PRISONERS TELL OF ROBBERIES "Witnesses at Rushville Trial Recite Operations. Knclal to The Times. lad., April B.—Operations of a clever gang- of thieves was JHvulged by the testimony of Jesse and Boa* Demaree, convicts from the State prison, who were brought here to testify in the case of the State against Gregg Alyea, Greensburg, who is on trial here charged with conspiracy. Jeese Demaree related experiences of different robberies of residences, stores and freight cars. He told about sealing a barrel of whisky from a railroad car. and cf stealing rugs, shoes raincoats and dress goods from cars as they passed through Greensburg. In each caso, the State attempted to prove that Alyea was in some manner connected with the disposal of the loot. Demaree said that Alyea disposed of thirty or forty quarts of whisky and litbat he made suits, overcoats, silk shirts ""and other things from materials taken as loot. VJfhe two convicts on cross-examination ■Bated that there was no alliance formed JSrith Alyea, and that he purchased the jgoods from ,them because he could get them cheaper. Demaree said he sold the - whisky to Alyea for $2 a quart and bolts of silk for $lO. s> Clara Demaree, who recently pleaded .jgullcy on the Joint affidavit on which jAlyea is being tried, and who was given „a suspended sentence, also testified for -the State, and told of the close rela--stionship existing between Alyea and the 'members of the gang. She stated that -she saw him wear clothes made of goods “which had been stolen by her husband. 5 Silverware, stolen two years ago from 3he residence of Emuiert Stevenson, west Hos. Greensburg, was identified by Mrs. Jesse Demaree admitted robbing the house. Amanda Martin told the ijnrj that she bought the silverware from “Demaree, and was cautioned by Alyea f at the time Os the arrest, to bury it on -her uncle's farm, south of Greensburg. Miss Martin said that Alyea took much Interest in' the disposal of the silver--ware. She said she didn't follow his dl--reetions but took the silverware to Elmwood, Ind.. for keeping, but later handed it over to the officials. Other places entered by Demaree, to “ which he alluded, were the residence of *Dr. D. H. Dean in this city, the Miijnear •store at Greensburg. and the Moore and Sharer hardware store in Carthage. Hooch Search Warrant Phony;* 2 Go Free * Eebe'-ca Olar. 26. proprietress of the * grocery at 1201 Norjyko avenue, and Aurel Seuftu, 27, living at the same address. where ha is a clerk were freed of charges of operating a blind tiger by Judge Walter ITitchard in city court yes--’terday afternoon. Taylor Groniger, counsel for the deftfense. held that the affidavit and the search warrant used by Sergeant Cliff ' Richter and Patrolman Patterson on April 4 to search the home of Mias Olar for evidence of any violation of the prohibition laws.-was invalid. He said that a valid search warrant is one that has l been filed in the city clerk’s office where an affidavit must be kept charging the defendant or person having In his or her possession illicit liquor, and not one that has been prepared by the officer and presented to> the judge before an affidavit has beeji filed. . The officers say they found fonr quarts of grape wine and saw Scuttn pinr liquid out of a pitcher which smelled of “white mule” whisky. ‘Ransacks’ Case of Dime, Hearty Meal Six suits of clothes and seven pairs of trousers were stolen from' Isadora . Feigelbaum's dry goods store, 615 East * Washington street, last night.
