CRUDE OIL BEST TO KILL CHINCH BUGS OFF FARMS State Expert Demonstrates Use in Localities Where Insect Ravaged Crops. Crude oU Is an effective control or devastating chinch bugs now prevalent In nun/ counties of this State, Frank jf. Wallace, State entomologist under the department of conservation, demonstarted to farmers in Madison, Marion, Shelby and Bartholomew Counties In the last few days. Fuel oil, road oil or any cheap oil with a heavy bady also makes an lmpossablS barrier when used with straw, he says. In localities visited the State entomologist found bugs had penetrated in a few instances ns far as thirty rows. The general rule showed a penetration of teu to twenty rows. In demonstrating that crude oil and straw wIH check .the advance of this voracious pest, "Wallace surrounded badly Infested corn stalks with a barrter of straw four inches wide and two Inches high. This was soaked with oil. Barriers should be replenished with oil every four or five days and maintained until the pest Is eliminated. Maay farmers entertain the mistaken idea that chinch bugs reproduce over night. This la not Wallace says. There are but two broods each season. The present one hatched In the wheat and the serond generation due in about a month, will hatch In the corn If not prevented. It Is this last brood—the Young ones—that do the most damsge he says. The straw and oil barrier should be laid a few rows ahead of the most badly infested area of the corn' field. Post holes should be drilled a distance of each fifty feet within the harrier. As the bugs chew ttieir way through the com and reach the barrier impassable, they will travel parallel with it. In an effort to escape they will crowd into the post holes by the millions and can then bo easily eradicated by pouring oil In on them. While creosote is an effective harrier checking the advance of chinch bugs, there is little In the State and the nearest •hipping point is Chicago. The cost Is considerably more than the cheaper heavy oils and the delay In getting It here will resnlt in much loss to crops Wallace believes. Therefore the heavy oil and straw barrier, proved to do the work, is being advised for use by the State official. Says Old England Fast Disappearing BOSTON, Aug. 2.- Women's presentday dress and bootlegging are blamed for the Increase in crime in this State by Chairman Frann A. Brooks, of the board of parole. “Bootlegging and women's present day dress, which turns our streets into burlesque stages, are the principal causes for this increase." said Dr. Brooks. “Marriage has become a joke. Young men steal to gratify the-craving for luxury of modern women. Discipline bas broken down. The old New England home Is fast disappearing.”

SVENGALI’S HYPNOTIC POWER CAUSES YURKA To Sing ‘Ben Bole in Big Scene of UuMaurier’s ‘Trilby’'
By WALTER D. HICKMAN. “Ben Bolt” and the hypnotic power of Svengali go hand In hand during the big scene* of George PuMaurier's “Trilby." When George Somnes aa Svengali shook his trembling hand at Blanche Turks on the-Mb rat stage last night and commanded her to slug “Bon Bolt," everyone wbo waded through the flood last night wished that Somnes would command the rain to cease. So masterful was Mr. Somnes in the hypnotic scenes of the play that it was evident if the weather man was about be’ would have yielded to the command of Mr. Somnes. This play is a creepy thing-and Svengali Is the sort of a creature one would not want to meet on a dark street and 2 a. m. “Trilby” is a fine bag of theatrical tricks. The scenes are so intense that one' is robbed of bis thinking cap and before you know It, you are under the spell of Svengali Just as Trilby is In the play. Although Mr. Somnes’ reminds m, of one of the famous Smith brothers in appearance. the similarity stops there. The Smiths cause one to stop coughing aud Svengali causes Trilby to sing. Seriously speaking, George Nrmnes never in* been to better advan tage than as the wicked Svengali. This actor makes the cold chills piny a Jazz tune right up your spinal cord. Some of the scenes are so intense that one for gers he is actually In a theater being fooled by a master magician. I.ct us stop and consider who Is responsible for the present success Os •Trilby'’ at the Murat. His name Is Stuart Walker. In the first place Mr Walker has done his best casting In "Trilby” by assigning Mr. Soinnes to the Svengali role. Miss Blanche Turks to the Trilty part, Elizabeth Patterson to the part of Mrae. Vinard and M alter Vunneguf as Gecko. It Is easy to use words and more words, but the fact remains that "Trilby'' Is one of the most difficult plays to cast. It is essential that the four parts named above be care fully cast. Mr. Walker has been more thaa careful in casting this pta.v -he has been wonderful. Mr. Walker has done much better In casting “Trilby” than he did “Monna Vanna.” His "Book of Job" held the highest in tny Hall of Fame until "Trilby” came to life Inst night. The cast of "Trilby” reminds one of a telephone directory, so long It is. Every member of the Walker company, with the exception of Mr. Walker, is employed this week. In cdi ition to those specifically named. the cast includes McKay Morris. Aldrich Bowker, Tom Powers, Robert McGroarry, Oscar Davisson. Edwin Noel. Philip Hllgery, Waite’ I’oulter, James P. Webber. Judith 1,0- t -ry, Grace Ktechle, Helen Burch and Lucille Nikolas. From a production standpoint. “Trilby” Is “pie” for Mr. .Walker because It contains a stndio scene. When It comes to mixing color, piano, rugs, a fire place, logs, a table, chairs, paintings and the like for the purpose of creating a stu dio, Mr. Walker is at home. He eon Wend the wildest colors Into a peaceful R-enc, causing the colors to behave. The waiting room at the concert ball ga’-e one the right impressten and aided the company In making the third act of this play the best done act so far this season at the Murat.

