A purse-snatcher who did not hesitate to shoot at his pursuers made an un- j successful attempt to rob a woman last night. Josephine Carson, Degress, 205*5 Boulevard Tlace, was walking on Eigh teenth street near Capitol avenue at 8 o'clock when a man stepped from behind a telephone pole and seized lier purse. She screamed and the thief started to run south through an alley. The woman followed him and he turned and fired one shot at her from a revolver. The bullet missed her. Sergeant Sheehan and the emergency squad searched for the thief. They found the purse in the alley. It had not been opened. Burglars broke Into the garage of Frank Albright. 3117 Bellefontaine street, last night. Two automobile tires valued at SSO are missing. Henry Kunkel, 514 South East street told the police today that he dropped his purse containing $164 while walking on East street near Virginia avenue. He said four men were walking near him and that be believes one of them picked Vsp his pooketbook. Joseph Johnson, IS. 251S Sherman ave nue. was arrested by Detectives Reilly and Fields last night on the charge of burglary. The police allege he broke ginto W. W. Meadow's grocery, 3720 East Twenty-Fifth street. Johnson Is said to have admitted entering the store and to have declared he was hungry and just took something to eat.

OBTAINS NEW HEADQUARTERS Hoosier Square and Compass Club Leases Rooms. The Hoosier Square and Compass Club has leased the second and third floors of the Sbaw-Walker building, 43 and *.*> South Meridian street* with a floor space of about 12.000 square feet. Partitions, railings, fixtures and all necessary equipment will be put in place at once, with a view to opening the club's new headquarters to the membership Saturday noon, Aug. 27. The rooms will be equipped with all modern club features. Including study rooms, pool, billiard, card, chess and checker tables, and cigar and candy stand and a soda fountain. Beech Grove Gets Catholic School Plans have teen approved and ground will be broken Aug. 16 for anew Catholic school In Beech Grove, to be built by the Holy Name Church of Beech Grove. The building, which will serve as a school and church unt.l anew church Is built, will be 65x100 feet and will consist of a basement and two stories'. It will be of brick and concrete. The first fioor will be occupied by an auditorium with a capacity of 450 persons, and provision will be made for the addition of a wing ou each side of the building. Requests Pour in for Exhibit Space A record was set Thursday in contracts made for space for the Indianapolis Exposition to be held under auspice* cf the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce at the State fairground, Oct. 10 to 15, when twelve Indianapolis concerns arranged for space. The largest space was taken by the Xordyke & Marin on Company, which has contracted for one thousand square feet to be uaed both by their milling machinery factory and the automobile division. CAPTAIN SCOTT DIES OF STROKE Civil War Veteran Passes Away in Garfield Park— Active in Politics. Cap. Alexander M. Scott, 85, recorder of the Indiana commandery of the Loyal Legion, and' a member of the board of trustees of the Soldiers' and Sailors’ Orphans’ Home at Knightstown, dropped dead nt Garfield Park Thursday afternoon following a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Scott was attending a reunion of the Indiana Tourists' Association of St. Petersburg. Fla., when stricken. Captain Scott, who was an active member of the George H. Thomas poet, O. A R.. In Indianapolis, was 111 several weeks ago, and apparently had recovered. He attended a meeting of the trustees of the orphans’ home Tuesday, and it is thought the strain brought on the final stroke. Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon, front the residence, 3422 Kenwood. Interment will be at Sunday morning at 11 o'clock. Captain Scott was born at Portland Mills, Putnam County, March 23, 1836. He served In the Civil War until April. 1564, when he was forced to return home because of illness. He engaged in the dry goods and banking business in Ladoga. residing there until 1006, when he moved to Indianapolis. He was active In Republican politics, serving five terms In the Indiana Legislature. He was a member of the I.oyni Legion, G. A. R. Ladoga lodge F. and A. M.. Crawfordsville commandery. Knights Templar, Knights of Pythias, and Order of BenHur. He was an elder in Grace Presbyterian Church in Indianapoli^. Surviving besides the widow, Mrs. Margaret Brown Scott, are five children. R.
