Narcotic Officer Gets Maximum of Excitement former Member of Police Force Here Active in Detroifs War on Dope Trade.

Back a generation ago when good little boys wished to be bad and felt a craving for that vague thing known as action, they invariably started west to become cowboys and kill redskins. A little later the tide turned and boys craving a bucket or two of blood started east to become New York gunmen, probably in the near future we will hear of youngsters running away to become Federal narcotic officers, for at present the life of one of Uncle Sam's dope sleuths seems to be about as full of excitement as even the most imaginative kind could desire. Take, for example, the recent adventures of Guy A. Braughton, who has earned for himself around Detroit, one of the two largest centers of the illicit narcotic trade in the country, the title of the •'lndiana Clean-Up Man.” formerly was a member of '{he Indianapolis police force, and was one of the best-known mounted men in the city, until he went into the United States narcotic service about two years ago. Forty-three arrests, the capture of thousands of dollars' worth of morphine and other narcotics, and a leading part In a red-hot revolver battle in a small room in which eight pieces of ‘'hardware” were spitting lead in all directions, are among the incidents that have occurred in the last two months to keep life from becoming too monotonous for him. GUN FIGHT THRILLER. Braughton has been home on a few days' leave during the last week, but has now returned to Detroit to take up his work again. The revolver battle which occurred two weeks ago was a thriller that filled the Detroit newspapers with big headlines, resulted in the capture of SIO,OOO worth of morphine, the arrest of three persons and the Wounding of a negro policeman of Detroit under circumstances that have been the. cause of an investigation now being conducted by the police authorities to see if he is a member of one of the largest narcotic gangs operating in that part of the country. The whole battle and the capture of the morphine was the result of accidental circumstances that led to greater results than the narcotic officers had hoped when they started out. For a long time Federal authorities In Detroit have been trying to obtain evidence on “Six” Collins, a negro, who has been dealing in narcotics. A stool pigeon was sent to the home of Collins to make a purchase of SIOO worth of morphine which was to be paid for with marked money. Joseph Diederich, chief of narcotic officers at Detroit, and Braughton waited outside until the ‘•stool” should give a prearranged signal, when they were to rush in and make the arrests. • After waiting about five minutes tba Detroit atmesphere suddenly was shat-

tcred with a burst of drum fire that must have taken any former doughboys in the neighborhood back to the days when they stood in the trench lines of northern' France and watched the barrage pass over their heads. Thinking that Collins and his gang had “made” the stool Braughton and Diederich pulled out their guns, burst through the door and found themselves in the midst of as neat a little piece of gun play as the most realistic motion picture producer could desire. On one side of the room were three negroes blazing away at three white men who were working their way toward a door, answering the fire shot for shot. In the middle of the room stood a suit case. The “stool” was nowhere to be seen, but It was too good a scrap to be out of, so Braughton and Diederich added their artillely reinforcements to the whites. One big negro turned hts gun on Braughton, but Braughton bent him to it, fired twice, the first shot taking effect in the negro's right arm and his revolver clattered to the floor. This

was enough for him and he broke for a door, only to be brought down by the "Indiana clean-up man’s” second shotwhtch took him In the calf of the leg. By this time two of the three whites had escaped the three negroes and the remaining white man had been rounded up and the stool pigeon emerged from under a blanket In a far corner of the room where he had taken refuge following the ostrich school of thought that if he could not see he could not be seen. ROOM IS SHOT CP. More than fifty shots had been fired, but so bad was the marksmanship that, although everything In the room was shot to pieces except the persons taking part in the fight, the only bullets that hit their mark were the two fired by Braughton. When affairs had returned to a state of normalcy the suitcase was investigated and morphine to the value of $lO,000 was found in It. Then the real story came out. This morphine was being delivered to S. Collins and his gang by the three white men, two Italian brothers named Nano and a man named Edward Gray. It Is now believed that Collins and his crew decided that it would be a very neat little stunt to eat their cake and have it by the simple expedient of what is known in underworld parlance as "nigh Jacking” the dope sellers; that jis buying the morphine, paying for it : and then holding up the sellers. In ac- | cordance with this plan it is charged that Joe Harris, a negro policeman, was

in on the play and entered the room before the transaction was completed. The Nano brothers and Gray saw through the game and the gun play started. Harris, the negro policeman, was the one w’ho displayed the miserable Judgment of trying to outshoot Braughton and he is now in a Detroit hospital recovering from two wounds and meantime b.is part in the affair is being investigated, for he denies that he was one of Collins’ gang, although his explanations as to Just how he got in the scrap are not satisfactory to the authorities. The Nano brothers escaped and are believed to be hiding In Canada, but the SIO,OOO worth of morphine Is in the hands of Uncle Sam. TAKES PART IN OTHER RAIDS. While this was the most exciting of Braughton’s adventures during the last tw’o months, It was only a small part of the work he accomplished. Four days after he arrived in Detroit he seized a dope peddler with SIO,OOO worth of herein, a few days later he took part In a raid on Detroit's Chinatown that netted three opium layouts, complete with pipes and several hundred “toy cans,” as small GROVE’S IS THE ONLY GENUINE Laxative BROMO QUININE tablets. quantities of opium prepared for the Individual dope fiend are called; two and one-half pounds of opium and seven Chinamen. An enjoyable time was had by all before the raids were completed. About a year ago Braughton first sprung Into prominence In narcotic work by breaking up the famous WoodbridgeBaumer ring of morphine dispensers In Detroit. This ring had evaded arrest for a long time and had dispensed thousands of dollars’ worth of morphine in this country. When Braughton's work was finished thirty-seven arrests had been made and later every one of the thirtyseven were sentenced In Federal Court to terms ranging from four months to four years and fines running as high as $5,000. Detroit is one of the greatest dope centers In the United States, probably being second only to New York City In this unenviable distinction. Its proximity to Canada makes It comparatively easy for dope dispensers to bring narcotics into the city and it is distributed from there. Lately Mexico has attained an unsavory reputation In this respect and is now pushing Canada hard for the doubtful honor of supplying dope to the United States. As might be expected where the risk is great the profits from this illicit narcotic trade are high. Morphine, for example, sells for $75 to SIOO an ounce in large quantities and this is retailed out

to the dope fiend In small quantities at the rate of not less than SIOO an ounce. NOT A PLANET. The North Star Is not a planet.
