TO EXPLORE FOR BLUE GOOSE EGGS Species Are Prized and Eagerly Sought. ON, July 23.—A hunt for the egg of the blue (uum wUI be one of the old arands of the Donald B. McMillan expedition to Baffin Land this year, If the hopes of ornithologists are realised. The adult blue goose, a variety with a grayish brown body that gets its name from the blue-gray of Us wing coverts, is not uncommon in the United States, but its breeding haunts have been a subject of much speculation among bird lovers and ita nest and eggs have never been observed. An announcement by Dr. McMillan that on his last trip to the Arctic be had noticed fledglings of these geese aroused the Interest of students of bird life, with the result that one of the scientists who will accompany the present expedition will be commissioned to be on the lookout especially for blue goose eggs in connection with his other field work. The price that one of these eggs, hitherto unseen by civilized man. would command has not been quoted, but. Judging from the enthusiasm displayed In natural mlstory societies over the subject. the goose that laid the gulden egg will have nothing on this bird. Baffin Land is believed to be the greatest breeding place of bird life In the Far North. In its 150,000 square miles of interior unexplored by white jinen are lakes which the Esquimaus describe as six days' sledge Journey in length (at least 100 miles). and abounding in wild fowl. The McMillan expedition will leave this month in the schooner Bowdoin. specially built for the purpose, and will spend probably fourteen months in a •ii.tit <>! Dunwoody, chemist for the city health department. Dunwoody is the man who tells the police whether it is or tarn when a bootlegging haul is made. The alcoholic content of raspberry mule is the chemist's chief concern in life in these days of pure milk and water. Materials used in the kitchen concoction of intoxicants vary with, the seasons. Dun woody’s records show. Just now rapsberries and peaches furnish the kick. Dandelion days are gone, but the luclous era of the grape soon will be here, Dun'woody says. Most of the home brew beer which comes to the chemist for analysis is heavy stuff. A bottle analyzed a few days ago registering 6 per cent alcohol. The prohibit on violators never have been able to discover the secret of making strong wine, the samples sent to Dunwoody show. In the old days real wine contained a 20 per cent wallop, bur It seldom gets beyond 10 per cent these days. The illegal manufacture of high-proof whisky has become quite general, the chemist says.
