MACHINE LOSES AWFULLY HARD Leaders Work in Vain for Withdrawal of Demand on Lemaux. Diggrentled News -Jowett Republican machine leaders are attempting to get precinct committeemen to sign a paper opposing the resignation of Irving W. Lemaux from the Republican city chairmanship, It has been discovered Mr. Lemaux's resignation has been requested by Samuel Lewis Shank, Republican nominee for mayor. Indications were that the move was not meeting with much success, the committeeman in general deeming it wise to line up with Mr. Shank because he is the regularly elected nominee for mayor. It also was becoming apparent that the disgruntled faction was geiung nowhere with a movement launched several days ago to get the Republican candidates for city judge, city clerk and city councilmen to join in the request that Mr. Shank withdraw his demand for Mr. Lemaux's r>gnation. Several of the councilmanic <4?hdidates have flatly stated that they will pnrsue a “hands-ofC" policy, believing that any attempt to injure the chances for election of Mr. Shank would endanger the success of the whole ticket.

U. S. COMES TO AID OF GUARDSMEN Government to Repair Uniforms and Equipment. Hereafter the United States Government | will clean and repair the uniforms and I equipment of the National Guard, through arrangements made with the Chief of the Militia Bureau by the Salvage Branch of the Quartermaster Corps, according to word received by Indiana guard officers,. In each case the salvage repair shops at the station nearest to the National Guard organization concerned will be utilized. Maj. Gen. H. L. Rogers the quartermaster general of the Army, has given the various corps area quartermasters supervision of this work and distribution of the National Guard property requiring repair. Quartermaster corps officers expect a large saving to the National Guard, as well as economy in the preser- j vatlon of clothing and equipment, to be brought about by this radical innova- ; tlon. It is also proposed to furnish laundry ; service to all students at the coming summer camps for the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. At stations where the new Government laundries are available, this service will be rendered free for all clothing issued by the Army, and at a nominal charge for personal effects of the young men who nave signed np i for military training tlrts year. In further line with the general policy ; cf rigid economy laid down by Congress, the Quartermaster Corps has eliminated j purchase of clothing for j IB Army, aqd will hereafter alter sizes ; Bf garments bought for war-time use, j and still on hand. This will save the taxpayers several hundred thousand dollars annually, especially for under- i clothing and flannel shirts, which can ' be economically altered by the salvage i repair shop, recently made part of the j machinery of the Quartermaster Corps. :