MR. EDWIN NOEL. Among the many who are appearing this week in “Trilby” at the Murat is Mr. Edwin Noel, who recently was seen on Broadway In ‘ Deburau.” This week he is as Anthony. Those who see "Trilby” this week’probably will remember the work of George Sknnnes as the outstanding feature of the offering. He actually thrilled me lust night and it is seldom that I have a fhrttl. Somnes by his magnetic work and his pearance made me forget that I whs wet as the resnlt of my swim to the Murat hist night. I fell a v'etim to his worth as an actor and the result is 1 do not hesl tate In saying that It Is the most coin manding Individual performance of the season. I had no doubt bnt that Miss Ynrka would be at her best as Trilby. It s a grand and glorious part for her. She was epleudid every minute of the play but she was magnificent during the death scene, “Trilby" Is the dramatic thunderbolt of the season. It will give yon a creepy feeding but remember that It is only a play.

' Do not miss "Trilby" if you long for the dramatic shock of your life. At the Murat all week. TWO DOGS TAKE THE CAKE AT THE LTRIC. • Sometimes a dog act comes along that is so different from the rest that It Is the commanding spot on the bill. This is true this week at the Lyric where a man and two dogs appear under tbo hilling, "Just Friends." The name of the trainer Is not given, bat it Is seldom that a man can “humanize" two dogs as this man has done. The two dogs in tho act appear to have more than loyulty for their master, they seem to express love for him. One of the dogs Is nearly a comedian. He wavs bis tail with so much energy that the house Is roaring with laughter. Ihe high Jumping dog is also well (rained. The outstanding feature of the act Is the complete understanding on the purt of the dogs of what should be done to jtlease tho audience. That act is so natural that one can not help wishing that vaudeville hud some more acts of this type. The Four ITtirmnny Girls are singers of only average ability. Their encore number Is the best. Wells and IMck have some comedy chatter which they present under the head of “At the Pay Statldu. " The girt in this act rather reminds one of Florence Moore Harry Gilbert sings a number of character songs, gome old and others aged. Grazer ant! lutwler have a singing and ianctng act which radiates class and individuality. Their dancing numbers are way above the average seen In popular vaudeville. The bill closes with an aerohaUc offering presented by raster, Bell and Griffin. The bill Includes Howe and Howe and the Singer Midgets In a movie called “The Singer Midgets Scandal ” At the Lyric all week. -I- -I- -I----OX THE MOVIE SCREEN.
