Mike Gibbons Bids for Chance to Grab Disputed Ring Title *Phantomf Displays Old Cleverness Against Ratner—Challenges Wilson, Downey. By JACK YEIOCK, International News Sports Editor. NEW YORK, Aus. s.—Mike Gibbons, the' St. Paul ghost, is ready to take bis coreted crack at the middleweight championship of the world. He Is out with a challenge to Johnny Wilson, Bryan Downey or any boxer who can make tho middleweight limit and he confidently expects to annex the ittle before his whirlwind campaign is finished. In ten rounds, with the rugged and ■willing Angie Ratner, Gibbons last night demonstrated that he has made a marvelous comeback. He was the winner by such a wide margin that Ratner was practically left at the post. And Rafner is no slouch of a boxer or puncher by any means. Gibbons went around his man like a cooper around a keg. Much of the speed and cleverness that won him a reputation as one of the greatest boxers of the age cropped out against Ratner, though the veteran Mike did not. have to extend himself to win. Mike has fought his wav back to form in actual ring contests. When he determined to stage a come-back a few months ago he made np his mind that he would not expend energy In the gymnasium that might be used In winning battl°. and once he got his wind and weight right, he started his campaign. Since then he has been mowing down opponents with clock-like regularity. Tonight, in Boston, Gibbons will take on Ous Platts, the European welgbt champion. In a ten round bout. On next Tuesday night he is scheduled to meet Jeff Smith, the Bayonne boy, in a twelve rounder at Jersey City and on Ang. 28 he will trek down to N'ew Orleans to take on Happy Littleton in a Cfteen-ronnd bout. Last night’s card at the Dyckmen Oval also brought together Gene Tunney and Martin Burke Tunney won the Judges' decision after ten rounds of milling, during which neither fighter showed enough real form to give them a claim to class as heavyweight contenders. Champion Jack Dempsey could have whipped the pair In short order. Slippery Elm, Irish Kiss and Other Turf Stars Seized by Fed Agents BUFFALO, X.
