YOST ADVISES FEEDING OF BEES Issues Letter Covering Points Suggested by Reports From Over State. Suggestions for feeding, transferring of bees from boxes and cross-comb hives to movable frames, and the precaution necessary against a spread of foulbrood diseases are made in the monthly letter sent today by C. O. Tost, spiary iaspector for the State Department of Conservation, in SOO members of the State Beekeepers' Association. Reports from inspectors and beekeepers over the State show considerable Joss of brood and bees in some localities. Tost says. The southern half of the State suffered most during the early spring, largely due to starvation. The spiary inspector calls attention that even if the day Is warm and bright and bees are flying well it does not signify they are gathering nectar. The hive may be without stores and it is the duty of the beekeepers to investigate and replenish depleted stores with a sugar syrup. White clover is beginning to bloom in Central Indiana which indicates a rather abnormal early flow. In order to profit by this beekeepers should have their apiaries in shape to receive the harvest. tainly unprofitable. Extra supers and hives should be immediately available and in readiness when the bees start ! gathering the main honey flow. .. Mr. Tost points out that the most j -favorable season for transferring bees from boxes and cross comb hives to movable frames is here. beekeeper opportunity to observe and determine whether or not foulbrood Is present when he must act to eradicate it before serious damage results. Colonies found slightly effected will give best results If not treated until just at the beginning of the main honey flow, but colonies that are weak and failing should be treated at once rather than allowed to become the prey of strong colonies disposed to rob them of stores and resulting in spreading the disease. All weak colonies should have the hive entrance closed to a small opening to prevent the possibility of robber bees entering, the State inspector says. 600,000 PERCH FRY PLANTED State Makes Record in Fish Growing. More than six hundred thousand yellow perch fry were planted In seven lakes In three counties during May by the fish and game commission of the State department of conservation. According to George N. Mannfeld, division chief, it is the first time since the £tate started fish culture In 1911 that anything like this number of this species was ever planted In Indiana. These perch were artificially propagated at Tri-Lakes State hatchery and many thousands of others will be reared to the flngeriing stage for distribution later on upon application. May plants were distributed as follows: In Fulton County, South Mud lake, 80,000; Lake Manitou, 200,000; Lake 120.000. In Kosciusko County, Center lake, 80,000; Lake Water, 40,000; Goose lake, 80.000. In Noble County, 32,000 were placed in Sylvan lake. Fish culturlsts look upon the yellow perch as embodying all the fine points desired. It Is iufflciently game to provide rare sport for the ordinary angler, and Us edible qualities are unexcelled. In fact, many experts consider it the best pan fish found In Inland waters.
