COUNCIL HOLDS PLAZA HEARING WITHIN A WEEK Attempt Will Be Made to Show’ Many Signatures Are Fraudulent. The real campaign over the proposal to create a war memorial plaza in Indianapolis in connection with the State war memorial is expected to open next Wednesday afternoon when the council committee holds a public hearing on the petition asking for a referendum on the project. Both sides of the controversy, which already is waxing warm, are preparing to enter the hearing to present arguments in behalf of their cause. An attempt is expected to be made by the city administration forces to show that a number of signatures on the petition are fraudu- , lent, and it is expected that a demand i will be made that they be stricken from the papers. The pro-plaza forces will not oppose the elimination of proven spurious signatures, it is said, because they are confident that there are more than enough [ signers to make it mandatory upon the council to call the special election. "We anticipate assaults, on our petition from a variety of angles,” said Mr. Miller. “Plenty of evidence that the strong-headed Utile group of plaza proponents will go to any lengths of trickery and deception has been observed. For instance, the Indianapolis News Is unable to distinguish the plaza proposal . from the State war memorial plan. “A great hue and cry has been raised ! over the alleged discovery of a few names on the petition whose owners deny sign- 1 ing. Any sensible persou can readily ' see that such a document could not be j prepared without some Imperfections. In ! many cases petitions were left In public places to be signed. Jokers and malicious persons no doubt prpetrated some mischief. The point Is that the petition not j only contains the required number of names, but nearly G.OOO names surplus— 1 about 40 per cent more than are needed."
