TRAFFIC SQUAD GROWING FAST Increased Funds to Be Asked to Operate Division. . Increased funds for the operation of th* traffic division of the police department next year Trill be asked of the city council ly the board of public safety when It submits its budget for 1922, George W. Williams, executive secretary, announced today. The traffic division had $3,627.50 to spend upon materials, such as paint for aone lines, street markets, silent policemen, etc., this year, and is asking for $5,000 for 1922. The department plans to augment the traffic force, it being expected that the rapidly Increasing downtown motor travel will necessitate the location of policemen at several new corners. An Ingenious expedient for hurrying s tute-patchlng Job to completion is this: Have two small s abs of wood, apply the patch to the tube, then place the Job between tbe two blocks of wood. Next place the Jack on the upper block, slip the whole under the axle or frame of the machine and raise It so that the car Is lifted an Inch or so. This brings several hundred pounds of pressure on the patch and materially hastens the completion of the repair. Parking Car at Curb Go°d Trick to Know Tn parking a car at a crowded curb where there is Just s little more than th length of the car available It is difficult to put the car in place unless special care Is observed. The easiest method is to drive np alongside the car ahead, then backcutting the wheels sharply so as to swing the rear end In. When the rear end is well Into the opening the wheels should be gradually cut In the other direction so that as the car moves 6iowly back tbe front end will move over toward the curb. Increased Demand Shown for Cars Evidence of a steady upward trend In automobile demand, influenced In great measure by price cuts. Is shown by Increased production for June from the Michigan factories. The output of these factories during this month totalled 169.041. an increase of 24,440 compared with May. There was a step up In nearly all factories particularly Ford. Dodge and Rulck. Increases tn tbe output of Hud-son-Essex, Maxwell, Paige, Packard. Studebakcr, Chevrolet, Kupp or.d Olds also were marked. Olds turned out 3,100 cars in June as against 1.775 tn May. Why Not Try This in Indianapolis? Each applicant for a driver's license in Spain must get a certificate of good conduct from his mayor.’ He must be able to read and write. His hearing, eyesight and general health must oe good, and he must show the government inspector that he can drive. In Japan, the new tax rates on automobiles, which represent an Increase of from 50 to 80 per cent, are so high that they are not only interferring seriously with any Increase In the number of motor vehicles used, but are actually retlrlug/from use a large number of such vehicles. CRANKING AND ACCIDENTS. Cranking Is the cause of 29.6 per cent of automobile accidents and collisions cause 1922 pnr cent. Skidding and ditching cause 12.7 per cent of accidents and 10.6 per cent are caused by carelessness in entering and leaving cars. WHAT ROADS ARE. More than 42 per cent of the surfaced roads in the United States are gravel; 25.22 per cent are sand clap; 10.98 per cent are asphalt and other bituminous materials; 391 per cent are concrete, and .62 per cent are brick. GLCE CAR OF FI'TIRE. According to Roger W. Batson, a statistician in Chicago, automobiles of the future will he built of a composition of cotton, formaldehyde and glue. This composition, it was explained, may solve the problem of lighter cars. COST IN BOSTON. The city of Boston spent $209,000 for automobile service last year, exclusive of the fire, police and hospital departments.

BALKY MOTORS LEAD TO MANY THEFT REPORTS Rain Storm Causes Owners to Abandon Cars and Cops Get Work-out. Discovery of supposedly stolen automobiles turned out to be tbe most popular outdoor sport In Indianapolis yesterday, and all daj long police beadquar ters and traffic policemen were besieged by persons of good intentions telling them of strange automobiles that bad oeen standing in the some position ever since the night before. The police investigated each case carefully, for it is a common thing to recover stolen automobiles under such circumstances after the thief has deserted the car when it refused to run or when he believed himself followed, but in not a single instance was a machine found to be stolen. The trouble all went back to the big thunderstorm of Monday, when dozens of motors refused to ‘mote’* after the storm had passed. Water in the carburetor. wet coils, water on magneto points and short circuits in all kinds of mysterious places were responsible. Asa result, car owners, after struggling heroically and in many insti nces profanely, with the balky motors for an hour or so, had given up in disgust and had gone on home, hoping that wi h daylight and dry weather the balky engines might be induced to start. “Limit-Day Specials” So Called, Because the Limit in Value-Giving Has Been Reached
THURSDAY has been designated as LIMIT DAY in the Mill-End Sale because these special numbers approximate the limit in value-giving and because the savings are so extreme that we have to limit the number sold to a customer to prevent the goods falling into the hands of dealers, as, in most cases, our retail price is considerably under the average wholesale, cost. We suggest also that quantities in some cases are also limited and that prompt action will be necessary to prevent disappointment.
