TELLS OF PART WOMEN HAVE IN FIRE FIGHTING Lela B. Chesline of State Marshal’s Office Aids in City Campaign Roman's vital Interest In the campaign to prevent fires In Indianapolis, being waged by the Citizens Fire Prevention Campaign In cooperation with the city government and dozens of civic organizations, is discussed by Lela B. Chesline, assistant State fire marshal in a statement issued today. Mrs. Chesline has been loaned by the State fire marshal to the city fire prevention bureau and Is assisting in activities at the bureau at fire headquarters. New York and Alabama streets. Mrs. Chesline said: “It is estimated that the present loss of human life by Are in this country is from 10,000 to 15,000 persons a year “But when one knows the existing conditions throughout, we wonder that the loss of life is not even greater. Criminal seems a mild word when we speak of the carelessness of some cases, with which we have come in contact. “Eighty-two per cent of the loss of life are mothers and children under school age, and over 60 per cent of the fires occur in dwellings. The fire hazards of the home have been seriously augmented by the introduction of new labor saving devices without proper advice as to their proper use and the attendant haards. “If your house burns down it will be through bad luck, but if your neighbors house burns down, you can figure In ninety-nine cases out of 100 that carelessness, ignorance or apathy are the causes. "There are over 25.000,000 people in the United States living in temporary quarters. If 5.000.000 homes are built this week, it would not be sufficient to care for the people, yet we are burning SOS homes every working day. Shall we not attempt to curb this dreadful leakage of life and "property. "The women are charged with being responsible for the majority of the preventable fires, so let us each do our full duty now, toward earning the credit for reducing this loss, by cooperating with the people of Indianapolis who. having the best interest of the city at heart, ere working to make this the cleanest and safest place in which to live. "Mrs. George M. Henderson will have charge of the speakers bureau that will be placed before the public soon when many valuable talks wIU be heard on this most interesting subject, ‘Fire Prevention.’ "There have been a number of fields of usefulness opened to women in the last few years and she hss proved her worth In every instance. Some objection has been made to women's activity in public affairs, oa the ground that her sphere ehouid be confined to her home. How little these objectors realize that a true wcman has no other thought than to make conditons such that her home, her sphere, will be a harbor in all that the w>rd Implies, for her loved onet “We have heard it said very often that

‘an ounce of prevention ts worth a pound of cure,’ and It was never more true than in the case of fire: for the most important step in fighting fire is in preventing it. “The conservation of life and property from fire works to everybody’s advantage and does not interfere with the rights of any. With the reduction 'of fires, comes the lowering of insurance rates, so that practically every property owner will benefit from a successful move of this kind. • “Fire prevention societies may flood the city with propaganda warning against the stupendous fire loss, but unless we, as indivduals, recognize the personal responsibility of cooperation, much of our efforts will be wasted. So let us each help make Indianapolis fireproof by making every day ‘Fire Prevention day.’ " GOETHALS LEAVES CUBA. HAVANA, Cuba, Juno 10.—MaJ. Gen. W. Goethals, retired, who has passed a week In the interior of Cuba, left for ,Ncw York yesterday after expressing his willingness, It is reported, to take general charge of Government's project for a system of national highways One condition of acceptance, It is added, is that the roads shall be concrete. HARD TIMES. AKRON, Ohio, June 10—Joseph Sourek, attorney, ate his iinner from a tin plate in the jail because he did not have $25 to pay a contempt of court fine The fine was assessed by Judge H. C. HOW IRON STARVATION OF THE BLOOD RUINS ft WOMAN’S HEALTH—AND MAY MAKE HER WRINKLED. AGED AND CAREWORN. GIVING HER FACE A PALE. HAGGARD. SICKLY APPEARANCE

For want of iron you may practically be an old woman at from 30 to 35. weak, downhearted and "all fagged out.” You may be in such a highly nervous Irritable state that you "go all to pieces’’ on the slightest provocation, while at 50 or 60 with good health and plenty of iron In your blood, you may still be. young In feeling and so attractive and full of life as to defy detection of your real age. It’s not always the youngest woman that is most sought after—there Is an Indescribably alluripg fascination in the rosy cheek, the Inviting lips and sparkling eyes of a blood filled with Iron. You may be afflicted with iron starvation of the bloon and not know it, Just as thou-' sands of other women are. It is said that about one person in three in America today suffers more or less from malnutrition—lack of nourishment, which is caused not by lack ot food, but In many cases, by lack of sufficient Iron In the blood to enable y.-u to get the strength and nourishment out of your food. Indoor life, over-eating ar.d modern methods of cookery are sapping the Iron from the blood of hundreds of thousands of women. Our forefathers, to whom history refers as a natloc of red blooded Americana, ate the husks of grains and the skins and peels of vegetables and

PLANS TO SAVE BLOCK STREETS Experiment Will Be Tried in Central Avenue. A method for the preservation of wood block streets, miles of which have been permitted by the city administration to get into a deplorable state for lack of proper care, has been worked out by City Engineer Frank C. Llngenfelter and approved by the board of public works. It will be tried out in Central avenue betwee'n Thirty-fourth and Thirty-eighth streets sometime this month or next. Mr. Llngenfelter's recommendation Is 1 that all blocks out of line with the street level, broken or chipped be taken out and either relaid or new blocks put In so as to make a smooth surface. This surface then will be scraped with steel brooms and refined tar applied evenly over the surface the tar to be heated to from 175 to 185 degrees at the time ot application. The top then will be covered with granite chips of from No. 10 to No. 4 screen size, the distribution being from to twenty-four pounds to the Square yard. Packing ol' this layer with a light roller completes the repair. Wood block streets have been going to pieces In Indianapolis because no method

other coarse foods rich in strength giving organic iron, which the modern woman does not get. To make up for the great loss of Iron caused by the life woman is compelled to lead she should eat more such Ironcontaining vegetables and fruits as spinach and baked apples and take organic iron like Nuxated Iron from time to time to help enrich her blood and revitalize her wornout, exhausted nerves. ‘Nuxated Iron represents orgsnlo Iron in such a highly condensed lorm that one dose of it Is estimated to be approximately equivalent (in organic Iron content) to eating half a quart of spinach. one quart of green vegetables or half a dozen apples. It’s like taking extract of beef Instead of eating pounds of meat. Over 4,000.000 people annually are using Nuxated Iron. It will not Injure the teeth nor disturb the stomach. If often increases the bodily and mental vigor; strength and endurance of weak, nervous, "run-down” folks In two weeks' time. Your money will be refunded by the manufacturers ts you do not obtain satisfactory results. ' Beware of substitutes. Nuxated Iron comes In tablets only—never in liquid form. Always look for the word "Nuxated” on every package and the lette.s N. I. on every tablet. Sold by all druggists.—Advertisement.
