What’s the WORST thing in the world? UNCERTAINTY! It’s WORSE than lower wages. WAGES might be low—but if you were in any doubt about GETTING even the low wages—THAT would be worse than the fact that your wages WERE low. Not knowing WHAT to DEPEND on is the WORST thing in the world. It brings worry, fear, dissatisfaction, unrest and UNHAPPINESS.
The Fruit of War And that is what we have HAD —a period of UNCERTAINTY. We were uncertain IN the war —and we have been UNCERTAIN in the period FOLLOWING the war. That is, we could not TELL with any CERTAINTY what tomorrow might BE—how if would AFFECT our living and our NESSWe were uncertain because there was no STABILITY beneath our life from day to day. Conditions which govern our lives were unsettled, uncertain and therefore UNSTABLE. And isn’t STABILITY the real foundation of SECURITY and HAPPINESS? Study a minute and SEE! What Is Stability? Stability means “something that may be counted as FIXED and DEFlNlTE—something we can DEPEND on.” It doesn’t make any DIFFERENCE whether it’s PRICES—or something ELSE. There was no STABILITY in the WAR. A French peasant went home in the evening •—and there WAS no home! It had VANISHED in the storm of UNSTABLE conditions—conditions he could not DEPEND upon.
Stability is the Basis of Happiness and Prosperity v • • < CopTTtKfct, 1931, SJdener A V&nßipw.

You figure that your wife, and family will be WAITING for you when you go home TONIGHT. If you couldn’t depend on THAT—where would HAPPINESS be? And that’s STABILITY. It Applies to Prices The fundamental virtue of STABILITY applies with EQUAL force in ANY direction. It applies to PRICES. It applies to wages—for wages is the PRICE of labor. Prices that were out of all proper relationship to one another —prices that were forced upward by the stem emergency of war—were not founded on NORMAL conditions at ALL. There was no STEADY, continuing SUPPORT beneath them. They were sent UPWARD and supported TEMPORARILY by the stress of a world EMERGENCY. Each day brought a NEW and HIGHER price. We did not KNOW from one day to another what we would pay for clothes or food. We didn’t KNOW how far our wages would go TOMORROW. There could be no PLANNING—no looking to the future with CERTAINTYThere was a mad rush for MORE MONEY •—higher WAGES —to keep up with the soaring prices of what we had to BUY.
How Your Prosperity Is Being Assured—No. 7
Curing the Evil A bad, unsafe and unhealthy CONDITION* we ALL admit A condition to be endured in EMERGENCY* Just as other undesirable conditions must be suffered when emergency DEMANDS. BUT—a condition to be REMEDIED as QUICKLY as POSSIBLE! And it IS being remedied. PRICES are being RESTORED to a level in keeping with the development and progress of living. Prices are being readjusted to a sound and normal RELATIONSHIP with one another. The buying power of a dollar is not being LESSENI!D—but STABILITY IS being established. And with it we gain the HAPPINESS which comes in KNOWING definitely from day to day where we STAND—of knowing how to plan with CERTAINTY for TOMORROW. Knowing what our money will BUY the next day. And Still Buy as Much With ALL prices READJUSTED to a sound, though lower, LEVEL, we can still BUY as much with a dollar as we could before prices were twisted out of all RELATIONSHIP in the storm of war. We can still BUY as much. We merely will not HANDLE as much money. Will that hurt ANYONE? Does anyone want the OLD conditions to con* tinue?
