Tilford went to police headquarters yesterday aft->r two days’ search for him had been conducted by police and Federal officers. Police, In a raid on his home, March 15. found a fifteen-gallon still, twenty gallons of corn mush and about one quart of "white mule.” Shelbyville Cops Say Grudge Theft Motive to The Times. SHELBYVILLE. Ind., March 18.—The authorities were today Investigating petty thefts which were committed during the night at three groceries where windows were broken. Only small losses were reported. The police believe the places were visited by men or boys in an automobile and that the three places were selected on account of grudges held against the owners. MARTIXDALE FUNERAL SUNDAY. Renters Tossed Out of Beds in Blow-up NEW YORK, March 18. —Twenty-four families were badly shak-n up and hundreds of Columbia and Barnard students were aroused today when a boiler exploded In the Hillcrest apartment house at 430 West 110th street. Dr. Titus Bull, his wife, daughter and nephew occupying an apartment immediately above the boiler room, were hurled from their beds. The explosion partly wrecked the floor of their apartment. The negro fireman In tie boiler room was badly burned and was removed to a hospital. GOOD FRUIT CROP INDICATED. COLUMBUS, Ind., March IS.—Bartholomew County fruit growers report all kiuds of fruit in good condition and state that If favorable weather continues a bumper crop will be produced. TAKE NEW TACK TO CLOSE ROAD Richmond Officials to Block National Highway. Special to The Times. RICHMOND, Ind., March 18.—Immediate steps to close the National road here will be taken by the board of works and the city attorney despite opposition by Miss Esther Griffin White, who has sought to enjoin the board from closing the highway because of Us historical Interest. Action by the board was stopped when Miss White applied for an injunction to prevent the carrying out of an order to permit the dumping of earth in the roadway. The board did not fight her action, admitting It had taken the wrong step. The new course of the board will be to have the city engineer prepare specifications calling for the raising of the grade along his seclon of the road. Miss White maintains that she will combat any move to eliminate the thoroughfare and old bridge. Sells-Floto Circus Will Be Here May 5 The first circus to bo booked for Indianapolis is the Sells-Floto circus, which will come May 5. A representative of the circus has been here, making arrangements for the use of the new show grounds at West Washington street and Belmont avenue. The circus will open Its season Saturday, April 9, at the Coliseum In Chicago. WILL DISCUSS LABOR NEEDS Leslie’s Editor to Appear Before Metal Trades Men. “The Real Labor Problem” will be the subject of an address by I)r. Charles Aubrey Eaton, editor of Leslie’s Weekly and manager of the industrial relations department of National Lamp Works of the General Electric Company, at the fifteenth annual dinner and meeting of the Indianapolis branch, National Metal Trades Association, Thursday evening, March 31. at 6:30 o’clock in the Riley room of the Cluypool Hotel. Dr. Eaton was head of the national service section of the United States Shipping Board, Emergency Fleet Corporation. and was charged with the responsibility of speeding up production during the war in all the shipyards and In thousands of industrial plants contributing materials for ships. It is said that in one year he personally addressed more than a million workmen.. After the armistice Dr. Eaton spent geverul months studying Industrial conditions in Europe. 3 Escape From Jail at Bloomfieldßetaken Special to The Times. BLOOMFIELD, Ind., March 18.—Three prisoners escaped from the Green County Jail here last night and two of them are still at large. The delivery was made by prying a bar from the Jail window and the prisoners lowered themselves to the ground with a blanket. The bar had been sawed half In two. All the prisoners were from Linton. Lee Ixinger, 18, who was charged with petit larceny, was caught by Sheriff Greeley Wines shortly after the delivery. The two still free are William Hopkins. 20, and Herman Longer, 19, both charged with vehicle taking. It is believed they were headed toward Indianapolis, where a sister of Hopkins lives.
