MURDER LAID TO FINDER OF PRIEST’S BODY William Hightower, Strange Character, Suspected of Unusual Killing. SAX FRANCISCO. Ang. 12— A formal charge of murder was to bo lodged today sgalnft William Hightower, finder of tbo body of Father Patrick K. Heslln, mlsslrig Colma priest. This announcement was made by J. Franklin Swart, district attorney of San Mateo County, after he tad carefully analyzed the n**t of eireutnatantlal evidence which the San Francisco police department baa drawn about the suspect since he disclosed the hiding place of the bullet riddled body of the priest in its lonely Saiada Beach grave. SUSPECT HEAVILY GUARDED. Hightower, after a day's strenuous questioning was permitted to rest last night. He was held at the hall of justice around which an extra guard was thrown. Throughout the night detectives worked checking up the various statements made by Hightower It is maintained three glaring inconsistencies have been found. Aside from his own admissions, which detectives sty have been of a damaging character, police placed moat importance in three developments in their search for evidence. They were: 1. Discovery that Hightower rented an automobile on the evening that the priest was kidnaped of a make of machine similar to one used by abductors. He took the car from a garage at <5 p. m. and did not return it until 1 a. in.. Ang. 3. 2. Discovery that Hightower had rented a typewriter which has been recovered and whose type faces bear startling resemblances to those employed to type the ransom letter first received. FIND INFERNAL MACHINE. 3. Discovery in Hightower's room of an infernal machine which he calls a “compound machine gun” which he admits having taken to the beach near where the body waa found. Police recalled two threats in the ransom note. One warned that an infernal machine would destroy any one entering the hiding place of the priest. The other warned that hand grenades would be ready if police accompanied the carrier of the ransom. "Today police made an intensive search for "the foreigner” believed to hare been Hightower's accomplice. He, the police believe. Is the man who called at the flolma Parish bouse and persuaded Father Heslln to go on the errand of mercy which ended In deoth. LONDON, Aug. 12.—A cabinet meeting has been summoned for 11 o’clock tomorrow morning to consider the Sinn Fein reply to the English peace offer. Premier Lloyd George will reach London at Id o’clock tonight from Paris. NO GENERAL I AMNESTY ASKED. Art O’Brien, head of the Irish Selfdetermination League and so-called Sinn Fein ambassador to Loudon, formally denied reports current here that Kamonn De Valera's reply Includes a demand for amnesty. The irlsh office states there are about 7,000 Sinn Felners imprisoned, or interned. The government haa taken no action regarding their release. The communication, so far as could be learned here, does not request the release of all Sinn Felners now detained in prison or detention camps. ROADS APPEAL TO REINSTATE PIECE SYSTEM Declare Repair Work Must Be Done Outside Own Shops Under Hour Plan. CHICAGO, Aug. 12.—Eastern railroads today appealed to the United States Railroad Labor Board to reinstate the old piece-work system of wage computation.
