FIRE LOSS SOUTH OF TOWN SIO,OOO University Heights Residence and Bakery Burn. Fire of undetermined origin destroyed a two and a half story frame residence and bakery belonging to Adolph Shaffer, at University heights a mile and a half south of the city limits on the Madison road at 3:30 o'clock this morning. For a time it appeared as if seven or eight homes would be destroyed. Shaffer had a narrow escape after awakening his fam ily and getting them safely out of the burning building. The loss is estimated at SIO,OOO and is said to be partly covered by insurance. Bucket brigades formed by neighbors and by students from the Indiana Central University prevented the spread of the flames to other houses with the exception of the residence of Ben Dummlnn to the south of Shaffer's property. That house was badly scorched by the heat. Shaffer's property is a total loss and almost nothing was saved from the building. The residence of it. L. Fisher, directly across the street, caught tiro several times, but was extinguished without much damage. Kire apparatus from Indianapolis was sent and thirty-eight gallons of chemical poured on the ruins of the Shaffer building. City water mains do not extend that far south. Mr. Shaffer went to his bakery at 3 o'clock and smelled something burning He went up stairs and awakened his wife and two sons, Carl. 19, and Vincent, 6. They went down stairs, but Shaffer remained on the second floor. Suddenly the Games broke through and spread so rapidly his escape by the front stairway was cut off. He escaped by elimhing over a rear roof and dropping to the ground.

SONS VETERANS RECRUITING FAST If Grandsire Fought War of States, You Can Join. | “Are you eligible to membership in the Sons of Veterans?” This question is being plumped at hundreds of Indianapolis citizens by the 221 “older mem- ; bers” of Ben Harrison Camp, No. 356. “If you are eligible, sign on the dotted line,” is the next injunction, and the sons of veterans are signing in large numbers. Many grandsons of Union soldiers, descendents on the mother's side, i from Grand Army grandsires, did not know until recently that the son of a | daughter of a Union veteran was eligible ! to the Sons of Veterans just as well as the son of a son of a Union fighting man. A survey has indicated that in Indianapolis from thirty to forty thousand citizens are eligible to the Sons of Veterans. They are being catalogued rapidly, and are being interviewed by th* workers of Ben Harrison Cainp as quickly as they are listed. Ben Harrison Camp is driving for 1.000 new members by July 30. Campaign Manager Frank C. Huston, in charge of the headquarters booth at Pennsylvania and Market streets, reports that progress thus far Is encouraging beyond the most sanguine advance predictions.
