The law was well observed." Mr. Mannfeld answers theifharge of a i few dissatisfied and misguided persons that’ the new law was responsible for the death of some fish caught on a khoelt and cast back, with the statement ■that practically all of the 400 parent fish Bn Riverside Park State Hatchery are Fhook and line bass. He cites facts to Khow exceedingly few fish caught with a Bok die if properly handled, and bland* false the charge this law is not giod because fish thus caught and returned to the water die. This argument, belsays, is advanced by persons who wish nai closed season at spawning time and who desire to repeal the law at the next Legislature. With the exception of two, each of the 120 organised protective clubs inf Indiana favor the closed season law, hel says. rWhat the closed season has done for the black bass and blue gills may well be done for other desirable species, for to increase the supply we must see that they reproduce naturally and nre unmolested. The principal. Is right and we would do well to follow It and make It the basis of real fish protection." Relative to the abundance of quail Mr. Mannfeld says: "Nearly everywhere one may hear the whistle of Bob-White. It is safe to say there are more quail In Indiana today than for twenty years. 1 The department is in receipt of a letter from T. Gilbert Pearson, president of the National Association of Audubon Societies in which he states that a proposed law placing quail on the song bird list, or fca other words giving It a perpetual * closed season, Is likely to defeat the very objbet of such a bill. According to Mr. Pearson the people who have taken the most interest in this bird are organixed sportsmen. "My experience," he says "has been that in most instances the fortunes of the quail may with a fair degree of safety be left in the hands of game protective associations who have Intense personal interest in the preservation of this species.” LETTUCB AND TOMATO SALAD. CARNEGIE DIDN’T GIVE FORTUNE Appraiser's Report Shows He Failed by $22,151,011. NEW YORK. July I.—A report lust issued by the State controller’s office showed that the estate of Andrew Carnegie has a gross appraisal value of $25,933.014 and a net value of $22 151,011. This report shows how the famous ironmaster failed in his oft-expressed wish to die poor. The fortune left, was, however, only a remnant of what tbs Scotch emigrant boy laid up during his lifetime in America. Constant gifts to colleges, for libraries. to pension funds, and to hero funds and other benefactions raised the total which Mr. Carnegie gave away during his lifetime to more than $330,000,000. Mr. Carnegie died Aug 11, 1919. near Lennoi:, Moss. A list of his gifts to the world was issued at the time of his death. It showed that gifts and grants made by Mr, Carneg*e and the Carnegie Foundation of New York up to June 1, 1918, aggregated $350,695,653. The bulk of the amount, or 5255.743.360. represented gifts within the United States. No gifts and donations made since June 1. 1918, were embraced in the computa tion. but it was explained that there had bene few of them.
