GIGNILLIAT TO ENTERTAIN 500 LEGIONAIRES State Commander Invites Post Officers to Visit Him at Culver. Col. L. R. Girnllllst, State commander of the American Legion, has issued an Invitation to the commander and adjutant of every legion post in Indiana i attend a two-day conference at Culver Military Academy as his guests, L. Bussell Kewgent, State adjutant, announced today. The date of the conference has not been definitely fixed but it probably will be he'd on Saturday and Sunday, June 11 and 12. At least 500 legion officials are expected to attend. Culver Military Academy will be without students upon these two dates, since they fall in a vacation period, and it is the plan of Colonel Gignilliat to house his guests in tents on the academy grounds. The entire place will be thrown open to the legionalrea. This means that the academy boat bouses, swimming piers, athletic fields and other features will be at the disposal of the veterans. Between entertainment features the post officers Will find time to exchange Ideas aad discuss current legion affairs With their commander. Membership of the legion in Indiana has gained 10.000 since last year at this time, Mr. Kewgent reported. The present total Is around 27,000. The Ft. Wayne Post, No. 47, holds ths honor with a subscription of $471.43. The quota was only 10 cents per member, which, with the post membership of 70fi, wonld have made its share only S7O. The Ft. Wayne post Is the largest in the State. Delaware Post No. 19 of Muncle, the second largest post with a membership of 504, made the second highest contribution in the State, with $70.72. The State department as a whole has exceeded its quota in the grave decoration fund drive, more than SI,SOO having been turned over to national headquarters. The quota was $1,734.41, based on last year’s membership. BANDIT SLAYERS GET LIFE TERMS Four Convicted of Murdering Culver Merchant. Special to The Times. WARSAW, Ind., May 20.—Four men were to start serving sentences of life imprisonment today for the murder of Russell Saine, hardware merchant of Culver, who was shot to death as he tried to prevent a hold-up o fthe Culver State Bank. The jury returned a verdict of guilty against the men late last night and pronounced their sentences. It is understood their lives were spared after ten of the Jurora had voted repeatedly for the death penalty. They were convicted of the crime on the first ballot, but the Jury was locked up four hours trying to decide on the penalty. The bandits are Peter Fox. J. R. Barns and Arthur Silbert all of Chicago, and Joseph Byers of Knox, Ind.
Drouth Reveals Warning of Tears GENEVA, May 20.—A severe drought is prevailing in Switzerland and the Rhone and Rhine rivers have dwindled to balf their normal Rise. At Genthond the Stone bottom of the lake has appeared, revealing this inscription, dated 18C2: “When you see me again the world will be in tears.” In Lake Thun a similar Inscription has been revealed.
