PROBLEMS OF LABOR BEFORE A. F. L. HEADS Irish Question Prospective Issue of Forty-first Annual Session. RAIL MEN HAVE PROGRAM DENVER, Col., June 12.—Th* fortrfirst annual convention of the Americath Federation of Labor opened here today with the opposition planning to rebnka the leadership of Samuel Gomperg. Tho*a who charge that he does not support America a Interference In th* Irish controversy and is out of nympathj- with the Irish cause, were boast-; ing that the veteran labor head “will be made to bow to the Sinn Fein.” The railroad unions, which charge he has done little to put Into effect the declaration of last year’s convention on Government ownership and Democratic control of the railroads, plan to bind him to definite action. f IRISH QUESTION / PROMINENT. Irish sympathizers of all factions are lining up with demands that the convention "go to the limit” on the Irish question. Many of them go so far as to declare Eamonn de Valera, president of the Iri6h Republic, will dictate the Irish policies of America’s great labor body. According to reports, Harry Boland, De Valera's secretary, who is still in this country, has sent resolutions to be presented to the Irish sympathizers when they meet to draft their program for the convention. The resolutions, It Is said, were placed In the hands of Peter J. Brady of N*w York with definite instructions to act. Brady is a member of the city government of New York. He denies that hs will present resolutions drafted by any one but himself and declares be has Instructions from no one on the subject He is known as a Compere supporter. He confirms claims of the anti-Gompers faction that Gompers will “go along with” the convention's actions on the Irish question, however, extreme it may be and instructions will be given to th# executive council that will make it Impossible for that body to evade the Issue. MAY PRESENT TWO SETS OF RESOLUTIONS. Although all Irish factions claim there will i>e harmonious action, there are predictions that two sets of resolutions will be presented to the convention, T. 11, Yind, president of the labor body of South Chicago, 111., and secretary of the labor bueau of the American commission on Irish independence Is here as a personal representative cf Frank P. Walsh. He declared today that Gompers will bo compelled to “go the limit” on the Irish question along with the ecu-' ventlon. Letters In answer to a circular ent out by the labor bureau of the American com-i mission for Irish independence to put, labor leaders on record on the Irish question, were made public today. "You ask for a personal statement on the Irish situation,” says Gompera, in his answer. “A personal statement from me would not be as effective as the declaration made by the convention! of the American Federation of Labor regarding the Irish question. “Permit me to add that I am a member of the American committee for relief In Ireland. Its functions are to raise funds for the needy people of that country.” William I>. Mahon and Daniel J. Tobin, members of the executive council of th* "federation, and John L. Lewis, head ot ! the United Mine Workers of America,' ’’o has been boomed to succeed Gom-i rs, are among the leaders who un-, „uulifledly declare their support fo* recognition of the Irish republic. Lewis’ silence on report* of hi* candidacy continue. Caueuses to be held this week will determine whether there will be any opposition to Gompers In th* election.

P. - Oplinger, temporary chairman, that labor, would "fight to a finish” the open shop ca mpaign. “In our battle with the enemieg of: labor, we will echo tho word* of a fa-1 mous French general, ‘They shall not i pass,’ ” Oplinger announced.
