DAYLIGHT BILL DEFEATED BY CITY COUNCIL Only Two Favor Turning Clock Back One Hour During Summer. GRADE CROSSINGS UP Daylight aarlng fsi defeated when the city connell roted 7 to 2 agalnat the adoption of the ordinance setting the clock back one hoar from May 22 until the lat Sunday In September, at the regular meeting last night. Counellmea Jacob P. Brown, author of the ordinance, and Dr. Sumner A. Furniss roted for It Some spirited maneuvering came about ■when an ordinance directing the Btg Pour Railroad to establish safety gates at Olney street, Avondale Place and Sherman Drive was called out of the public works committee by Councilman Brown. Councilman Jesse E. Miller moved that the ordinance be made a special order of business for the next regular meeting. Mr. Brown, as chairman of the committee objected, stating that a condition aangerons to school children existed at the three crossings and that action was necessary at once. Councilman Miller replied that the condition hag existed for a number of years and be could not see that waiting two weeks longer would make it worse. When the question was put Councilmen PurnlFg, Dr. Otto B. Pettijohn, Miller, G. G. Schmidt and President Russell Willson voted to maka the ordinance a special order of businesa for the next meeting and Couneilmen Brown, Louis W. earned x, Lee J. Kirsch and William B Peake voted “no." It Is understood that Connellman Miller did not favor action upon the ordinance night because there are a number of other grade crossings In Brlghtwood which should be safeguarded. A meeting of the public works committee wi'-h all other members of the council was called for Thursday afternoon for the purpose of viewing the crossings in need of protection by Mr. Brown. An ordinance appropriating $4,970.93 to the board of public wo-ks with which to pay a judgment render?,' *o August M. Xuhn, assignee of the cor ractor for the i’leasant Ena lntercepter "wer.
