LIQUOR TO BE POURED FROM CANADIAN SIDE Ontario Court Ruling Permits Shipment of Intoxicants to U. S. SPEEDBOATS CARRIERS WINDSOR, Ontario, Ang. 12.—Canadian prohibition officials expact lienor ■will pour across the border into the United States in greater streams than ever before because of the court ruling here that the Ontario temperance act does not prohibit exportation of intoxicants to a foreign country. Disagreeing with American custom officials, who stated today In Detroit that they did not look for increased rum-running, Canadians said that orders from tho United States already were reaching breweries la this district end that owners of these plants said they would fill the orders. Reports were current that, before the end of the week, more than a score of Speed boats would be crossing the lake With llnnor. CANNOT RKFUSE CLEARANCE PAPERS. A. T. Contreuil, collector of customs, ■fid thf t under the law he was powerless refue clearance papers for shipment* Intended for the United States, and that he would issue such papers, even for the smallest craft. The police professed themselves to be unable to interfere with the liquor traffic. Inspector Mousseau said he was not taking any steps to appeal yesterday’s decision, but that the < a=e would be referred to Toronto authorities, and that any action would have to come from there.

FLAN FOR CHECK ON AMERICAN SIDE DETROIT, Mich., Aug. 12.— Detroit Is preparing to equip Canada’s rum barrel with a cork, following announcement Thursday that the bung had been kicked out by Canadian customs officals. The" Canadian authorities yesterday granted clearance papers for a consignment of 9 per cent beer, intended for Detroit, but American customs officials are expected to check any trickle of liquor which may head this way. The situation grew out of the seizure by Canadian officers last week of 100 cases of beer consigned to Michigan. The beer was seized at Sandwich and the case was taken before Police Magistrate Gundy, of Windsor, who ordered the liquor to be restored to the shippers, British-American Brewing Company of Windsor. EXPLN.VTION OF CANADIAN LAW. , , _ Then following an explanation of C anadian law on that subject, it was ruled that liquor could be shipped from the province of Ontario into the other pr vlnces and to other countries, regard.ess of their dryness. The clearance of beer consigned to Detroit is the result o this decision. . , Canadian customs officials declare that •the law is the law and they hare nothing to do with American lews This statement is rather perplexing to American customs officers who maintain that through th“ Canadian customs officer* did clear liquor consigned to the United State*, a tip would be passed over to the American side and a seizure of the shipment could be effected. The belief also was expressed by I H. Polozker, assistant Federal district attorney, that Canadian liquor concerns would be not become involved In such traffic regardless of the Canadian law. However, the Canadian brewing concerns, with the exception of one, do not seem to be of the same opinion. DEALERS HOLD SHIPMENT LEGAL. E. ,L. Lad ore. assistant secretary and treasurer of Hiram Walker & Son3, Ltd., Walkerville, Ontario, said: “Though it is legal to ship liquor into the United Stafes, our firm will not do so unless the American purchaser has both a State and Federal permit for same.” An official of the British-American Brewing Company said: “It is legal the way we now are doing it” 8. A. Griggs, president of the Walkervllle Frewlng Company, said: “We will deliver liquor consigned to the United States to the Canadian docks and then wash our hands of the whole affair.” The whole question as to how the liquor will be delivered into the United States depends entirely upon the bootlegger and “runner.” A rowboat will be recognized as a carrier by the Canadian customs officials as quick as a steamer, it was stated by Canadian officials. Once the liquor is cleared and placed aboard a boat the Canadian officers are through with it. If an attempt is made to land it again on Canadian shores the liqnor is subject to confiscation. It is confronted with the same situation if an attempt Is made to land It on the American side.
