, Aug. 19.
